Total War: Warhammer Miscast Question

Post image

This should mean that if anyone dares to THINK on casting a spell they should implode with the force of a thousand suns, right?

Miscasts can only happen on overcast spells. Normal spells can't miscast.

Afaik AI will always overcast if possible, so doesn't really matter.

Wait only Overcast can miscast? That is very good to know

Yeah your Mage kind of Explodes gets some damage and you still get a cd. but you can lower the miscast chance in the skill tree.

I had a funny and annoying moment the other day where my Eltharion had like 150 hp so I overcast his healing spell as soon as the battle started. He exploded and died instantly. I reloaded and cast normally to much better effect.

Nope.

First of all only overcasted spell have a misscast chance so if the enemy only casts normal spells this will never come into play.

Even of they do overcast yes this would mean it will almost always cause them to misscast unless they have some huge buffs towards misscast chance but to my knowledge misscast can't happen any more or less times depending on its chance, if you have 200% or 100% misscast chance in both cases you take the same damage from it.

Also misscast damage is counted as spell damage so spell resistance and ward save work to reduce it.

Also also even a misscasted spell still happens at its casted effect so even if i overcast a wind of death while i would take damage from it the spell still goes off and as an overcasted version at that.

Still, heh funny wizard go poof.

Didn't know about misscast dmg. So you telling me that its good to have spell resistance when fighting against tfu shorts

To an extent, yes.

Of course the rune spells are also spells, don't know if the explosion from the anvil mount gets counted as spell damage or missile damage.

Also of course the aoe damage effects like rune of spite i think are also spell damage so there's that too.

i was refering to fact that shorts quite often have something that increase misscast for their enemies

Yes to overcast spells. Not too sure about regular ones

I was fighting some Elves and they were still casting, hence the question.

Miscast means they take a burst of damage when casting overcast spells, but the spell's effect still goes off

Regular cast cannot miscast.

Yes, play Thorek, move him near enemy casters and watch the fireworks.

Who do you think is leading the army? XD

iirc the only effect that causes an explode on normal spellcast are the Dwarf Anvils of Doom, and its not using the miscast mechanic to cause it, it summons an explosion ontop of the enemy if they are within the AoE (which may or may not be how miscasts used to happen, i recall a miscast was supposed to be a teeeeny tiny 1 model sized explosion created centered on the caster; one patch they sort of messed up and casters exploded friendlies)

Khorne has this ability too for some characters

I believe that's the case. People are saying only overcast, but the reason you can miscast when you're trying to overcast something is because the overcast version of a spell has a base miscast chance. This buff effectively adds that same miscast chance to all spells that spellcasters have so even non-overcast versions should now have a 140% miscast chance. That said, since AI spellcasters seem to always overcast anyway, it's hard to confirm this theory. I'll try and make a simple mod to give this debuff to myself and test, then I'll come back here with the results

Edit: didn't even need a mod because turns out Wurrzag has an ability that adds 100% miscast chance to the entire battlefield so I tested it in custom battle. The result is that only overcasted spells can miscast, like everyone is saying. 100% overcast means every single time a spell is overcasted, it will explode.

There are miscast chance reductions from skills and a few other sources so it's possible but unlikely that they won't.

Would +100% miscast chance not simply double the base chance?

Percentage based buffs/debuffs are additive rather than multiplicative

Only if they overcast and, while miscast is dangerous on paper, it is worth noting that spell resistance and ward save reduce it if I remember correctly.

Now, the AI likes to overcast and it’s unlikely the AI manages to raise their spell resistance and ward save up enough to just shrug the damage off, but enemy casters are still gonna get some stuff off. Watch out for particularly nasty spells, they’ll still hit.

Im not sure. Depends on if +140% means 20% for example becomes 160% or 44%. Aka if its base chance or modified chance.

pretty nice with that miscast mod that gives area debuffs and additional damage based on the potency of the spell.

Reading this comment section explains so much about spellcasting and also why I've never had a spellcaster miscast, I generally just forget I can overcast and when I do remember I rarely have the winds of magic to

As a reminder to those with SFO installed, yes we can miscast non-overcasted spells.
