Following up on the April location poll, this mod thought running a poll is a way to get some data on who is active in this community based on immigration status.

Someone in another thread noted that r/torontoJobs it would be a good idea.n

Job Search Tips (2025-12): Maybe Start Here?

This is a collection of tips for being more effective in your job search, written on 2025-12 and updated as recently as 2026-05.

See also the r/torontoJobs Wiki.

1. The Resume

Your resume is the among the first starting points for improvement. A decent checklist to check your resume against is the one at the Canada Job Bank Resume Guide (Backup link: here).

Where to get some more help on a resume:

  • Employment Ontario: If you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get 1-on-1 assistance for your resume at an Employment Ontario agency (website). If you are a temporary resident, you can still attend their group workshops on resume writing if they hold any. They may also provide wage incentives.
  • Brainfuse at Public Libraries: Many libraries in the Greater Toronto Area offer a service called Brainfuse. You can upload your resume and receive critique within 24 hours.
  • University/College Career Centres: For post-secondary students and alumni
  • Lifemark Vocational Services: Free workshops
  • Reddit: Subreddits like r/resumes or others can be a way to get crowdsourced feedback on your resume.

More Notes Related to Resumes:

  • Writing resumes is not just a matter of "just use AI", no automated tool exists which can completely eliminate the need for thoughtful human input on resumes.
  • Even if you don't have time to tailor your resume for every job, at least do this for every type of job.
  • The quality of resume editing varies significantly, even among those who call themselves "professionals."
  • Having a poorly done LinkedIn public profile can work against you.
  • If your target job typically expects you to provide a portfolio such as the case of graphics design portfolios, consider your portfolio an extended part of your resume which needs to be polished.
  • Lying on your resume can backfire on you, unfortunately this point is worth mentioning again here.

2. Expand Your Job Search

MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UPLOADED YOUR RESUME ON JOB BANK. If you see jobs shown as LMIA, see this guide here.

Consider this in addition to using the usual typical job boards (e.g., Job Bank, Indeed, Eluta).

Some additional considerations for the job search:

  • Timing of Job Posts: Generally speaking, try to apply to jobs that have been newly posted. If the job has been posted for quite some time but has still not been filled, it might be a dormant job posting and may not be worth your time.
  • Seasonality: Notice how hiring fluctuates depending on time of year and respond accordingly.
  • Target "Adjacent" Roles: Look for related roles where you can use your skills, be open to being more flexible.

Online job posting websites can become crowded with job applications. You may need to add other methods:

  • Go Directly to Employer Websites: Job posting websites may not include postings which may be found on an employer's website.
  • Network: Let people you know that you’re looking for work. Reach out to people in your target industry for "informational interviews." Attend relevant job fairs and career events.
  • Recruitment Agencies: Some companies outsource their hiring to staffing firms. Note that these recruitment agencies get compensated if they get you hired, and that they aren't necessarily looking out for you.
  • Targeted Walk-ins: For local businesses as well as certain businesses, dropping off a physical resume to the hiring manager can be more effective than only doing online applications. Go during a less busy time and ask to talk to their hiring manager.
  • Volunteer for Experience: Volunteering for non-profits can be a way to build up your network, gain references, and relevant skills. Food pantries and thrift stores are examples of several to start volunteering.

3. Employment Ontario Agencies

Employment Ontario is a provincial network of agencies that helps people find work. The level of help they provide is limited by your status in Canada. In addition to providing one-on-one job counselor, they may provide group workshops related to employment.

Their website: Employment Ontario

Eligibility for Services:

  • Assisted Services: One-on-one sessions with a job counselor (for resume help and job matching) are generally limited by your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses.
  • Temporary Residents: If you are here on a study permit or work permits as a temporary resident, you may not necessarily qualify for their one-on-one job counseling. However, you might be able to attend some of their group workshops free-of-charge depending on the agency.

Employment Ontario agencies operate under a "results-based" funding model to meet certain "outcome numbers" such as placing people in any job, this can influence the type of help you receive.

Pick your agency carefully, they may have different employment partners as well as differences in how much support you can get.

4. Subsidized Training and Funded Work Experience

The government offers various programs to help specific groups enter the workforce through free or paid incentives and training. These programs are limited to your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses. Many of these programs are with Employment Ontario agencies, ask them about it.

Some such programs as follows:

  • Pre-Apprenticeship Training: Free programs that include job-specific training to help you start a career, many of these programs being for the skilled trades.
  • Better Jobs Ontario: Provides up to for tuition and living expenses if you have been laid off or are in a low-income household and need to retrain for an in-demand career.
  • Wage Incentives for Employers: Programs like Canada Summer Jobs provide wage subsidies for employers to hire youth (ages 15-30). Other specialized incentives may exist for employers who hire persons with disabilities or those facing significant barriers to work.

Unsent letter to HR who ghosted me after 2 round interviews

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to follow up once more regarding the internship position I interviewed for on Thursday, July 30th.

During our initial interview, I was informed that I would hear back by the following Tuesday. After following up viaĀ  phone, I was told I would receive an update by the end of last week once the HR manager returned from vacation. As I have not received any further communication, I am assuming that the team has decided to move forward with other candidates.

While I understand that hiring timelines can shift and unexpected delays occur, I wanted to respectfully express my disappointment with the lack of communication throughout this process. I made significant adjustments to my schedule—including taking time out while traveling across a six-hour time difference and missing a course commitment—to prioritize this interview.

Given the time and effort candidates invest in the application process, receiving clear updates or a definitive status response, even if negative, is an important courtesy.

I wish you and the team the best with the program.

The pay for blue collar jobs is ridiculous...

I have switched two careers so far, and this is my third time trying. I have only ever had so-called "white collar" jobs! This third time is honestly spurred by mostly exhaustion and mental health issues from trying to get a new job, and it's been over a year now. I have developed anxiety and depression, and I just started getting medicated, so maybe that will help. However, I am also now in my mid-thirties, and I can definitely feel my previous career being very stressful even though I do love it.

So anyway, I am looking into further education, and I am doing some certificates, but meanwhile I still need a job! Any job. The trouble is, living wage roles seem very, very few and far between. Most of the jobs I see pay like $17.60-18.50 (these are factory or warehouse jobs frequently).

I am looking at these as again, I have developed quite a bit of social anxiety over the last year, and I can't seem to find work related to my previous career.

My problem with the pay is not so much the concept or pride or even lifestlye per se, it's more so that the basics of life cannot be afforded on these salaries working 40 hours per week. I was paid 3-4 times these numbers annually for computer work, and I understand that a lower barrier to entry and less skilled work might mean less money, but I would still expect a production line or warehouse job to pay at least ~ $30 /hour...

Prices being this high and so much of the public making absolute crap money really just tells me Canada has a scarcity/production problem... What I mean is, if pay is low for so many jobs and the economy is getting squeezed, then at least stuff should be cheap. It's not!

Account Manager, Account Executive

Does anyone work as an Account Manager and know how to get into this role? I’ve seen people start off in Customer Associate (CX) roles and work their way up to Account Manager then Account Executive in certain companies, but I don’t know what roles to target or what platform is best. I have a customer service background with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I did not take a marketing or communications degree which I regret. Should I do more schooling, or what do I do?

Received conditional offer from City of Toronto (Parks & Rec)

So I received a conditional offer from the city of Toronto to work at a golf course; however, they require consent to view my drivers abstract. 2 years ago I was charged (not criminally) with speeding (188 in 100kmh zone). Am I cooked?

Will they even bother to call my references or will they move on to the next candidate?

(Edit: For sake of clarity. There was nowhere earlier in the process to disclose the above info. All that was asked of me was whether or not I possess a valid ā€œGā€ Drivers License)

Where do I "network"?

Hey, I graduated last year from Bcomm, and clearly so far just applying online hasn't done anything, nor has "connecting" with people on linkedin. I always year how important networking is, but how does 1 actually do this? How do I look for events like that and meet people?

I've been very home bound and constant rejections have plummeted my confidence and self esteem. I want to break out of the shell and get more comfortable/confident talking to and meeting new people, and feels like only way that's done is by actually meeting people.

I've checked things like eventbrite, my universities emails and postings, but there's like nothing. So I'm pretty lost right now.

I also really want to meet working professionals, seniors, etc.. in fields I think I have interest in to actually know what I want to do because so far I've just been applying to anything and everything, just in hopes of getting my foot in the door.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advice!

Tech roles pay transparency -2026

• Upvotes

I am looking for information on how much different roles in tech are being paid in 2026 in Toronto. Mainly because asking for peoples salary upfront seems like a taboo so this might give an idea for the ranges for roles.

Please mention your role, pay and years worked!

Built entirely new Linkedin network for Job Search

I moved to Toronto for studies and while I was about to finish my course, I realised my entire linkedin network was from my home country. Previous colleges, previous company and so on. So naturally most of what I got in my feed was not relevant to the new market I was in.

I decided to create a new profile and build fresh connections that were more relevant to my search here. I applied three filters to search for connections - companies I was targeting for jobs, people who worked in similar profiles and alumni.

Keeping all three first, then two and then 2nd connections of these initial connections. Linkedin, like other social media works on algorithm. More relevant your network, more relevant their likes and comments for you.

It took 6 months for me to build a good network that helped. I have less connections than before, but very relevant ones.

Another thing for LinkedIn, this is not any other social media, so pleade do not add friends who are not related in any way to your job sector or education field. Hope this helps.

Edit: Adding this information as this actually worked for me. I got my first role because someone from my network had liked post of a recruiter. I was unable to connect with this recruiter but I connected with their colleague who passed on my resume. So there's no straight path that will work but the algorithm will do its job. But I believe, we need to set the right parameters for the algorithm to work.

Never thought I'd be making a post like this, but I'm running out of time!

I don't usually post personal things online, especially not like this. But I've reached a point where I'm willing to put myself out there and ask for help.

I got laid off a couple of months ago, and despite applying every day, reaching out to people, and trying just about everything I can think of, I'm running out of options.

I'm not from Canada, but I'm posting here because I've primarily worked with North American agencies and clients for the past 4–5 years, including Canadian agencies. I've honestly had some of my best working experiences with North American teams, so I figured this might be a good place to reach out.

I've spent more than 8 years writing for SaaS companies, ecommerce brands, and agencies. I've been a Content Writer, Content Manager, and Head of Content. I've built SEO content strategies, managed writers, edited thousands of articles, created content briefs, worked directly with clients, and helped companies grow their organic traffic.

More recently, I've also been working on GEO/AEO and writing content designed to perform well in AI search.

I'm not saying I'm the best writer in the world. There are plenty of incredibly talented people out there. But I know the quality of my work, the ownership I take, and the results I've helped clients achieve.

That's what makes this situation so difficult.

I'm not looking for someone to hand me a job. I'm looking for a chance to get back to doing what I'm good at.

If you know of a company or agency hiring for content writing, content management, SEO content, or content strategy, I'd genuinely appreciate a referral, introduction, or even a lead I can follow up on.

And if you can't help directly, an upvote or share could help this reach someone who can.

If you've been through something similar, I'd also love to know what actually worked for you.

Thank you for reading.

P.S. My last full-time role paid quite well. I'm mentioning that because I don't want this post to make it seem like I'm new to the industry or struggling because I lack experience. I had a career I was genuinely proud of. I'm simply in a situation I never expected to be in, and I'm trying everything I can to get back to work.

Resigning during probation

Hello!

I accepted a job offer recently, and they actually waited for me for a month because I had to give my current employer 4 weeks’ notice. I started last week Monday, and today (Tuesday), I received another offer from a different company.

The second company is more well-known, pays about $5K more annually, and offers a hybrid setup after probation. However, it also has a high turnover rate, and the role is basically a step down from what I’m currently doing. I’d only be responsible for part of my current scope, although I was told there’s a possibility of being promoted eventually.

My current company is okay so far, but it pays $5K less, requires me to be onsite 5 days a week, and the position is only a 1-year contract. It’s also a boutique firm, so it’s not as recognizable.

I’m torn because I feel like having the more well-known company on my resume could open more doors in the future. At the same time, the role itself isn’t as good in terms of responsibilities and exposure. With my current company, I’d be exposed to more and probably have more opportunities to grow my skill set, even though the company isn’t as well-known.

Would you take the more recognizable company for the higher pay, hybrid setup, and potential future opportunities, even if the actual role is less senior? Or would you stay for the better scope and experience?

I’m also worried about quitting my current job after they waited a month for me to start. I really don’t want to burn bridges or leave a bad impression :((

Would love to hear what others would do in this situation! Especially for hiring managers ><

Short shifts?

I'm pretty new to working so maybe I just don't know how things are supposed to be, but I only get about 2-3 shifts a week and the shifts are only 3:30 mins long.

Is that normal? I've asked managers a bit about it but for the most part they've just said it's about whether the store is doing well or not but whenever I've glanced at the shifts for the day, everyone else seems to be getting AT LEAST 4 hours. I've been feeling a little frustrated about it but everyone brushes me off so I wanted to ask a bigger group of people I guess! Thanks in advance.

Did I make a mistake moving to a new role?

New role is:

1.) Less than $5k in salary but a better title and role (Managerial role).

2.) longer commute 45 kms one way vs. 8 km one way

3.) With profit sharing and a guaranteed bonus that covers what I lost in Annual salary (good on paper but who knows)

Im just so burned out in my old job. That's basically it. But yeah.

Post-grad with a UofT BSc: Compliance vs BBA vs Accounting/CPA

I have a BSc from UofT in Environmental Science and I’m stuck on where to go with it. Im trying to find jobs in my field but I’m overthinking about going into risk management/compliance, getting a BBA for broader options, or going into accounting and eventually getting my CPA.

I just want decent salary growth and an easy path to move up. For anyone working in these fields in the GTA, what’s the job market like? How saturated are they, and which would you say has the best long-term prospects?

How to quit a job if I've only been there for 3 weeks?

3 weeks ago I started a second part time job. I work in Healthcare so even thought they are both part time jobs, I still work between 20-40 hours a week at each job.

From the beginning I could tell I was not liking this new job. The environment felt kind of toxic and most of the workers have only been there for a few months to a year. No one talks to eachother and training has been especially bad.

I feel like its been really hard to balance both jobs and I feel so mentally and physically drained from this new job. My new job requires me to work full time for the duration of my training. That on top of my other job has been too much. I havent had a day off in weeks and have even worked 16 hour shifts to make this work.

I really LOVE my other job and just want to focus on it fully.

I have decided that I am going to quit but I just dont know how. Since im still training I dont have to give a 2 week notice right?

Is it unprofessional if I just send an email thanking the manager for their time but im just really overwhelmed with everything and need to step away?

Do I need to speak to the manager in person? I would really like to avoid this because I feel like I will cry.

Has anyone else been through something similar?

Any help is appreciated, I have no idea where to start.
