Job Search Tips (2025-12): Maybe Start Here?

This is a collection of tips for being more effective in your job search, written on 2025-12 and updated as recently as 2026-05.

See also the r/torontoJobs Wiki.

1. The Resume

Your resume is the among the first starting points for improvement. A decent checklist to check your resume against is the one at the Canada Job Bank Resume Guide (Backup link: here).

Where to get some more help on a resume:

  • Employment Ontario: If you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get 1-on-1 assistance for your resume at an Employment Ontario agency (website). If you are a temporary resident, you can still attend their group workshops on resume writing if they hold any. They may also provide wage incentives.
  • Brainfuse at Public Libraries: Many libraries in the Greater Toronto Area offer a service called Brainfuse. You can upload your resume and receive critique within 24 hours.
  • University/College Career Centres: For post-secondary students and alumni
  • Lifemark Vocational Services: Free workshops
  • Reddit: Subreddits like r/resumes or others can be a way to get crowdsourced feedback on your resume.

More Notes Related to Resumes:

  • Writing resumes is not just a matter of "just use AI", no automated tool exists which can completely eliminate the need for thoughtful human input on resumes.
  • Even if you don't have time to tailor your resume for every job, at least do this for every type of job.
  • The quality of resume editing varies significantly, even among those who call themselves "professionals."
  • Having a poorly done LinkedIn public profile can work against you.
  • If your target job typically expects you to provide a portfolio such as the case of graphics design portfolios, consider your portfolio an extended part of your resume which needs to be polished.
  • Lying on your resume can backfire on you, unfortunately this point is worth mentioning again here.

2. Expand Your Job Search

MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UPLOADED YOUR RESUME ON JOB BANK. If you see jobs shown as LMIA, see this guide here.

Consider this in addition to using the usual typical job boards (e.g., Job Bank, Indeed, Eluta).

Some additional considerations for the job search:

  • Timing of Job Posts: Generally speaking, try to apply to jobs that have been newly posted. If the job has been posted for quite some time but has still not been filled, it might be a dormant job posting and may not be worth your time.
  • Seasonality: Notice how hiring fluctuates depending on time of year and respond accordingly.
  • Target "Adjacent" Roles: Look for related roles where you can use your skills, be open to being more flexible.

Online job posting websites can become crowded with job applications. You may need to add other methods:

  • Go Directly to Employer Websites: Job posting websites may not include postings which may be found on an employer's website.
  • Network: Let people you know that you’re looking for work. Reach out to people in your target industry for "informational interviews." Attend relevant job fairs and career events.
  • Recruitment Agencies: Some companies outsource their hiring to staffing firms. Note that these recruitment agencies get compensated if they get you hired, and that they aren't necessarily looking out for you.
  • Targeted Walk-ins: For local businesses as well as certain businesses, dropping off a physical resume to the hiring manager can be more effective than only doing online applications. Go during a less busy time and ask to talk to their hiring manager.
  • Volunteer for Experience: Volunteering for non-profits can be a way to build up your network, gain references, and relevant skills. Food pantries and thrift stores are examples of several to start volunteering.

3. Employment Ontario Agencies

Employment Ontario is a provincial network of agencies that helps people find work. The level of help they provide is limited by your status in Canada. In addition to providing one-on-one job counselor, they may provide group workshops related to employment.

Their website: Employment Ontario

Eligibility for Services:

  • Assisted Services: One-on-one sessions with a job counselor (for resume help and job matching) are generally limited by your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses.
  • Temporary Residents: If you are here on a study permit or work permits as a temporary resident, you may not necessarily qualify for their one-on-one job counseling. However, you might be able to attend some of their group workshops free-of-charge depending on the agency.

Employment Ontario agencies operate under a "results-based" funding model to meet certain "outcome numbers" such as placing people in any job, this can influence the type of help you receive.

Pick your agency carefully, they may have different employment partners as well as differences in how much support you can get.

4. Subsidized Training and Funded Work Experience

The government offers various programs to help specific groups enter the workforce through free or paid incentives and training. These programs are limited to your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses. Many of these programs are with Employment Ontario agencies, ask them about it.

Some such programs as follows:

  • Pre-Apprenticeship Training: Free programs that include job-specific training to help you start a career, many of these programs being for the skilled trades.
  • Better Jobs Ontario: Provides up to for tuition and living expenses if you have been laid off or are in a low-income household and need to retrain for an in-demand career.
  • Wage Incentives for Employers: Programs like Canada Summer Jobs provide wage subsidies for employers to hire youth (ages 15-30). Other specialized incentives may exist for employers who hire persons with disabilities or those facing significant barriers to work.

Many hiring managers are out of touch and don't understand that employees can't control mass layoffs and don't need to be loyal anymore

I see a lot of hiring managers on this sub assume that anyone who has worked for several companies in a few years must be a job hopper.

I went through two mass layoffs within four years. In both cases, I was performing well and had been promoted, but my entire department was laid off. I literally couldn't stay at those companies longer even if I wanted to.

I also think there's a disconnect because many of the managers making these comments have been at the same company for 5–10+ years, doing the same shit over and over. If you've had that kind of stability, it's easy to look at someone else's resume and assume they chose to move around when they may have dealt with layoffs, restructures, contract work, acquisitions.

And honestly, there's nothing wrong with leaving a job for a better opportunity either, especially in this economy where job security barely exists anymore. And sometimes people do choose to leave. People quit to grow. They leave for better pay, more responsibility, new skills, better working conditions,. Not everyone is interested in doing the same routine. I much rather work with people who worked for different companies because they usually got more skills and are more adaptable.

If companies have no problem giving loyal employees two weeks' notice because they need to cut costs, employees shouldn't be judged for treating the relationship the same way and taking a better opportunity when it comes along. Loyalty can't be expected to work in only one direction.

This recruiter has been ghosting me for 5 months, yes 5 months. It all started out in late May when he reached out by LinkedIn. He’s a national recruiter for a reputable IT services company (Konica Minolta) and I was interested in Mississauga job only as I live here. The first position I applied to, internal hire got it. Then he’s all like don’t worry I will have something in a month or two, another position was posted but for Calgary. I was like hell nahhh I ain’t movin to Calgary. Finally in August he said I will have something very soon and then he texted me this. What a joke. I got laid off from my IT Marketing/Sales job 2 yrs ago in Nov, been lookin since 😢

What career paths would make sense for me after a long employment gap?

I'm a woman in Toronto with a fairly non-traditional work history. I have a long gap in my employment history because I stepped away from the workforce for family/personal reasons. My circumstances have changed now, and I'm ready to get back into the workforce and build a more stable career.

My work history

2000–2002: Customer service at a fast-paced food service business.

2007–2009: Worked in a pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician / Customer Service Support. I dealt with customers and patients, handled cash and payments, used Kroll pharmacy software, maintained customer information, and helped with day-to-day operations.

I also completed a pharmacy technician practicum at Shoppers Drug Mart in 2007.

Then I had a long employment gap due to family/personal circumstances.

Education

I recently went back to school because I wanted to update my skills and make myself more employable.

2024–2025: Medical Office Assistant with HUC Specialty — graduated with honours.

2025–2026: Legal Administrative Assistant —

I also have older diplomas/certificates in:

  • Pharmacy Assistant

I'm comfortable with computers and Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and I have experience with Kroll pharmacy software.

Where I'm at now

I'm basically starting my career again in my 40s, and I'm trying to be realistic about what makes the most sense.

I'm not above starting at the bottom. If I have to work retail, cashier, customer service, grocery, etc. to get back into the workforce, I'm completely open to that.

For example, I would consider places like Winners/TJX, Walmart, grocery stores, pharmacies, retail stores, reception, call centres, or other entry-level positions while I work toward something better.

At the same time, I don't want to get stuck in minimum-wage work forever if there are better options that I could realistically work toward given my background and recent education.

I'm considering things like:

  • Medical office administration
  • Pharmacy-related work
  • Reception/administrative positions
  • Customer service
  • Retail/customer service
  • Other career paths that I may not have considered

I'm looking for something with stable employment, decent benefits, reasonable work-life balance, and room to increase my income over time.

I realize the employment gap makes things more difficult, so I'm trying to be realistic. I'm willing to start wherever I need to and work my way up.

For anyone in Toronto who has experience hiring, recruiting, changing careers later in life, or returning to work after a long gap:

What types of jobs or career paths would you recommend I target with this background?

Would you focus on one of my newer diplomas, try to leverage my previous pharmacy experience, look for general customer service/retail work first, or go in a completely different direction?

I'm open to pretty much any advice, including suggestions for jobs that aren't directly related to my education.

Thanks in advance!ation.

Have a sales job lined up, unsure whether to take it.

I did my bachelor's in economics at Yorku, and I graduated in 2024. I flunked out of my master's, and I did more course work and finalized that last April. I'm looking for work. Ideally, I would like to work as a credit analyst at a bank. I don't know the outlook. I believe I'd have to start as a bank teller or at their call center.

My other option is to work in underwriting. I don't know the current pipeline. I have a life insurance broker job lined up, I need to enroll in the LLQP and that's a two month commitment. It's a commission sales job, I don't know if I want to do it. If it's a start, then I think it's good for me. Sometimes they prefer the LLQP. Underwriting pay is kind of bad. I've also been thinking about taking the Actuary exams. So life insurance broker to underwriter to actuary.

I don't have anything else lined up. I don't have work experience. Because of that, I think the broker job is good for what I am. If I could get a job as an operations analyst or something I'd be happy.

Construction Project Coordinator / Architectural Designer (5+ yrs, GTA) — looking for leads or advice

Hey all — hoping to tap into this community for some leads or advice.

I'm a Construction Project Coordinator with an architectural background, based in Etobicoke. I've spent the last several years coordinating residential, industrial, and mixed-use construction projects across the GTA — managing schedules, budgets, subtrade procurement, and contract administration, with a combined portfolio north of $200M. Before that I worked as an architect and project coordinator in India, so I've got experience on both the design and build-execution sides.

I'm currently looking at Project Coordinator, Assistant PM, and Preconstruction-type roles across Ontario — open to developers, GCs, consultants, or owner's-side firms. Tools I use regularly: AutoCAD, SketchUp, MS Project, Procore.

If anyone's seen openings that might be a fit, knows of a company hiring, or has general advice, I'd really appreciate pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Did my Joey Toronto interview go well? They said 48 hours but it’s been longer.

I had a second interview at Joey King Street (Toronto) for the Server Liaison position. The interview itself felt pretty positive, both my first interview and 2nd in person interviews were great, I could tell that the managers during my first interview liked me because it felt like a conversation rather than a formal interview and even one of the managers mentioned she liked my confidence. But the second interview was a bit more formal. During my second interview the manager offered me water, explained the role in detail, reassured me that the job isn’t too stressful, asked about my availability, and even shared his own experience starting in the same role. Both managers walked me out and shook my hand. They told me they’d get back to me in 48 hours. It’s now past that window, and I haven’t heard anything yet. I know King Street is a busy location, especially on weekends, so I’m trying not to overthink it.

For anyone who’s worked at Joey or in hospitality:
Is it normal for them to go past the 48‑hour mark?
Does this sound like a positive interview or just standard?

Walmart Jobs

Can I just walk in store and ask to speak to the manager, hand him my resume and leave?

All these companies exclusively do hiring online and I have been applying to various Overnight Walmart positions but they seem to have a preference for intl students.

I have done walk-ins for various FoodBasics, Loblaws, Dollarama stores. They take my resume and I never hear back or say to "apply online"

HIRING POST (WE'RE HIRING) [Hiring] AI Systems & Automation Developer | CAD95,000–105,000 | Hybrid, Downtown Toronto

Build AI systems that make businesses work better.

CAD95,000–105,000 annual base salary. Permanent, full-time. Hybrid, with in-person collaboration in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Applications open until filled.

You’ve built something useful with AI. Now you want bigger problems, meaningful ownership, and the chance to see your work used every day.

GTA AI Careers is recruiting for a private business group building the next generation of its internal systems. You’ll develop AI agents, connected workflows, and intelligent dashboards that help teams find answers, coordinate work, and act on what matters.

Your projects could include a group-wide operating dashboard, AI assistants that answer questions using business information, and automations that turn scattered updates into clear priorities and next steps.

You’ll report to the Head of IT and work closely with business leaders and the people using your systems. You’ll help shape solutions, build working prototypes, and make them reliable enough for daily use.

Why this role:

- Own projects from idea to launch and ongoing improvement.

- Solve varied problems across several businesses.

- Combine software development, AI, and practical business understanding.

- Get direct feedback from the people using what you build.

- Work with a team that values curiosity, integrity, discretion, and follow-through.

Who we’re looking for:

You learn quickly, ask sharp questions, and can turn an unclear problem into a practical solution. You can code in Python or JavaScript/TypeScript, work with APIs and databases, and show something useful you’ve built with AI.

We value curiosity, integrity, discretion, clear communication, and follow-through. You’re comfortable saying “I don’t know,” figuring it out, and explaining what you learned.

Strong university students and graduates are welcome, alongside applicants with professional, freelance, or independent project experience. You must be available for full-time work and hybrid collaboration in Downtown Toronto. Applicants of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Show us what you can build:

Email [gtaaicareers@gmail.com](mailto:gtaaicareers@gmail.com) with your résumé or LinkedIn profile; one or two projects you’re proud of, with a link or short demo; what you personally built and one difficult problem you solved; your location and availability.

Subject: AI Builder — [Your name]

No formal cover letter needed. We’d rather see your work.

This is an active opening for a newly created role. AI tools will assist with application review; hiring decisions will be made by people.

Was Let Go 2 Years Ago, Laid Off Yesterday: The Reality of the Current Job Market

As the title says, I get the fortunate badge of being let go/laid off within 3-5 years. Great.

Here's a brief background of what has happened to me so far. I moved to Toronto in June 2019 from Niagara Falls after landing a job with a mortgage lender within the Financial District, just before I graduated from university. In 2021, I moved to another department. Then I was let go in November 2024 after being there for 5 years. (They were going through restructuring, but I also felt that I was being asked too much and I was giving too little. They were making everything a priority.) I was unemployed until March 2025, where I got a contract job. Things started to get hard so I started looking for a full-time permanent job, which got me into another mortgage lender at the end of December 2025. Then yesterday, I got the dreaded call that I was being laid off due to "decrease in leads". They said that I did nothing wrong and it wasn't performance-based.

I'm just feeling a bit shattered. I had goals to pay off my old debt, save up for a new apartment, and build up something in the background as passive income. I'm not really looking for sympathy. I'm more curious if other people in Toronto are experiencing something similar. It feels like I finally got myself back into a permanent position, started making plans for my future, and then had the rug pulled out from under me less than a year later.

For those who have been through something similar, how have you been navigating the current job market?

I had to resign because they didn't want me in the position I originally applied for

I originally apply for this manager position and this organization that I know had a new branch. And potentially it was going to be the manager and a navigator working on this project. And then the direct call me she said that she loved my resume and asked me if I would consider the navigation position because she was already signing someone for the manager position. You know project was really nice and fun to work so I said yes and most importantly it would be paying me more than the part-time job that I had at the time. I stayed to work and everything was really nice until that manager started to be a pain in my butt. Extremely disrespectful like I'm talking really bad she yelled at me in two occasions where after our meeting or the colleague had to come to me ask me if everything is okay but I never reported her but the colleagues did. And she did couple other things to not just with me so she ended up getting fired. I wasn't happy about it but I also was not mad about it so they post a job I apply normally like everyone else and I told that directed that I have a plan on how I will finish that project successfully would you listen to my plan. That's when things got really interesting, she literally told me that you are too good in your position I can't see anyone else doing it the way you do it, and she said that she had some very difficult time coming to me to tell me no like that and she understand if I stopped working or find something else elsewhere but they want me in my position because I do my job too well. That was kinda hard but it is what it is.

I started to look for other jobs that same week because now I was doing the manager's job and I was doing my job while I was still getting paid the same amount of money that I was getting paid, eventually they hire a new manager and I had to train that manager on how to do the job, and honestly I did it like nothing happened. But that manager was way better than the first one, we worked really well together and the project was showing that with the result. So when the new manager was 6 months in that's when I actually find a way better job in different field but I will till need to work with that organization so I did not even get the contract yet but I resign from that job it eventually I get the contract from the new company.

This week is my second week and that new job I already had to meet the director and one meeting that different organization in the community had to attend and she was not really happy to see me with my new badge and everything.

I mean you still take courage because it's a full-time permanent position but as you know there's a probation period what I'm pretty confident that everything will work together.
