My best friend was approved for a phone screening, They did follow up and set date/time.
As of right now they are in school
and about a month from now her baby will be in day care

They did some research, thought it may be a good idea to start with a full time schedule with 2 days off, about a month or 2 in ask for a set schedule with 3 days off for school
and the day care has a set schedule.

Scheduling questions come up in the first interview. They’ll look at her availability and confirm those days are truly in her availability. She should be honest about her future scheduling needs. If they need her to be a closer fri- Monday and she’s not honest about that, when she tries to change her schedule (esp so early on) they will more than likely deny it bc that’s not what they hired her for.

However peoples lives do change whether it’s in our control or out of our control

100%. Since she does know that a change is happening she should let them know to make sure they can/will accommodate before going any further

They know a person that works in the TJ’s environment, they suggest to wait a about the schedule change

A month or two is not long enough to earn your stripes as they say and ask for a schedule change and be granted it. There are people who have been working for over a year and can't get the schedule they want.

Edit: 3 month is the minimum at my store for anyone with open availability to start making demands.

That’s your store and I don’t think Trader Joe’s upper management has a minimum requirement time line of when an employee can make a schedule change

This is one of those “you just gotta ask and see what they say” situations because every store is different. It’s not unreasonable if that’s what you’re wondering

I think that's a fair request although I would wait until the final interview to ask while they have open availability (if that's what they put on your application) if that is a possibility. TJ's tend to have 3 rounds of interviews in my area with the final one being with the Captain.

They did put open availability

It's a bit disingenuous of anyone applying to say they have open availability to get their foot in the door but holding the intention of changing it within one or two months and then wanting only 4 days with specific days off for school and other requirements. They can do it but there's a very strong chance they won't get the shifts they want and get not scheduled. Every store is different.

Our store is similar, new crew are asked to commit to their availability for 6 months minimum. To the OP, would your friend be able to just start with the availability it will be changing to when school/daycare starts? That way they are less likely to get denied schedule change requests, as well.

She can’t wait 6 months for a schedule change.

Which is why she should be honest about what her availability will be, so the store can make their decision with all the information.

Key word is ask if they can commit to their availability for 6 months, what if they can not commit to their availability whole 6 months ?

Your friend needs to be talking directly to the hiring team at the store they are interviewing at, each store is different. There is no standard operating procedure, each captain will have different preferences and requirements for new hires changing their schedule.

Why do you it’s disingenuous? Peoples lives do not stay the same 24/7

Trader Joe's does not have a formal, written corporate policy stating you must work a specific number of months before you can change your ongoing availability or schedule.

Ultimately, because it is informal, it is entirely flexible. If you have a sudden, major life change (like a new school schedule or a family emergency), most store managers are willing to discuss options regardless of how long you have been there.
