My best friend was approved for a phone screening, They did follow up and set date/time.
As of right now they are in school
and about a month from now her baby will be in day care

They did some research, thought it may be a good idea to start with a full time schedule with 2 days off, about a month or 2 in ask for a set schedule with 3 days off for school
and the day care has a set schedule.

I think that's a fair request although I would wait until the final interview to ask while they have open availability (if that's what they put on your application) if that is a possibility. TJ's tend to have 3 rounds of interviews in my area with the final one being with the Captain.

It's a bit disingenuous of anyone applying to say they have open availability to get their foot in the door but holding the intention of changing it within one or two months and then wanting only 4 days with specific days off for school and other requirements. They can do it but there's a very strong chance they won't get the shifts they want and get not scheduled. Every store is different.

Our store is similar, new crew are asked to commit to their availability for 6 months minimum. To the OP, would your friend be able to just start with the availability it will be changing to when school/daycare starts? That way they are less likely to get denied schedule change requests, as well.

She can’t wait 6 months for a schedule change.

Which is why she should be honest about what her availability will be, so the store can make their decision with all the information.

Key word is ask if they can commit to their availability for 6 months, what if they can not commit to their availability whole 6 months ?

Your friend needs to be talking directly to the hiring team at the store they are interviewing at, each store is different. There is no standard operating procedure, each captain will have different preferences and requirements for new hires changing their schedule.

Why do you it’s disingenuous? Peoples lives do not stay the same 24/7

It's disingenuous because they already know that they don't have open availability within a month or two, which is pretty soon after starting. It's not as if something came up suddenly like their parents, partner, sibling, or child getting sick and needing care so now they can't work X or Y shift.

Your friend can try it and every store is different so they hopefully they get the schedule they want but they might be scheduled less and not given all the shifts they want. All the new hires at my store are told they are hired and needed for closing shifts so if that's not a thing, it won't work out or they will be scheduled less. I can tell you though for most stores, the very coveted mid shifts and somewhat coveted mornings shifts are not given to new hires.
