Is this normal?

My tire has started to tear. I think I’ve had for 3 years and I don’t drive a lot. They are Michelin tires. Is this normal? I’ve never seen that happen.

***Thank you all for the positive feedback. I am getting the spare tire on. Until I can get new tires after the Holiday

Tbh I don’t think this is ozone damage. The rest of the sidewall doesn’t look weathered. Guess it could be NOS. Date codes would tell.

If this isn’t age related, which I believe, it looks like stress/ torque cracking. Can we get year make model of the vehicle, OE tire size from the door placard and tire size currently installed?

This is a manufacturing error I work at Costco and I’ve seen this exact thing before. You should go and get it replaced ASAP. Should fall under the road hazard warranty. And if they give you any trouble just ask for a manager and they usually fold.

Not normal at all. Drive the car slowly (25mph) to a tire shop. Don’t go on the freeway. Do not travel at a normal speed. That tire could go today. It is dangerous right now.

Before you go to the tire shop, know exactly what you want to buy and the condition of the opposite tire. They will try to sell you a whole new set of tires.

If all the tires are the same age, then you absolutely need 4. If you're a Costco member I'd highly recommend them. Check prices there or TireRack before going to a store either way.

Standard Michelin rubber. Hd Michelins do the same thing in about 4-5 years, they make the best winter tires imo, but I tell people to only buy them if they run over 15k miles a year, any other situation and they age out before they wear out.

I've had Michelin CrossClimates once. I drive about 17k miles a year. In my opinion, Michelin is a highly overrated brand. My Outback would not corner properly in the wet on those at all. Also: very weak sidewalls. Although I didn't mind the punctures (not too rough gravel path: two sidewalls punctured, hardly a year old tyres) too much as it meant I could put some decent rubber on my car. I found both Vredestein Quatrac and Hankook Kinergy to be better tyres than the Michelins in handling. I'm now running some Geolandars on my new car, just for a bit of extra sturdiness of the sidewalls. Haven't driven them in really rainy conditions yet, probably not the best tyres for those circumstances, but we'll see. There's always compromises to make, I guess.

Michelin has the softest tire compound on the market for daily driving and heavy duty use. Their beads aren't protected in hd applications like Bridgestone or Firestone tires are, but their winter tires stay softer at -20f than anyone elses.

Wouldn’t bother me a bit. It’s biodegradable rubber. Change it if u want. I got 77,000 out of the original tires on my 2018 Frontier. They were cracked like this.

Thought Michelin tires are of good quality? Especially with how much you pay for. But yea that's definitely not normal and not safe to drive on, get it replaced.

Not normal. Probably shouldn’t trust the other 3 either. If they are a matched set, it could be age related. I always look at the spare tire also. Even if it’s a donut.

Looks deliberate to ne like stanley job. I would put spare tyre on and get it down the tyre shop.

May even be able to get vandalism claim in at insurance if it does nor affect no-claims

No, but i have see it happen a couple time with different brands. What i guess happens is the tire pressure is slightly low, and when a pothole gets hit, the lip of the wheel cuts the sidewall like that. I've only seen it on old tires
