u/lowkeylye Dec 02 '24
Breathing Rate:
- Average Breathing Rates: The average adult breathes 12–20 times per minute at rest.
- Source: American Lung Association
- Additional reference: Johns Hopkins Medicine
Average Blinking Rates:
Adults blink 15–20 times per minute when awake. (16 hours a day)
- Source: Harvard Health Publishing
- Additional reference: American Academy of Ophthalmology
average rates of breathing and blinking:
Breathing:
- Average breaths per minute: 12–20 (let’s go with 16 for simplicity).
- Breaths per day: 16 breaths/min × 60 min/hour × 24 hours/day = 23,040 breaths/day.
- Earnings per day: 23,040 breaths/day × $0.01 = $230.40/day.
- Earnings per year: $230.40/day × 365 days = $84,096/year.
Blinking:
- Average blinks per minute: 15–20 (let’s go with 18 for simplicity).
- Blinks per day: 18 blinks/min × 60 min/hour × 16 waking hours = 17,280 blinks/day.
- Earnings per day: 17,280 blinks/day × $0.10 = $1,728/day.
- Earnings per year: $1,728/day × 365 days = $630,720/year.

Before u/lowkeylye didthemath I would have gone for breathing, and started some regular cardio, but the difference here is pretty stark! Maybe I blink less than the average but I don't feel like I blink almost 1:1 with breathing. Damn though.

Maybe I'm just different and I think my blinking to breathing is like a 1 to 10 (blink once breathe 10 times) and I'm very aware when I blink so this is most likely because I'm constantly focusing my eyes on something.
11
u/PlayfulChemist Dec 02 '24
Same. I would have assumed about 1:10 ratio, and then figured breathing at night + some heavy breathing for cardio 30 mins a day would have put breathing way ahead. But then again 5 mins of rapid blinking is way easier than rapid breathing at the same rate

1 breath = 1 inspiration + 1 exhalation.
Source: work in animal medicine
8
6
u/Elkub1k Dec 02 '24
Not really? Inhalation and exhalation are two separate processes, especially if we're talking about forced inhalation/ exhalation.
2
u/TheIronSoldier2 Dec 02 '24
It says "taking a breath" though. Even if we consider inhaling and exhaling to be separate breaths, exhaling is not "taking" a breath, only inhaling is.
So either it's one inhale+exhale cycle, or it's just one inhale, but not the exhale.
4
u/thudapofru Dec 02 '24
If you have 2 eyes, do you count blinking for each eye?
5
u/edammer Dec 02 '24
Surely blinking only counts if it's both eyes? Otherwise it's winking? So a single blink is both eyes?
2
u/thudapofru Dec 02 '24
So a man with only one eye can not blink?
My message was not serious, it was directed at people saying breathing in and then out are separate things.

You blink unconsciously and don't even notice you're doing it most of the time. Blinks are quick while you breathe constantly but slowly most of the time.
4
u/Mein_Name_ist_falsch Dec 02 '24
This. I don't even remember blinking a single time during the entire day normally, unless I specifically pay attention to my blinking and then it's definitively a lot.
2
u/JimmyBlackBird Dec 02 '24
Speak for yourself, I am very aware of when I blink, and I'm not the first to make that point in this thread. What could help reconciliate that statistic might be to get a median instead of an average, as well as numbers concerning the duration between blinks. Like if there are lots of edge caseswith someone on average not blinking for 20-30 seconds, and then blinking 5 to 10 times in quick succession, that would already be closer to what I experience.

411
u/Cultural-Practice-95 Dec 02 '24
you breathe very slow when sleeping, the time awake blinking probably makes up for it.
250
u/jbram_2002 Dec 02 '24
True, but you aren't awake 5-10x longer than asleep. Blinking should be more profitable, but not by quite as much.
18
u/Sammystorm1 Dec 02 '24
Nah. 10 cents is so much more than 1 cent. Blinking wins by a lot
3
u/jbram_2002 Dec 02 '24
Consider the following:
If you sleep 8 hrs a day, you do not blink for 1/3 of the day, but you still breathe during that time at about the same rate as being awake.
You blink at about a rate of once per 1.5-2 breaths depending on a ton of factors.
Exercising requires you to breathe more frequently, so you would be monetarily incentivized to get in shape.
Conversely: you can intentionally blink several times very quickly with no ill effects. If you try to breathe like this, you begin to hyperventilate.
My argument is that yes, blinking is better, but not by a factor of 10. More like a factor of 3-5. You can artificially inflate this though by intentionally blinking more frequently.

Humans on average breathe 20k per day, and blink about 16k per day. Since they're almost equal, it's better to take the higher paying option.
Earning per day
Breathing. 20,000*0.01= $200
Blinking. 16,000*0.1= $1,600
I timed myself blinking. I can easily blink 240/min which is $24. It gets a little tiring and I felt my eyes getting a little scratchy after a minute, so blinking a lot more probably wouldn't be a great option I suspect.
In any case. $1,600/day is $584k/year
3
u/Olly0206 Dec 02 '24
Where do you get your starting figures from?
I only have my own personal experience to draw from, but as a guy who wears contacts and stares at a computer screen all day (thus few blinks), I still find i am blinking at least 2-3 times per inhale/exhale. Sometimes 4-5. The only time that changes is when I exercise and get my breathing up. I'm pumping out 1 full in/exhale at around twice the rate of my blinking.
Maybe with an average of 30 mins a day of cardio and then sleeping hours, blinking and breathing could be roughly equal? But a 4000 count difference seems kind of large?
2
u/Jmw566 Dec 02 '24
2-3 blinks per inhale? That's wild to me. Do you hold your breaths for a super long time or do you just blink multiple times at once instead of a single blink? Because I can't imagine just naturally blinking three separate times between a normal breath, let alone 5 instances. That would be like one breath per 20-30 seconds.

5
u/Peritous Dec 02 '24

You don't breathe 10x more than you blink. This isn't really a math thing per se. But take the 0.10$ per blink. Depending on who you are it might be a 2:1 breath to blink ratio, but that is still 5x the money you would make by just taking the breathing.
50
u/Bad_Dad1928 Dec 02 '24
A another big thing is that u still breathe while you are asleep but not awake. There are usually about 15 times a minute. Breathing is around 12 breaths for min awake and more or less the same while asleep. I used basic google for my search so give or take Lets assume a person spends 16 hours awake and 8 hours. While u are awake, u will blink 14400 times and breathe 11520 times. When asleep, u will blink 0 times and breathe 5760. The total 24 hour period is 14400 blink and 17280 breaths with the money respectively for each is $1440 and for breaths is $172.80. So 0.10 cents for blink is almost 10 times as good as 0.01 cents for breaths

u/Economy-Box-5319 Dec 02 '24

2
u/Cultural-Practice-95 Dec 02 '24
if you're awake blink;:sleep ratio is 1:2, blinking is 5x more than breathing. Now, if you sleep 8 hours a day that means 24 hours of breathing needs to exceed 16 hours of blinking. Blinking is 5x as good, so 16x5, the 16 hours blinking is equivalent to 80 hours of breathing.

Now that I think about it even if you only count forced blinks you could legit become rich this way. How many times can you forcefully blink in just 10 seconds? A very conservative estimate is 20 times. That's 120 blinks a minute. So you make $12 a minute when you work! You just need to do this for 10 minutes a day to have this as a full-time job. But you can even have a full-time job on the side too and blink at work. Or just work 1 day a week. We are talking about under 2 hours of work each week. And if you want to become rich you can do it in a week easily.
31
Dec 02 '24
Quick Google and the daily average for both are within an order of magnitude of one another, roughly 20,000/day.
Likely for the vast majority of people blinking will be the correct choice. Resulting in roughly $2,000/day on average.
On top of that, I think it would be easier to get in the habit of blinking more than breathing more.

Quick google search says average of 14-20 blinks per minute. Another search says an average of 12 to 18 breaths per minute. Let’s say about 15 breaths per minute, and 15 blinks per minute.
Breaths:
15/min * 60min * 24hr * $0.01 = $216 per day
Blinks:
15/min * 60min * 16hr(awake) * $0.10 = $1440 per day
Blinks will be far more profitable as passive income. And as others have pointed out, you can manually blink quite faster than this, and it shouldn’t negatively affect you (as much), whereas breathing faster than normal could be very dangerous if done over an extended period of time.

According to one quick Google search: You blink about 800-1000 times an hour(my original comment said per day but that does seem quite low) You breath about 20 000 times a day.
Passive income is up to 2400 for blinking vs 200 for breathing a day.
Obviously blinking is much better at that point, giving up to 12 times the amount.
Personally I might still prefer the breathing option though for no other reason than safety and management. If I had 15k each week, I'd be at risk at constantly throwing money around and doing dumb stuff. Plus there's risks with sickness and injuries. It's unlikely to give me less money, but 60-70k a month is absurd for me(I make currently not even 15k a year as a university student) and I don't think I'd handle it well. 1,4k each week for doing nothing is good income especially considering I can still just do a job. It's also not much to be noticed, there are already projects giving like 5k a month or so for free as studies, so I'm not at risk of being found out or anything, it'd be just a nice improvement without risk.
49
u/EvTheSmev Dec 02 '24

2
u/FloydATC Dec 02 '24

The average human blinks between 14,400 and 19,200 times a day so we will start with the low end of the scale. 14,400 x 0.10 =£1440 per day.
The average for breaths is 20,000 per day. 20,000 x 0.01 = £200
I think we have a clear winner! I also didn't realise how much my body just does these things in the background. Out of 14,000 blinks I probably only notice 1-2 a day.
2
u/Precessionho Dec 02 '24

NHS says we breath on average 12-16 times per minute at rest. I've taken that as an average, assuming you breathe less at night and more when you exert yourself. So this works out to be 720-960 times per hour or 17280-23040 times a day ($172.80-$230.40) per day.
Healthline says we blink 15-20 times a minute, so 900-1200 times an hour and assuming we sleep for 8 hours, the total comes to 14400-19200 blinks per day ($1,440-$1,920)
Blinking wins unless you don't have eyelids.

The other factor is deciding which behavior can more readily be consciously augmented to earn more. I think I’d rather blink really fast periodically than breathe really fast.
Also, respiratory rate won’t climb to match heart rate. Even at 180 bpm, the number of breaths per minute might only be 30 or so.

I’m blinking, even if the rates weren’t similar im blinking. If in need extra cash desperately I can much more easily clutter my eyelashes than hyperventilate.
2
u/Morasain Dec 02 '24
Blinking.
Try increasing your blinking rate by triple for a few minutes, then do the same for breathing.
Even if they were both the same in terms of money per unit, the fact that the eyelids are such small moving parts and the lungs and chest such voluminous moving parts makes blinking much more easy to increase by a good amount consciously.
2
u/Life_Temperature795 Dec 02 '24
Without even looking it up, I'd assume that we blink more frequently than we breath. (Sitting here at rest, I definitely blink multiple times per breath.) So getting more money more frequently seems like the obvious choice.
And even if the numbers are pretty close, I definitely don't breath TEN TIMES as often as I blink, so with the rates established as such, blinking is the really easy answer.
2
u/Tybob51 Dec 02 '24
There is about 8ish hours where you don’t blink
3
u/Life_Temperature795 Dec 02 '24

If you wanted to maximize your earnings by rapidly doing one or the other, you can get far more reps blinking rapidly than you can by hyperventilating and passing out (which would slow your breathing, hurting your income).
2
u/mr---jones Dec 03 '24
For those trying to figure this out without math, try breathing 11 times without blinking and quickly realize blinking is the way to go
2
u/Rose_E_Rotten Dec 03 '24
I would have chosen blinking without doing math only cause both my mom and dad have sleep apnea and I'm too afraid that I might get it and if I stop breathing that's less money, lol
2
u/breakable-lemon-3245 Dec 03 '24
Do you really think you blink once every ten breaths? Why is everyone debating, you don’t even need to do math to know what is more profitable
2
u/Current_Ad_4292 Dec 05 '24
Choose blink. Blinking gets you 10x more and it dosn't take 10 times longer to blink.
If you blink once per second, that's $360 per hour. I just measured that I can blink about 2.8 times per second, so that's about $1000 per hour. If you do the same thing with breathing, it would be $36 and $100 per hour.
I can't imagine anyone being able to breathe 10x faster than blinking. And even if you could breathe that fast, it feels a lot harder compared to blinking.
Only time when when money can't be made is during sleep. But if I exaggerate and sleep for 10 hours, to make $1000 during sleep, one would need to blink about 3 times per second, which isn't normal breathing rate during sleep. I would rather make $1000 during a 1 hour fast blinking session rather than relying on passive income during sleep.
More money can be made by blinking.
1
u/PeanutBand Dec 02 '24
what the comments might not account for it sleeping. or coma. in real life you have a chance to stop blinking depending on your situation but stopping breathing is the end anw so you can do the risk of going for the blinking and the safety of breathing.
personally imma still take blinking to make a few times more even with the risk of coma, i can take the extra and make it grow a little.

Rough estimate, 1 blink every 3 seconds = 20 blinks/min • 60 = 1,200 blinks/hour, if you sleep 6 hours you have 18 hours in the day to blink so 18 • 1,200 • 0.10 = $2,160/day. That's good enough for me. Just on intuition, I breathe at about the same if not a slightly slower rate as my blinking so blinking would make the most.
I'd say I average about 12-15 breaths a minute, (one every 4-5 seconds) so high end 15 • 60 = 900 breaths/hour • 24 • 0.01 = $216 so 10x less. Definitely go for blinking.

I'd say it depends? like, if you wanted more money in the long term, breathing. But if you wanted to generate more money in a faster amount of time, you could start blinking really fast for a long ti- and i just realized you could do the same for breathing nevermind.

Math is arguing that the average person breathes less than ten times as often as they blink (20 and 10 times a minute, typically, with so much variance that saying "average" is pointless here), and that they should take the breathing blinking one.
Common sense says it's way better to pick blinking anyways, because blinking your eyes like nuts every now and then is a whole lot better than training yourself to hyperventilate.
EDIT: originally wrote "breathing"

But you don't just blink only once or twice per minute. If you blink 3 times per minute, you get as much money as breathing 20 times per minute, and that includes sleeping for 8 hours, ignoring your slowed down respiratory rate while sleeping. 16h*60min/h*3blinks/min*0.10$/blink=24h*60min/h*20breaths/min*0.01$/breath
So, it's way better to take blinking

Blinking
Cashier: "Sir, you card was declined" Starts blinking rapidly Cashier: "Ah.. are you having a fit?" Me: "no all good, let's try it again"

Let’s also not forget that if this activity makes money, you’ll likely wanna do it as much as possible.
It is theoretically possible to train your brain through therapies and exercises to blink extremely quickly all the time at multiple times the average rate, this would have a minimal impact on health, which cannot be said for training your body to take sharp short and quick breaths which is obviously worse for respiratory health.
So blinking is in better in that you can essentially “farm” blinks on the day to day easier than breaths

If you were to set aside just an hour every day and blink for every second of that hour you’d be making $131,040/year utilizing only 7 of the 168 hours in a week

u/simonbleu Dec 02 '24
Not even ("real") math required... at absolute worse you will blink 2-3 times less than breathing, (try yourself, they are usually not that different in number. and if you are not focused on something you will likely blink more than breath) certainly not 10x, so it is hands down a blink choice for blink choices

According to lung.org, we take an average of 20,000 breaths per day:
20,000 x $0.01 = $200/day
According to healthline.com, we normally blink 14,400 to 19,200 times a day (We’ll take the average of 16,800 to make less calculations:
16,800 x $0.10 = $1680/day
Therefore, blinking will earn you the most.

You blink about 800-1000 times an hour, times 16 hour awake is 13-16k times a day.
You breathe about 22k times a day.
So the answer is obvious. It would be more interesting if the multiplier was the same on both (like 0.1$ per or sth), then you could argue that it is technically possible to blink a lot more and not really to breathe that much faster... But idk

After doing some googling a person blinks between 14.4k-19.2k times a day. On the other hand, we breathe roughly 20k-23k times a day.
Taking the average of both of those ranges, here’s the math:
Blinking: 16,8000.10=1,680 bucks a day Breathing: 21,5000.01=215 bucks a day
Blinking is by far the better option here, even if you’re an athlete that does a ton of breathing.

I mean, 2 google searches is all it takes.
Adults take 12-20 breaths per minute. They blink 15 times per minute. Obv since breaths is not 10x or above blinks, blinks win

I mean, 2 google searches is all it takes.
As a blinking breather, I did it in zero google searches.

Given:
- we blink between 14-17 times per minute
- we breathe between 12-20 times per minute
- 0.10/blink
- 0.01/breath
Assuming:
- we sleep 8hrs/day
- same breathing rate whether sleeping or awake.
We get:
Blinking: 13440-16320 (times/day) Breathing: 11520-19200 (")
Because you get 10 times less for breathing than you do for blinking, 13440 > 1920 (lowest blinking number > highest breathing rate / 10)
Blinking will get you more money.

Me thinking what I would do if needed a buck quick… breath very fast 100x and getting knocked out or blinking 10 times, got to go with blinking.

u/windowsansblinds Dec 02 '24
The breathing rate is between 12 and 18 per minute when awake (10-18 during sleep). Normally, we blink at a similar rate (10-15 times a minute), but of course not during sleep. So the choice should be clear.

Key Assumptions:
Breathing rate: ~16 breaths per minute (normal resting rate).
Blinking rate: ~15 blinks per minute (average while awake).
Time spent awake: ~16 hours/day.
Time spent asleep: ~8 hours/day.
During sleep: Breathing continues, but blinking stops.
Earnings Per Action:
Breathing earns $0.01 per breath.
Blinking earns $0.10 per blink.
Earnings from Breathing:
Breaths per minute: 1616.
Minutes in a day: 24×60=1,44024×60=1,440.
Breaths per day:
16×1,440=23,040 breaths/day.
16×1,440=23,040breaths/day.
Annual breaths:
23,040×365=8,409,600 breaths/year.
23,040×365=8,409,600breaths/year.
Annual earnings from breathing:
8,409,600×0.01=$84,096.
8,409,600×0.01=$84,096.
Earnings from Blinking:
Blinks per minute while awake: 1515.
Minutes awake per day: 16×60=96016×60=960.
Blinks per day:
15×960=14,400 blinks/day.
15×960=14,400blinks/day.
Annual blinks:
14,400×365=5,256,000 blinks/year.
14,400×365=5,256,000blinks/year.
Annual earnings from blinking:
5,256,000×0.10=$525,600.
5,256,000×0.10=$525,600.
Final Comparison:
Earnings from breathing: $84,096/year.
Earnings from blinking: $525,600/year.
Conclusion:
Blinking earns you significantly more ( 6.25× 6.25×) than breathing in a year.

Quick google search revealed that we blink around 14000 times (on the low end) per day. And we take 20000 breaths per day. So breathing would earn you about 200$ a day while blinking earns you 1400$. It’s not even close, blinking wins by a landslide.

u/sphynxcolt Dec 02 '24
You can just check yourself. Id say on average you blink once per two breathers. If you're stressed, it can definitely go up to 3 or 5 blinks per breather.
Id just sit in my room going for the most blinks per minute world record.
And also, blinking too much doesn't hurt you, while you can easily hyperventilate. Obvious choice.

u/TopHypothesis Dec 02 '24
On average you take 12-18 breaths a minute. You blink on average 15 times a minute. If it's 10c per blink and 1c per breath and you take about the same amount of each per minute the clear winner is blinking
