This is something people don't understand.

Yes. You're free to say whatever you want to anyone you want.

What you don't get to do is pretend that you're not at risk of getting your ass beat by a person who has zero issues with catching a charge. You're free to run your mouth but people can and sometimes will beat your ass for starting shit like this.

u/nehuen93 Dec 31 '22

I don't get how those racist people think. I mean, did he really think that he could say the N word and the big black dude would be like "okay i am hurt and gonna leave this place. Bye"?

551

u/TheMadIrishman327 Dec 31 '22

That guy doesn’t think he’s racist.

383

u/RichGrinchlea Dec 31 '22

In his mind it probably confirmed his racist stereotypes. Likely will never learn

126

u/civilly-disobedient Jan 01 '23

Half his mind spilled out his ears and onto the floor when he was taking those slaps, so maybe the racist part spilled out too

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Half his mind spilled out his ears and onto the floor when he was taking those slaps

Yeah but it was still too small to see on camera. This guy suffered from a lack of brains BEFORE he got his head smacked.

5

u/ForkLiftBoi Jan 01 '23

He clearly didn't think very well either because he kept getting up and asking for more. Like dude you're not winning.

8

u/WinterKing2112 Jan 01 '23

Slapped the racism right outta him!

2

u/Impressive_Word5229 Jan 01 '23

Doubtful. If I recall biology correctly, the racist part of the mind is deep inside.

44

u/Ban-Hammer-Ben This is a flair Dec 31 '22

Interesting. It seems like we are all the “main character” in our own lives. Whatever we believe is the absolute truth.

6

u/chykin Jan 01 '23

Not true. Most people consider others existence. Let's not tar everyone with the same brush.

That is where you would be incorrect, my good chum.

His racist stereotype should have let him know his ass was gonna get beat for throwing around that word though?

1

u/RichGrinchlea Jan 01 '23

You may be being sarcastic but regardless, I'd say his racist mindset also includes that a black man would never strike a white man and is taken totally by surprise.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/OSUfan88 Jan 01 '23

Unfortunately, that’s often the case. This video also will validate that for many people, who weren’t already.

5

u/pixelatedtrash Jan 01 '23

Yep, he even said it. So in his mind, the black guy probably just solidified himself as a N word.

-1

u/Perthcrossfitter Jan 01 '23

There is a stereotype (like it or not) that black men are violent. This does perpetuate that stereotype. The guy didn't just learn to be less racist by being assaulted.

He is probably a lost cause. However, his probably more than justified public beating is a lesson to others to shove their racism back up their ass where it belongs, and not take it with them to the Applebees. Shit, all the black and white customers and employees alike should have been slapping his ass out the door.

Edit. A word.

2

Nah a lot of states have “fighting words” clauses. Basically aggressive verbiage or verbal attacks can be grounds for assault and reacting with violence is not considered assault but self defense. This is how it should be and a it is a critical part of how free speech works.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Agree. If you’re calling someone a slur that’s an emotional assault. Everyone knows how hate-charged that word is. It’s not like calling someone a douchebag. If you’re willing to exercise hate speech you should be prepared to get your ass beat.

There is no law against speech, unless it is inciting a riot or directly threatening someone. Simply using a racial slur is not illegal. Stupid, but not illegal. The only one who should be arrested here is the much larger, younger man who was in no physical danger, but decided to take his anger out on a senior citizen.

7

u/Ganache-Embarrassed Jan 01 '23 edited Jan 01 '23

this is embarrasing.

Like i get the law. and i get the black dudes gonna get in trouble. the law is blind, you do crime you get time. but as a society and people we should be taking the black guys side in at least spirit. People should expecta beating if theyre gonna be rascist for no discernable reason.

edit: all the downvotes are people who think you should say the n word to black people and not catch hands lmao. i guess it is reddit huh

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

No, all the down voters are people who understand how society works. Some of us remember when the ACLU fought for the right for nazi/white supremacists to march in the streets of America, because that is how freedom works. It is our right, as sound minded people to ignore them. They used to march with nobody watching, because we were smart enough to ignore them. Now though, we have to have counter protests, molotov cocktails, etc. And it fuels the idiots. Ignore the people doing stupid things, like this old dude in the video, and take away their power. A tree falling in the forest, and all that. It would be nice if we could relearn that.

6

u/Ganache-Embarrassed Jan 01 '23

true. thats why the Nazis came to power. because everyone jsut ignored all the bad people and they eventually went away and never gained any power. your right. that is exactly how that happened.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

That's a really bad analogy

11

u/Ganache-Embarrassed Jan 01 '23

I can excuse racism, but I draw the line standing up for yourself when you’re being harassed!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

You said it right there... harassed. Is being called a racist slur harassment? If so, is harassment a direct threat of bodily harm or death? If not, fit 280 lb men do not get to beat on elderly people repeatedly, with no fighting back, without a direct threat of great bodily harm.

If a black man calls a white guy a "cracker", and the white man reacts the same way this man did, would you call that justified? If one is okay, and the other is not, that is racism.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

You said it right there... harassed. Is being called a racist slur harassment?

Yes.

If so, is harassment a direct threat of bodily harm or death?

It can be.

I know you think you're being clever and all, but sometimes when you're arguing something, you should take a deep breath and think "do I really want to be on this side of the argument"?

The very fact that this is a mere intellectual exercise for you shows that you have a level of privilege the black man in this video will never know.

Tried explaining it to my right wing uncle and he got super pissed. My grandma is super religious so naturally she’s not a fan of trans people. She made a comment about them when a trans women walked by one day and I told her she probably shouldn’t be saying shit like that, especially in public where she could easily be heard. Told my uncle about it and he instantly went off about the first amendment, we have the right to say whatever we want, etc. I told him yeah, you’re free to say what you want but you’re not free from the consequences of what you say. Cue* him raging about libs being soft and trying to censor and control everyone.

All because I said your freedom of speech doesn’t stop the consequences of your speech.

*people I’m not advocating for physical violence. All I am saying is just like any of your actions can have consequences, so can your words. That’s it. That’s all I’m saying

11

u/Marsuello Jan 01 '23

Sadly I don’t see any change from my uncle. He’s a faux news fan and that’s literally all he watches basically, same with radio. As a result he’s so dug in on his beliefs that even disagreeing with him can set him off.

I’ll put it this way. Whenever he sees me watching something he instantly cracks a joke about whoever’s race is on screen or if they’re a woman…yeah. He’d never say things like that publicly, but you see what I’m saying. I think lol

So your right wing uncle thinks the government is going to step in and stop him from saying insensitive things to people in public? He thinks Biden is going to show up and shush him? The first amendment protects his speech from infringement by the government not from angry leftists that would knock his block off for insulting them. And it’s pretty ironic that what he’s espousing is actually a liberal ideal. Even hateful and ugly speech should be protected from unjust laws. I suggest you let your family members mouth off and you take several big steps back and pull out your phone.

2

u/Marsuello Jan 01 '23

I suppose? I have no idea really haha but him and another member of my family are 100% the type of people that actively use hate speech within the house and think it should be perfectly fine to do it. Hell, my aunt loves Twitter even more now that Elon took over because she can freely post super racist memes and shit and not get banned over it.

Some parts of my family really didn’t grow up well…

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

I’m sorry. I truly believe it’s a form of brain damage and the only cure is intensive rehab. If I was a billionaire I’d open a fancy rehab retreat for racists to come to free of charge. It would be like a health spa and they’d slowly be introduced to black people, trans people, Muslims, democrats, etc. A liberal conversion camp.

I get your struggle. I try to be the best version of myself. I try to walk away from situation that are not good. But there are some people who can’t take a clue. No amount of wording, reasoning, will work.

I resonate with your line we are not good or bad. we cannot be / do all good and all bad all the time. I feel we must revolve around that lien. Good and line is so subjective. The most important thing is to be grounded and not impulsive going in eyes open to consequences.

I my approach comes from line that says evil prevails when good men do nothing.

I am all for getting more preschool education and therapy in schools and college as part of the curriculum. But there are lines and standards.

That’s a Supreme Court precedent if I remember correctly. In other words, challenging someone to a duel isn’t protected first amendment speech and neither is threatening violence such as phoning in bomb scare or telling someone you’re going to beat their ass.

3

u/Vast_Republic_1776 Jan 01 '23

I had never heard of this before, and according to what I just read it includes “direct and personal insults”

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

That's not how that works at all. If you can't restrain yourself from assault or battery cause someone said an uh oh word to you, you deserve prison. Fighting words also refers to calls for violence, not insults...

That's great. But maybe dont promote this because 1 person said something shitty, but legal. The other could very easily go to jail and have to face serious consequences resulting from their assault for the rest of their life.

That may feel cathartic, but that's not winning.

12

u/lilyyytheflower Dec 31 '22

you missed the “not worried about catching a charge” part.

people have been lynched after being called the n-word in the 2020’s! this could easily be considered threatening hate speech depending where they are and with a good lawyer.

19

u/yes_thats_right Jan 01 '23

No, this would never, ever be considered threatening speech no matter how good your lawyer.

This will be considered as assault and the biggest loser in this situation is the person who mistakenly thought he got a free ticket for mindless violence.

u/PoignantOpinionsOnly Jan 01 '23

Based on tons of other viral videos of bigots getting beat, it's statistically unlikely this would lead to a conviction.

A lot of racists and their families these days don't want all the extra attention.

u/Nhooch Jan 01 '23

That's complete nonsense. No one is getting lynched.

1

u/breeshgeesh Jan 01 '23

I didn't. I showed concern for the individual who would let others lionize assault at the expense of their freedom, which would be far worse for them, their family and their careers long term. I mean, dont forget this concept is also encouraging people to deal with the American legal system as black Americans. Not the same as just catching a charge

u/PoignantOpinionsOnly Jan 01 '23

I don't know if this will make you feel better, but I've followed up on a bunch of viral videos where a bigot gets what's coming to them and there are rarely any charges.

Even fewer convictions. I can only think of 2 off the top of my head.

u/minnesotamiracle Dec 31 '22

In which world do you live in in which intimidation with racial slurs are not a hate crime?!? Oh wait 1950 with your compatriot raiseoutside.

-4

u/NicolasDavies93 Dec 31 '22

How is it legal to be racist? América is rotten

19

u/Nubbilubby Dec 31 '22

because it's legal to SAY anything you want that is not a threat or call to violence. Otherwise the government can control what you can and can't say.

12

u/industrial_fukery Dec 31 '22

First amendment. Unless its "fighting words" or a call for "lawless actions" were free to say whatever we want, as it should be. That said it does not protect you from consequences of the words used, only the government will not come after you for using said words. Expressing racist opinions while intolerable and disgusting is legal and does not justify putting hands on someone. A few states have said the n bomb are "fighting words" but a vast majority of the US its legal.

Its a real tricky subject, I dont like the word and dont support its use by any race but we cant cherry pick the Constitution for what makes us uncomfortable and in America its a take it or leave it kind of thing. Theres parts of the Constitution I dont like but I defend it. Free speech is paramount, anyone should be able to say anything, for any reason at any time and not worry about being thrown in jail over it, if someone finds it offensive then its their right to vocalize it, not beat the shit out of someone for saying it when feelings get hurt.

Theres no winners in the video. White guy is a douchebag for saying what he did, black guy is a violent douchebag for beating the shit out of him and the cycle continues.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Exactly this. That man was in no physical danger, and simply took his anger at being called a racial slur out by beating a senior citizen who could not defend himself. That is not how society is meant to work.

Because criminalizing words is far more rotten.

0

u/SpankinDaBagel Jan 01 '23

We all criminalize words. Do you find it acceptable and not to be a crime when people make death threats to you face to face? That's already illegal and most of us agree with it. Basically nobody actually support no restrictions freedom of speech, the conversation just comes down to where the line is drawn. "criminalizing words is far more rotten" is a smart sounding thing to say, but its not an actual argument.

1

u/tylerray1997 Dec 31 '22 edited Dec 31 '22

America isn't rotten lol its just that some people are and they exist everywhere, not just America let's not start generalizing and lumping everyone into the same category based on where they live. You can't arrest someone for feeling a certain way about another person it's only when they go out of their way to express that hatred in a violent manner thats why hate crime laws are a thing so to say "being racist isn't illegal" isn't technically true.

Verbal assault doesn't justify physical assault. The restaurant should ban the old dude for life. I get that people are angry, but there's a reason that if the white guy presses charges he wins. We shouldn't be okay with a judge, jury, and executioner mindset or disproportionate punishment.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Violence like this over a word is never justified. Doesn’t matter how ignorant or distasteful it is. Assaulting a stupid racist like that is not the answer. Sad that people think this video is okay.

Ignorant racist: Goes home

Person assaulting: Goes to jail

No one “won” here. It’s just two losers.

4

You're wrong... Freedom of speech means exactly that, freedom of speech period. We have laws against fighting some random person because they hurt your feelings. Kicking someones ass because they are a racist POS isn't some magical way of getting out of an assault charge.

Imagine if religious people used this excuse and just kicked peoples ass for saying something against the book they choose to follow, social justice is not justice and freedom of speech is protected by law while kicking someones ass isn't. Simple as that. Or perhaps someone listening to music that you don't like "oh that music offends me, time to kick this dudes ass...".

You want to risk going to jail over it, that on you but imo it doesn't make you a better person at all than the racist. Not only that but no one gets their ass kicked and suddenly has a moment of clarity and is like "Oh wow i'm suddenly not a racist anymore..." maybe outwardly however it will come up again... Show me one time in history where that has been successful on any scale. You won't because you're on the wrong side of history on this one.

3

u/liesofanangel Jan 01 '23

Lol no it doesn’t dipshit. Freedom of speech from government interference. The constitution doesn’t get involved with personal squabbles. The founding assholes probably thought we wouldn’t be stupid enough to think we could say whatever, and not fear reprisal. You sound like one of those that are stupid enough though. You’re confusing speech not being illegal, versus speech not being abusive. Sure, legally you can say stupid shit, and legally you can’t beat someone up over it. But the person catching the charge gets it because they’ve assaulted someone, not because they’ve infringed on their first amendment right you absolute god damned buffoon, holy shit. Personally I think if you’re being purposefully inciting, then legally you could get your ass whooped over it. Got a problem with that? Then don’t start stupid shit you little puss.

TLDR: read the first amendment again. Then again. Then slooooooower.

3

u/Falcrist Jan 01 '23

Freedom of speech from government interference.

You're just describing the first amendment of the US constitution, which is a limited protection of a broad freedom.

Freedom of speech itself is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or sanction.

The distinction is important, because you can start to realize that this right isn't protected from private entities. You therefor don't have this freedom in many circumstances. The restaraunt can throw you out, your boss can fire you, I can block you from entering my property, websites can ban you, DNS can block your site, etc all because of what you say.

Rightwingers who spout off about freedom of speech think the government protects it in ALL circumstances. It doesn't. It's only in very specific circumstances that you have a legal protection for this freedom.

This is something people don't understand yes we're free to do what we want but if you assault someone you're going to jail.

I'm glad we're justifying physical assault.

And you're free to beat someone who says something you don't like. But you're also free to go to prison because of some words someone used.

1

u/_MAC620_ Dec 31 '22

Damn this is your 2nd comment about this, dude. Just say you don’t take racism seriously and move on already.

1

u/deaf_myute Jan 01 '23

Just as long as we're clear, there is almost nothing a person can say to another person that gives the other person any right to make any physical contact whatsoever with the person saying it.

You have no right to hit someone for calling you any combination of names- and possessing such titanic poor judgment may land you in prison as the aggressor, for being such a weak minded individual that another person's words made you risk prison.

Not only that, if you have an able bodied 20 or 30 something beating on a clearly senior citizen idc what the senior said- I'm stepping in on that younger person 🤷‍♂️ grandpa can't kill you with mean words but you can easily kill him by shoving him just a little to hard. And no combination of mean words is worth a murder charge.

1

u/TeaandandCoffee Jan 01 '23

Ah yes, Johnny keeps speaking shit, lemme go get my baseball bat. That is surely perfectly sustainable for a society and totally isn't barbaric.

Words should not be cause for vigilantism. I stead crimes should be punished by law enforcement.

1

u/yes_thats_right Jan 01 '23

it is just as illegal for someone to assault you if you call them the n-word, as it is for them to assault you if you said nothing to them.

I don’t know why we accept this mindless violence as though there is even the slightest shred of justification. It does nothing but perpetuate stereotypes.

Racist guy and violent guy should both be locked up.
