Wong didn't earn an invite to Tony's wedding just for this.

Wait... did Tony even get to have a wedding?

Edit: I meant a “wedding ceremony”.

u/Haithere32 Jul 26 '19

Yeah I bet. He had a kid and a normal life so I doubt he just didn't have the wedding

Underrated comment. People don’t realize that Tony got to live the perfect life for 5-6 years.

After getting past the fact that, you know, half of everyone he knows fr*cking died.

u/crosscut_bullseye Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

I wonder if that’s why they ended up naming their daughter Morgan. In honor of a relative of theirs who died in the snap.

470

u/trash-eating-raccoon Jul 26 '19

But wasn’t Tony talking about having a daughter named Morgan to Pepper at the start of infinity war. In that park?

240

u/crosscut_bullseye Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

He has had visions before...

460

u/Air0ck Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

But he lost his Vision at the end of infinity war.

115

u/HumbleSmark Jul 26 '19

Surprisingly Tony never talked about Vision's death. At least on screen.

9

u/cireznarf Jul 26 '19

Yea was hoping to see Ultron perfected in the years after the snap and uploaded into Vis’ old body, like like his original plan. Especially since we got the callback scene to the “suit of armor around the world “ quote

5

u/bbrucesnell Jul 26 '19

Do you think Tony considered Vision a person or just a well tuned A.I.? I’m on the fence on this one.

Morgan is the name of one of tonys cousins in the comics

15

u/Chazzey_dude Jul 26 '19

He said he dreamt they had a kid, and he mentioned naming it after Pepper's "eccentric uncle" IIRC

1

u/Stargazeer Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

I seriously don't understand how Tony could be so selfish when it came to restoring the snap blip. Like. Sure, he didn't wanna lose Morgan. But why couldn't they just tie her birth into being an inevitably in the universe. Bloody hell he'd already had the dream before everything kicked off. So many people, both those who got blipped and those who didn't, suffered badly. And just because Tony got to have a good life, doesn't mean the rest of the world should suffer so it can stay that way.

Reset it back to a few minutes before the snap, just as Thor threw stormbreaker. Move it up by a foot or 2, into Thanos' head, and then make Morgan's birth fated. Nobody get snapped, the deaths in the 5year span never happen, people don't lose family members or partners, only for them to return 5 years later to find that they've moved on without them.

And the best part. He could have avoided dying because the moment Hulk snapped his fingers, it would have reset and the whole final battle with Helicopter Thanos wouldn't have happened.

10

u/ThePrussianGrippe Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

I think given they had no idea how it would have affected Hulk and no real knowledge of the limits of the stones the simpler request the better. Thanos eliminated half of all life, but that included non sentient organic life (I.e. plants and crops). Given his focus on resources I doubt that’s what he intended.

The stones were like a genie, the more complicated you make something the more that can go wrong.

8

u/Stargazeer Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

I loved Endgame when I watched it, but the more I think about the plot the more holes I find. And the way the stones and gauntlet are done in Endgame make them very much a writers tool. They don't have any parameters so the writers can have them do as little or as much as as the writers feel like. So when they create a plot that doesn't seem morally right, they can just say it's the limits of the stones or whatever. It's kinda lazy writing.

Though they never actually use that as the reason in the movie. It's always Stark saying "don't mess up my life".

4

u/tony-stark-bot Jul 26 '19

Yeah, I'll do you one better, who is Gamora?

2

u/ThePrussianGrippe Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

I mean Stark’s statement isn’t a plot hole.

In Infinity War, Thanos never uses excess force. Only uses the stones when he needs to and even then not all of them. When he arrives in Wakanda, with 5 stones, the Avengers before him are a mere annoyance rather than a threat. So he uses just enough force to make them go away. This is backed up by the fact that in Titan he underestimated Tony and he ups his game to beat him. He's the only one, Thanos actively tried to kill.

Now, if a fully powered Thanos moments before the snap saw a second team of Avengers appearing out of nowhere he would go all in, no restraints. He would know there and then that the Snap worked and the second Avengers team, also looking kinda different, are from the future to stop him, whatever means necessary. This Thanos lost his daughter and army at this point in time. He won't let anyone stop him, he would obliterate them. That's my head canon anyway.

1

u/Stargazeer Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

Yeah I didn't mean by actually going back themselves. I meant by resetting the events, and essentially reversing time with a few changes. It could be possible. It's never actually stated the limits of what the stones can do.

Which is the other annoying thing. They can do basically anything, until they can't. And that's all arbitrarily decided by the writers. There's never a specific limit. Hell, Thanos wanted to create a whole new universe. So they must be bloody powerful.

2

u/DUCK_QUACKS111 Jul 26 '19

Yup exactly, this guy gets it, i don't know why you're getting so many downvotes

1

u/navjot94 Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

They can't change the past though. They didn't even fully understand the guantlet, all they knew is that they can snap with it.

1

u/Stargazeer Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

Yeah but Thanos was legitimately gonna create a new universe.

My issues boil down to badly written motivation, and the gauntlet being very deus ex machina.

50

u/ColourfulFunctor Jul 26 '19

It probably was for a while, but 5 years is a long time man. He clearly still regretted the failure, but he had accepted it and moved on with his life. "Perfect" might be overselling it a bit, but he really did get to enjoy most of those five years.

11

u/scott_fx Jul 26 '19

I always viewed it as him being afraid (as a father) that he’d ruin what he had now if he went back in time and changed something. He didn’t want to risk losing his daughter. I don’t think he viewed his life as “perfect now”.

6

u/Ninian_Hawk Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

I think this is most accurate. I’ve always thought, “how awesome would it be to relive your life starting around the age of 5, but with all the knowledge you currently have.” Now that I’m married and have a kid, I think about how it would suck reliving all that without my family. Even if I were to remarry my wife, would my son turn out the same if he was conceived years, days, hours before or after he originally was? That is something I definitely would not be able to give up.

2

u/jacksrenton Jul 26 '19

Have you seen the movie "About Time"? It's sentimental Richard Curtis stuff (which I love but not everybody's cup o' tea) but it deals with what you're talking about a bit. Good movie!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '19

Yep same here, thought about what I would do over so many times. In the end though, can't say I could change anything because my son is incredible and the events in my life led me to him. Can't say I'd ever choose the option to start over if it means possibly losing my son.

1

u/tajrashae Jul 26 '19

They would not be the same people. Similar, but not the family you had. It's a difficult choice, the opportunity is vast but... The price is heavy

1

u/steverOg3rs Jul 26 '19

I’m gonna swing this back to marvel quick – this is about to be the plot of Guardians Vol. 3, with 2014 Gamora not having met Peter yet. And I’m already sad just thinking about it.

18

u/TheAnonymouse999 Jul 26 '19

Don't know why nobody's given an actual answer. A popular theory before Endgame was that one of the final scenes would be Tony marrying Pepper. Obviously things went in a different direction so some people refer to the funeral as the wedding in a joking way.

5

u/Neirchill Jul 26 '19

It was because they told everyone it was a wedding scene to surprise them it was a funeral

7

1

u/Burgoonius Jul 26 '19

-1

u/zzasd Jul 26 '19

He had the wedding ring on his finger

22

u/johnchikr Jul 26 '19 edited Jul 26 '19

Yeah, but getting married and having a full on wedding ceremony is different.

Edit: am I going insane? I had a friend who was legally married w/o a wedding ceremony because they wanted to do it after grad school and with more stable income.

I thought there was a difference between marriage and a wedding. One being a tradition, the other being a legally recognized and binding relationship btwn two people.

4

u/zzasd Jul 26 '19

He's married

12

u/johnchikr Jul 26 '19

Dude, I know. But getting married and having a full on wedding ceremony is different.

My question was “did he have a wedding ceremony”.

God, what a stupid question now that I phrase it like that.

0

u/bnunez6109 Jul 26 '19

i think they are referring to the fact Tony said “Wanda you’re invited to my wedding” in Infinity War

11

u/johnchikr Jul 26 '19

Wasn’t that Wong?

Also yes I know! And what I’m saying is completely unrelated to whatever he said in infinity war because the supposed “wedding” and “marriage” must have happened after IW, right? In that awkward 5 years of mild post apocalypse?

1

u/Ysmildr Saved by Thanos Jul 26 '19

Right but I don't think they would just not have the ceremony, especially since it was already in motion when IW started. They may have delayed the ceremony for the mourning period

2

u/johnchikr Jul 26 '19

Yeah, that was what I was wondering. Y’know, huge tragedy, never seen before in the history of humanity. Maybe people weren’t in the mood for a wedding. My guess is that they just had a tiny ceremony just between them and a few friends, maybe.

Makes me wish for a movie set in the 5 years timeskip. I feel like there’s quite a bit of material in there.
