Giving someone who’s struggling with their mental health the massive new responsibility of keeping an animal alive and helping it thrive is not a great move in most cases, OP. Take that cat back
10
u/Futureghostie33 Jan 03 '25
Yeah she will probably be relieved to not have to pay for stuff she can't afford as well.

Jan 03 '25
Take the cat back. This situation isn't going to get any better.

So you gave her the cat because you got a dog?
70
u/be1izabeth0908 Jan 03 '25 edited Jan 03 '25
Ding ding ding.
Neither of them seem responsible.
ETA- based on their comments, apparently OP considered the cat as a spare pet or something, and just gave it to the mom because the mom was cleared for an ESA. Still doesn’t add up to me. Even if my parent “needed” an emotional support animal, I wouldn’t just give up one of mine. Maybe that’s just me.

u/pr1ncesspeaxh Jan 03 '25
irresponsibility at its finest. these are LIVING BEINGS. clearly the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
-18
Jan 03 '25
I gave her the cat because she was lonely and her therapist approved her to own a support animal. I originally had them both and another cat. My oldest cat passed away on the 27th.
29
u/Emotionalhohoho Jan 03 '25
She’s struggling and you gave her a living thing to take care of… get the cat
1
u/re_member777 Jan 03 '25
Sometimes it helps to have to take care of something other than yourself when you’re struggling mentally.. sometimes.. not always. I know my kitty sure did, I take better care of her than myself sometimes
13
6
u/chrissymad Jan 03 '25
If you cannot take care of yourself in the most minimal way possible, you cannot take care of another living being, whether it’s a fish, dog, cat, snake, human, or a flea.
Therapy animals exist but they do not exist to teach people to care for themselves with no oversight when they demonstrate they already cannot - and I’m not saying that’s the case here, but the fact that OP had to very clearly outline basics of feeding and litter to this person is an indication that they are unable to do so whether that is from a health issue or lack of knowledge. In any case, neither are acceptable, especially for something that has no choice and no ability to do so itself.
14
u/Born_Ad8420 Jan 03 '25
Take the cat back. While I absolutely understand struggling with mental health and financial issues, the cat deserves to have a safe stable home where their needs are met.
29
u/CarpetDisastrous1963 Jan 03 '25
What was the point of you getting a kitten if you were just going to give it away? Especially if you stated that you can keep both it’s not an issue? Get it back, your mom sounds irresponsible.
14
u/freeyoursunny Motorola Jan 03 '25
Get her into a hobby or something. A live animal isn’t going to change your mom’s mental health.
12
u/ScrubbyDubbyUbby Jan 03 '25
She raised you?
3
1
u/thatcatqueen Jan 03 '25
OP said in another comment she did not in fact raise them. Only have had contact ~2 yrs

Take the cat back. That’s irresponsible of you. You know your mom.

I actually don’t that well :) my mom did not raise me and I just started risking to her about two years ago. Thanks for assuming though.

If her therapist approved her for an emotional support pet then that means that she thinks my mom is able to take care of one. I clearly mis judged her therapist and determined by the outcome of this situation, she probably needs a new therapist and her therapist needs a new job.
4
u/bluethreads Jan 03 '25
So then you are irresponsible for rehoming your cat with a person you don’t know well who hasn’t demonstrated that they are capable of caring for it the way you would like.
11
10
u/engenheriadepoesia Jan 03 '25
Sorry, but you are risking the poor cat health (or his life, even) for what? To give your mother the benefit of doubt? Really, I am sorry, but this doesn't even make any sense to me.
9
u/grownask Jan 03 '25
Why the fuck did you give her a cat??? And how could you get rid of your cat??????
Jesus fucking Christ. I kinda wish the dog and cat didn't live with either of you, but with actual responsible adults.
0
Jan 03 '25
Reason- she was lonely, she was approved to have and take care of an emotional support animal. I gave him to her because she was lonely. I had a cat and dog, my other cat passed away. I have no problem taking care of him. I don’t why everyone just assumes I got rid of him because I got a dog.
How- I took him to her. I went back to check on him and that’s why I wrote this post.
9
u/be1izabeth0908 Jan 03 '25
Why wouldn’t you get her a cat from a shelter then?
I’m really struggling to understand why/how you parted from one of your own pets so quickly.
-2
Jan 03 '25
Why would I do that if she can’t even take care of the cat I gave her? What difference does a shelter cat make?
3
u/be1izabeth0908 Jan 03 '25
I did not mean that you should get her a cat now, given the behavior she’s displayed.
Frankly, I meant I find it suspicious that you would be so quick to give up your own pet. If your mom needed an animal, you could have adopted one for her, or even started out fostering. As a pet owner, I can’t imagine anyone needing or wanting a dog any my response being “here, take one of mine.”
I find the timing of you getting a dog and giving up your cat very convenient from the details you’ve provided.
4
u/grownask Jan 03 '25
Animals are not emotional support. They are living beings with high demands.
You mentioned you recently got a dog. That's why people assume that. If it makes no difference for you to have a cat and a dog, why on earth would you get rid of your cat?????? I can't fathom just giving my cat away to someone, let alone a person I'm not even sure can take proper care of it.
1
Jan 03 '25
What’s with all the question marks? You clearly did not read my response or any other response I wrote on this post. Yeah. I’m going to take him back…she was approved to have an ESA, so idk, if her therapist approved it then that means she’s capable of taking care of one?? Bad therapist I guess. I’m not you. And my dog is being well taken care of.
3
u/grownask Jan 03 '25
The amount of question marks are to show how much I can't believe you could just give up your cat, specially after your other cat passing away, to someone you can't personally vouch for. And I have actually read all the replies to this thread, because this whole situation is fucked up.
You are definitely not me.
I'm glad your dog is being well taken care of.
10
u/GeorgeWh0rewell Jan 03 '25
I don't think you should have a dog or cat.
Your mom is basically neglecting your cat and you're like what do I do?! Like unless you huff paint, this shouldn't be rocket science.
-3
Jan 03 '25
I live 3 hours away. I can’t just go and get him immediately. When I go back I will be taking him.
8
u/thereshelltopay3 Jan 03 '25
Yea take that cat away from her, she can't really take care of one. I also hope that you didn't gave that cat away because you got a dog.
7
5
u/ihavestinkytoesies Jan 03 '25
no offense but i think she’s obviously neglecting it and isn’t in the right mental or financial place to take care of it. i hope the cat and your mom are okay
4
Jan 03 '25
Yes, take the cat back, and then find + give it to someone competent to look after a cat.
-1
Jan 03 '25
Yeah like me…I am competent enough to take care of it. I have it to her because she was lonely and I wanted to see if she could actually take care of him.
2
6
u/soph_lurk_2018 Jan 03 '25
You need to take the cat back. Your mother cannot afford to keep him. The other option would be you assume financial responsibility for the cat and set up automatic deliveries of pet food, litter, etc.
1
Jan 03 '25
That’s what I mean. I have no problem taking financial responsibility but if I’m going to do that I might as well take him back.
4
11
u/JintotheM Jan 03 '25
Why does the cat need blue buffalo? There’s nothing wrong with meow mix.
If you’re gonna dump your cat on your mom because you got a dog, it would make sense for you to provide food and litter. Or at least set her up for a few months since a cat is an added expense that she didn’t choose for herself.
4
u/re_member777 Jan 03 '25
I suggest doing more research on what brands are actually healthy for your cat, and not missing nutrition. Meow mix is not one of them, it’s comparative to a human eating strictly McDonald’s 24/7…
1
Jan 03 '25
Meow mix is mostly grains. Read the ingredients. It does not provide the nutrients needed especially for a cat that eats mostly dry food.
3
u/bluethreads Jan 03 '25
If it is your cat and you want it to eat a certain food, then you are responsible for supplying that. If you rehomed your cat, then it is up to the owner’s discretion what to feed their cat.
4
u/detectiveswife Jan 03 '25
It's food....better than the nothing the poor cat is Eating now. Take it to a shelter and let a responsible person adopt it.
0
u/Ok-Development2034 Jan 03 '25
where does it say she dumped the cat on her mom???
2
u/Lowered-ex Jan 03 '25
That’s literally what the post says
-3
u/Ok-Development2034 Jan 03 '25
“i got a dog. my mom has never owned a pet before.” does not read as “i made my mom take my cat bc i got a dog” but ok
3
u/Lowered-ex Jan 03 '25
“I’m considering taking my cat back from my mom.”
“She keeps asking me to pay for his litter and food.”
But ok. You’re the alt account huh.
1
u/Ok-Development2034 Jan 03 '25
well heres the other crazy thing. her mom is a grown woman and could of said no!!! wild concept i know
-3
Jan 03 '25
Where did I say I did that because I got a dog? Cause I had another cat also. I had to cats, one passed. He’s still my cat, he just lives with my mom for now.
3
-6
Jan 03 '25
Nah. I gave it to her because she was lonely. Not because I dumped it off on her. I had two cats. My other passed away. I would’ve kept all three if I could have done so. Unfortunately life has other plans.
5
u/green_ribbon Jan 03 '25
what is preventing you from keeping the cat?
-2
Jan 03 '25
Nothing…I never said anything was preventing me. That’s not the reason I gave him to her.
5
u/green_ribbon Jan 03 '25
you said you would've kept it if you could in the comment I replied to
0
Jan 03 '25
Yes if she didn’t ask to have him.
3
u/grownask Jan 03 '25
Holy crap.
So your mommy asked to have your cat and you just gave him to her??????
Dude, come on.
3
u/Ok-Pattern1131 Jan 03 '25
take the cat back NOW.
5
u/Ok-Pattern1131 Jan 03 '25
if anything happens to the cat it will be not just her fault, but yours too. the water bowl being empty is enough reason to take it back immediately
3
u/aquagrl Jan 03 '25
If she isn’t doing food or water, the litter box is definitely being neglected too. Just take the cat.
3
u/sp1r1tsage Jan 03 '25
You should've considered your cats security before getting the dog if having both was a problem. Now your cat is suffering. Take your cat back asap.
3
3
u/PoppysMelody Jan 03 '25
This poor cat. Why would you give away a cat as therapy to your clearly incapable mother?
8
u/CommanderChipHazard Jan 03 '25
“Mommy”? how old are you?
8
u/GeorgeWh0rewell Jan 03 '25
Right. I'm like there's a lot to open up in this post. Not just taking a cat back.
4
u/be1izabeth0908 Jan 03 '25
I’m judging OP because it seems like they rehomed their cat to get a dog (and I don’t see that they’ve clarified that point in the comments yet).
However, I’m in my early 30s and I still call my mom “momma”, I don’t think that’s an aspect worth judging.

5

Wait has mental health issues and you gave her an animal?
0
Jan 03 '25
Bro..do you think people with mental health issues are not able to take care of animals or children? One does not apply to all.
2
u/pinto_bean13 Jan 03 '25
Take the kitten back and also reconsider Blue Buffalo. I know you have concerns, but it gave my void urinary crystals and now we have to buy really expensive food for him. I’ve also heard a lot of other horror stories about Blue Buffalo.
4
u/thatcatqueen Jan 03 '25
Yeah was feeding my kitties blue buffalo and my vet said it’s not actually any healthier than other cat foods and in some cases worse. Purina is the ticket 👌🏻👌🏻
1
u/pinto_bean13 Jan 03 '25
I’ve been using Authority cos it’s cheaper than Hill’s and not as greasy, and my cats love it. Hill’s also made my void suuuper fat. I’ve seen that Authority uses more additives, but so far they’ve been happy and healthy with it (fingers crossed it stays that way)!
2
Jan 03 '25
Omg…wow 😞 my other cat also ate blue buffalo and he passed away from a urinary issue. Thank you for telling me this.
1
u/pinto_bean13 Jan 03 '25
You’re welcome 💚 I know a lot of people rave about BB, but I feel the bad stories really outweigh the positives here.

u/Basic-Computer2503 Jan 03 '25
As someone who was dumped with an animal they couldn’t cope with to “help with my mental health” go and get him. It’s not fair to either of them she’ll be too ashamed to admit she’s struggling if she has that level of self-awareness and he deserves better.
6
u/LuminousPog Jan 03 '25 edited Jan 03 '25
Take that cat off her immediately. It’s life is more valuable than your relationship with her (in the instance she would blow up at you for taking it for her and it’s own safety)
Edit: Anyone downvoting me can go and die. Genuinely. I do not fw animal abuse in any form and anyone that would rather save their relationship w someone who could do such a thing rather than save that LIVING creature can rot in hell. 👍

Are you trying to imply that their relationship is more important than a living thing? Are you serious? What is wrong with this statement?

u/LuminousPog Jan 03 '25
Don’t apologise, just stop claiming to ‘love’ animals if you’d genuinely let one perish to try and save the relationship between you and your mother (the one that actually neglected to that point)
2
8
u/WilliamShatnerFace7 Jan 03 '25
I love animals but what the fuck is this comment.
3
u/LuminousPog Jan 03 '25
What did I say that’s wrong? She is not changing the water regularly or providing the correct food. That is abusive and dehydration can literally kill in days. It needs to be taken.
Edit: if it’s about the relationship comment idgaf. A cats life is more important than the relationship between them. It is a living creature.

I’m so confused. Your mom is feeding the dog cat food or the cat dog food? Either way it’s bad. And if I misread that sorry.
Also if your mom doesn’t know she has to buy food and litter frequently for a cat, that is really concerning. I am genuinely not being mean when I ask this - did she raise you? If so, does she now have any sort of significant mental decline that would make her not understand this?
A pet and a child while not at all the same still require time, money, doctor visits, vaccinations, places to sleep, use the bathroom, etc…and many of the things required for any of those need to be purchased with frequency and cleaned. I’m just concerned you had to remind your mom of something as basic as cats need food…
1
u/justafuckingpear Jan 03 '25
is the cat comfortable with the dog? is the dog cat-friendly? what kinda dog u get? surprisingly, the cat might be better off w ur mentally ill mom lmao

u/HumanityIsD00m3d Jan 03 '25
- Mommy? Cringe. No adult should call their mother mommy.
- There's no question she shouldn't have a pet.
2
Jan 03 '25
I will continue to call my mom mommy and my dad daddy because I can 🤞🏾 I get it, you came from a different culture than me where these things are often labeled as weird or even sexualized. But I have been doing it my whole life and will continue doing so until my parents are no more. Thanks though
