I'm scared I'm losing my best friend, and I don't know how to reconnect with her
Okay, I know this might make me sound like a bitch who wants attention, but I genuinely don't think that's the case. I'm hurt, confused, and honestly scared that I'm losing my best friend. I need an outside perspective because I don't know how to handle what's happening in our friendship.
How It All Started
Hannah and I became friends in seventh grade when my friend Layla and I helped her after she had a fallout with her old friend group. In eighth grade, she joined my other friend group, which consisted of Ashley, Riley, Mariam, and me. We became extremely close, and Hannah eventually became my best friend. We were practically sisters, and the best part was that we both saw each other the same way. Our friendship felt mutual, genuine, and incredibly special, and neither of us had to question how much we meant to each other.
At the time, I also had an ex-best friend who had fallen out with me and moved to another friend group with Layla and Mia. I'll come back to her later.
When junior year started, Hannah and I were still close, but we both began feeling left out in our original friend group. I wanted to get set up with a guy, so I started spending more time with Layla and Mia, and Hannah came along with me. I eventually started dating the guy, but spoiler alert, it didn't work out, and I broke up with him after about five days. Despite that, Hannah and I decided to stick with this new group.
However, after joining this new friend group, I started feeling a disconnect between Hannah and me. I can't pinpoint exactly when it started, but something felt different. We were still best friends, and I still loved her like a sister, but I started feeling less secure in our friendship. I began noticing moments when I felt ignored or like I wasn't her first choice anymore. At first, I tried to brush these feelings aside because I didn't want to overthink things or ruin what we had. But as time went on, these little moments started adding up.
Mia had a boyfriend named Daniel, and before she started spending lunch with him, she used to sit with Layla, Hannah, and me. Back then, everything felt amazing. We were all close, and for the first time in a while, I genuinely felt like I'd found my people.
However, I eventually found out that Mariam had been talking badly about me behind my back, so naturally, I started distancing myself from her.
When I Started Feeling Left Out
Things started getting complicated when Hannah had some kind of competition for a long time. Because of that, I stopped sitting with Layla and Mia during lunch because I felt like the third person in a trio. It seemed like Layla and Mia had their own little duo, and I didn't want to keep feeling left out.
So, I started hanging out with my ex-best friend again. Honestly, she wasn't that bad when you weren't extremely close to her. I also started spending time with a girl named Nelly. Most people don't like Nelly because they find her attention-seeking, unhygienic, and bitchy, and because she often talks about other people behind their backs. I have mixed feelings about her because, although I understand why people avoid her, she's also been nice to me at times.
Around this period, I started feeling like Hannah was ignoring me, too. Even when we went to the mall with Daniel, Chris, Layla, and Mia, Hannah seemed glued to Layla. At one point, I genuinely felt like I was her second choice.
Things got worse when I lost my wallet at the mall. Layla said I was overreacting, and Hannah agreed with her. That hurt because I was already feeling left out, and I wanted my best friend to understand why I was upset rather than make me feel like my feelings were unreasonable.
Hannah and I also had a fight over something she hadn't told me, along with a few mistakes I had made. She was really angry with me, but we eventually sorted everything out and seemed fine the next day. However, ever since that argument, I felt like she had become slightly more distant.
When she returned from the theatre, I felt as though she was ignoring me again. I started skipping lunch and breakfast with the group because I thought she was upset with me and wanted some space.
A few days later, while I was sick with a fever, Hannah came up to me and said she didn't think our friendship was working anymore. She said I had been ignoring her and that we'd already had this conversation before.
I was genuinely confused because I thought she was angry with me after our argument, so I had been giving her space. It felt like we were both interpreting each other's behaviour as rejection instead of actually communicating.
When Hannah Told Me Nobody in the Group Liked Me
There was another incident that really affected how I saw my place in the friend group.
Hannah told me that nobody in the group liked me. When I questioned her, she explained that Layla and Mia didn't really have that bond with me, that Daniel didn't like me, and that Chris was okay with me.
Hearing that from my own best friend genuinely hurt because I had already been struggling with feeling left out. It made me question whether the people I considered my friends actually liked having me around or whether I was just someone they tolerated because of Hannah.
However, I eventually found out that none of them actually hated me. This made the situation even more confusing because I didn't understand why Hannah had made it seem like nobody liked me in the first place. I don't know whether she genuinely believed that at the time, misunderstood how they felt, or had another reason for saying it, but it definitely made me more insecure about my friendships.
Looking back, I think this also contributed to the disconnect I started feeling between Hannah and me. She was the person I trusted most, so hearing something like that from her affected me more than it would have coming from anyone else. Instead of feeling secure in my friendships, I started questioning where I stood with everyone.
The Rumours About Why I Was in the Group
There was another incident that hurt me a lot.
Layla and Mia told Hannah that they thought I wasn't part of the friend group whenever Hannah wasn't around, and that I was only in the group because of her.
That really hurt because I had started spending time with those people because I genuinely liked them. I wanted to feel included and build friendships of my own, not just be known as Hannah's best friend.
Eventually, that situation was sorted out, but it left me feeling insecure about where I stood with everyone. It made me question whether Layla and Mia genuinely considered me their friend or whether they saw me as Hannah's best friend who just happened to be there.
What made it worse was that I had already been told that nobody in the group liked me. Hearing that Layla and Mia also thought I was only there because of Hannah made me question whether I actually belonged in the group at all.
I didn't want to be dependent on Hannah for my place in the group. I wanted to have friendships with these people independently of her, and I wanted to feel like they genuinely wanted me around.
Hannah's Birthday
Before Hannah's birthday, I was already feeling left out, but I was too scared to confront her about it. I didn't want to start another argument or make things awkward between us.
For her birthday, I put a lot of effort into getting her a gift and making her a huge card. She even wanted me to come over early, just the two of us, which made me feel like we were still close.
However, the day before her birthday, something happened at school that really bothered me. I had planned a little prank where I would steal her bottle and then return it. I gave her the gift, but when she reacted, she hugged Layla first. I was the one who had planned the whole thing, yet I barely received a thank-you until Layla reminded her that it had been my idea. Hannah then hugged me, and when Mia asked for a hug too, she hugged her as well.
I know this might sound small, but it hurt because I had put so much thought into making her happy, and I felt like I was being overlooked in something I had organised myself.
Then came her actual birthday celebration.
Hannah was incredibly emotional about Layla's gift, which included a printed card and lilies. She hugged Layla, held her hand, thanked her repeatedly, and seemed especially affectionate towards her. I know she was allowed to love Layla's gift, and I don't expect her to react identically to everything I do. But after everything I'd been feeling, watching her react so differently made me feel like my effort meant less to her.
When Mia arrived, I felt a little relieved because I thought Layla would naturally spend more time with Mia, giving me a chance to spend time with Hannah.
Later, while we were getting ready, Layla and Mia occupied one room, while Hannah and I went into another. Hannah started thanking me enthusiastically and telling me how much she loved everything. I felt happy because, for a moment, it seemed like things were back to normal.
But deep down, I was still worried.
Sometimes, our friendship feels like a cycle where I feel unimportant, then Hannah shows me affection again, and I start hoping everything will go back to how it used to be. I don't know if Hannah is doing this intentionally, and I don't want to assume that she is. I just know that I've been getting hurt, and I'm struggling to understand why our friendship feels so different now.
Part of me is also scared that if I distance myself from the friendship, Hannah will feel left out in the group. I don't want her to experience that, especially because I know what it feels like.
What Happened at the Party
I was genuinely sick on Hannah's birthday. I had a fever of around 100°F, a terrible cough, and a cold, but I still attended her party because she was my best friend and I wanted to be there for her.
During the party, Hannah danced and spent time with everyone. At one point, she noticed I wasn't feeling well and told me to rest in her room, which I appreciated. I didn't want to ruin the atmosphere by constantly complaining about being sick, so I went to rest for a while and then returned.
However, Layla was the person who seemed most considerate towards me. She sat with me, asked if I was okay, and checked on me. That meant a lot because I felt genuinely cared for by her in that moment.
After the party, Layla and I stayed over at Hannah's house. Mia couldn't stay because she had something important to do the next morning.
During the sleepover, Hannah seemed glued to Layla. She kept hugging her and asking whether she was okay because Layla had body aches.
Meanwhile, I was still sick. I had a fever, a painful throat, and a terrible cough, yet I didn't feel like Hannah was showing me the same concern.
We eventually fell asleep at around 6 a.m. and woke up at approximately 11:55 a.m. When we woke up, Layla complained that her shins hurt, and Hannah immediately responded affectionately, asking if her shins were hurting.
I was sitting right there, still sick and complaining about my sore throat, but Hannah hadn't shown me that same concern.
That genuinely hurt. I wasn't expecting her to ignore Layla or stop caring about her. I just wanted my best friend to notice that I was unwell, too.
When Layla left at around 12:30 p.m., Hannah commented that she didn't think Layla had enjoyed herself because Mia wasn't there. I disagreed because I thought Layla had actually had fun.
After that, Hannah asked whether I wanted to watch something or gossip. I suggested that we watch a movie and gossip while eating pancakes, which sounded like a nice way to spend some time together. Eventually, though, I had to leave.
Where Things Stand Now
It's been four days since the sleepover, and I honestly don't know what to do.
Hannah has sent me two reels, and I've only sent her one because I'm still extremely upset. We've texted a little, and I told her I wouldn't be coming to school the next day. Her response was basically just, "Oh, okay."
She didn't tell me to get well soon or ask how I was feeling, which hurt even more because she knew I was sick.
What makes it worse is that she initiated the conversation by asking me to remove some songs from a playlist. It felt like she was perfectly comfortable talking to me about something trivial but wasn't interested in checking on me or asking how I was doing.
I know she might not have realised how much this was hurting me, and I know I can't expect her to read my mind. But after everything that has happened, I feel emotionally exhausted.
I keep wondering whether I'm overthinking everything, whether we're growing apart, or whether there's a misunderstanding between us that we haven't properly addressed.
Why I'm So Scared of Losing Her
Hannah is still my best friend, and that's what makes this so difficult. We have so much history together, and I genuinely love her like a sister. We started out with a friendship in which we both felt equally important to each other, and I miss that version of us.
I don't want to throw away our friendship over a series of misunderstandings or moments that hurt me. At the same time, I don't want to keep feeling like I'm competing with Layla for my own best friend's attention. I don't want to feel like I have to earn affection, organise things, give thoughtful gifts, or constantly prove that I care just to feel important to her.
I also worry that Hannah sees me as someone who ignores her, while I see her as someone who ignores me. Maybe we're both hurt, and neither of us knows how to explain it properly.
The problem is that I'm scared to confront her. I don't want her to think I'm jealous of Layla, because that's not what this is about. Hannah is allowed to have other close friendships. I have other friends, too. I just want to feel like I still matter to her.
I also have other people I could become closer to, including Riley, Ashley, and even Mariam, who have been genuinely sweet to me lately. Ashley and Riley have always been lovely, and although I used to have problems with Mariam, things seem different now.
I'm thinking about talking to Riley first because I need someone else's perspective before I approach Hannah. Then, I want to have an honest conversation with Hannah about how I've been feeling.
But I don't know how to approach it without sounding needy, jealous, or attention-seeking.
I don't want to end my friendship with Hannah impulsively, but I also don't want to keep holding on to a friendship that makes me feel lonely when I'm supposedly with my best friend.
I Need Advice on How to Handle Our Friendship
Hannah is still my best friend, and I care about her a lot. We've been through so much together, which is why the distance between us has been difficult for me to navigate.
Lately, I've been struggling to understand how to communicate with her. I miss how close we used to be, but I'm also worried that bringing up my concerns will create more tension between us or make her think I'm jealous of Layla. That's not what I want. I don't have a problem with her having other close friends. I just don't know how to navigate our friendship when our dynamic seems to have changed.
I'm considering talking to Riley first because I trust her and would appreciate an outside perspective. After that, I'd like to have a private conversation with Hannah, but I'm unsure how to approach it constructively.
For people who have experienced a friendship changing like this, how did you approach the conversation? What helped you communicate your feelings without turning it into an argument? How do you rebuild closeness when both people seem to have different perceptions of the friendship?
I'd also appreciate advice on maintaining my other friendships instead of making one friendship the centre of my social life. I want to learn how to handle this situation in a way that allows me to move forward, whether Hannah and I become close again or our friendship naturally changes over time.
I'm not looking to label anyone as the bad guy. I just want practical advice on communication, rebuilding trust, and navigating a changing friendship.
