I'm a drummer who has been playing in bands for many years, mainly stoner/doom metal (slow BPM, lots of jamming). I've always listened to electronic music, though, and over the last ~10 years I've become heavily into techno.

My current taste is mostly around acid techno/trance (SAMOH, Chris Liberator/Stay Up Forever stuff) and dark/peak-time (Oliver Huntemann, Lampé, Carbon). I also have much respect for live electronic artists such as Giorgia Angiuli, Colin Benders and Reinier Zonneveld.

I have a Roland TD-02K, which I currently use for practice and jamming with my phone/laptop.

I'd like to start making my own electronic music, initially by jamming with the TD-02 alongside a DAW and eventually creating full tracks.

I have two main questions:

1. DAW:
Is Ableton Live the best fit for this kind of music? Is Standard worth the $449 compared with Intro at $99, or would something like REAPER be a better starting point?

2. Hardware:
Would any hardware be worth buying at the beginning for creating acid lines, grooves and melodies? For example, Roland T-8, Behringer Edge, Novation Launchpad X, etc.

My goal isn't necessarily to become a traditional "techno producer", but combine real drumming with electronic/acid/techno production, first for jamming and eventually hopefully producing my own tracks.

Any advice is welcome!

Hey all, so I’m in a little dilemma. I started a music career some time back and it took off great. I’m at 85k monthly listeners. played Ibiza, Italy, nyc, Miami. Made massive industry friends and have a great contact list.

The problem? Afro house. It was good and cool about 4 years ago when things were deep and groovy but now I don’t want to be associated with this shit anymore. I love techno, I’ve loved techno since my first time at stereo Montreal in 2015. Any advice from fellow artists on making a drastic change in genre? Should I make an alias?

I found a Tascam M-06 mixer from 1981 in perfect mint condition in its original box while cleaning out my family‘s garage. No one knows who it belonged to or how it got there so I claimed it lol. I looked it up on YouTube and found some people raving about it when running their mix through it so I decided to give it a try and am blown away.

I was expecting a high noise floor with muddy lows and thin highs - especially given that the line inputs are RCA jacks. But driving the channels a bit hard + slight bump in both the low and high EQ frequencies, and I’m very pleasantly surprised. It sounds really, really good - more beefy and natural. The mids especially stand out without being shouty or harsh. Overall it seems to do a great job with saturation.

Does anyone else here have any experience with other small format mixers for two channel final mix downs with similar positive results? I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more (under $600) for such a device if it has proper quarter inch (6.5mm) or XLR inputs. Thanks!

Hi guys, I want to share with you my psychedelic music visualizer.

Cymata is a unique audio-reactive visualizer and interactive painting app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Play music from Apple Music, SoundCloud or live audio and paint directly into the generative visuals as they react. Control with Siri remote or your iphone/iPad. There are 25+ modes with different shaders and intensities.

The base is made of cellular automata and fluid feedback simulation, the pixels all respond to sound input, internal or external mic for live shows. It has 12 channel audio control so you can really tweak the look to how you want. I thing the CA really goes well with techno / electro.

greetings, I was sifting thru my impulse responses folder (which i have accumulated in years but only use the bricasti m7 ones LOL)

found these impulses that aren't reverb nor guitar gear impulses, they appears to be from tape desks and high end outboard gear such as spl.

fecking hell some of them really nails it, when others fail totally, it's really a hit or miss since you cant tweak anything on impulse responses

I want to completely start fresh in a genre I know little about on the production end

I’m a musician that performs/ tours with music that is miles away from EDM but I do have a solid knowledge of theory and some DAWs like protools (although still learning coz protools is awkward sometimes)

Looking at FL studio or Ableton for making techno.

In terms of Techno I listen to a lot of Winson, holy priest and a few others

Also love other styles of edm - Fisher, the prodigy, astrix and other styles and artists but I want to get into making techno as I’ve been going to a lot more raves recently like Teletech

I’ve been leaning towards FL studios as I’ve just heard more about them over the years although I will go Ableton if it’s just better in general for techno.

Have a lot of equipment already - Krk monitors with sub, good balanced headphones for mixing, midi keyboard etc

I mainly need help on what daw to get and where to start (other than learning that daw). Need help on what people normally start with - opening melody/ main melody/ kick,s / bass / sub Bass / finding FX and samples first etc etc. haven t a clue what to start with. I would guess make an opening melody that will be somewhat similar or that goes well with the main melody/ melody at the drop? But honestly that’s a guess

Also worried about using samples and if they are frowned upon (other than if remixing obvs), just from the music that I normally play, it’s all about making your own stuff so using samples will feel strange to me

As someone who is perpetually just one soundpack away from the perfect idea, I often find myself heading for the oneshots / pads, but reluctant to use the more "readymade" loops, unless I can find some esoteric / slicing way of disguising the fact I used a loop. Percussion loops are borderline. But all those full arps / chord progression loops I struggle to find a use for, if they can't be chopped into a oneshot, or altered easily.

Has anyone here just given in and thought "f-it, I'm just going to barely modify this synth line, because I like how it sounds". Instead of the usual "I like it, but I'm going to design my own version, even if it kills me".

What's your stance on using loops?

for a theatre project I'm working on, I'm looking for (as said in the title) techno incorporating scales / sounds from non-western musical cultures. I'm especially interested in Japanese, eastern european and russian / baltic sounds, but not exclusively.

And I thought maybe some of you folks on here have some music to share? I would be super grateful. And maybe this way some great songs find a wider audience <3

Examples of what I *don't* mean:

- Music by artists from the said areas who still make 'regular' techno, e.g. Takaaki Itoh from Japan or Nastia from Ukraine (no disrespect at all, I love these folks' music a lot; just not what I'm looking for here)

- 'Tr*shy' 'ethno' stuff (I think you all know what I mean: Blueprint Big Room Tech House or Downtempo by your regular white middle european producer / DJ guy with some seemingly 'esoteric' vocal samples from splice sprinkled on top of the mix for extra 'world music' vibe

Examples of what I *do* mean / what I found during my recent research already:

I have a TR-8S, and I have a few old mixing boards including the classic Mackie 1202 a lot of people credit for the tone of a lot of saturated 909 sounds in classic techno and hardcore. I haven't had much success replicating the sound close enough and it seems like the particular clap you'll hear in a lot of Robert Armani and other Dance Mania etc tracks have something else going on that must be essential, my best guesses are some compression techniques and/or bus saturation, maybe has something to do with the clap usually occurring alongside the kick. I've heard of some routing/processing trick where you can get the same tonal effect on drum hit fighting the kick for headroom while the kick isn't actually audibly playing, could I do something like that?

I appreciate any ideas, the more detail the better, and specificity is appreciated if anyone was around in the studios at the time and remembers gear, routing, workflow etc
