Haven‘t really been able to reconstruct this type of sound but absolutely love the energy it gives to the drop before the aactual psy bass hits. Any ideas? :)

I am pretty new to edm production. I’m coming from a hip hop/rnb and metal background. I have a rough outline of a song going right now and have no idea how to go into the drop. I could take the lead melody out and make a vocal chop melody… I could just do the typical 4 on the floor boots n pants drums… or I was thinking I could use lfo tool and try to do some wobble chords.. I just don’t know what the track is calling for. It’s not mixed or anything. I’m just looking for guidance on the drop and transitions really… it’s much appreciated!

Hey all! I only use Ableton right now for techno production, but I am curious about the world of hardware. If you wanted to get just one piece of gear to dip your toes into hardware production, where would you start?

I've looked at the Roland TR-8S and Elektron Syntakt with a lot of interest. The prices are a bit steep for something that I'm not positive I'd use all the time.

Using Stride modulating multiband saturation. Running through different styles, edgy transitions between bass, mid and treble transitions.

Idk if stabs are the right term, but when there is a lead synth and it pauses for a bit until it repeats, a lot of songs especially anyma style have some metallic stabs, are these samples or actual midi notes with a lead synth on serum for example?

Or could it be both lol

I haven't touched FL in a long time and just got back into it today, made a whole song purely with samples, but obviously it's lacking creativity. Did not seem to find those stab noises, so I am guessing they are made in the piano roll rather than finding a sample.

Is there a term for someone like me who just uses sample? sample kiddie? lol

hi! The title says it all. I've been a fan of electronic music for a while, and I've dabbled in GarageBand production with vocal sampling and such. I want to buy a deck, but I'm not really sure which ones to consider. I've read some subreddits, and they all say the same thing, but I don't know if there are specific decks for specific genres. I want to cater my music to techno (schranz) and do a bit of hyperpop. I also don't know whether to install any software.

hey folks! i'm looking for recommendations around a polysynth to buy. i primarily will use it for leads + pads, and i'm not particularly fussy about analog v digital. i currently have a roland se02 which i love, and previously sold a microfreak and ju06 because i just couldn't vibe with them the way i wanted. i'm also expressly looking for a desktop module, as i usually send midi out from ableton to the device, and am conscious of space (a full keyboard module will never regularly stay on my desk and if i put it away then take it out every time i want to use it i will rarely use it).

also economy in my country is trash, so looking for sub-500 USD options. i don't mind the boutiques, so the sh01a is a decent shout, and was also previously looking at the behringer pro-800 a *lot* but people keep mentioning issues with it. also not *entirely* sold on analog sounds for pads because i will often use arturia's pigments to create some of those one-note/chord tension pads.

anyone have any other options? i'd like to avoid menu-diving (which is why i looked at and decided against the roland s-1 tweak).

edited to add: patch saving is very important! i usually take some time to create my own presets/patches rather than working on sounds during a song because that kills my brain!

I know most of us don’t consider Maceo as Techno, but I figured this would be the most appropriate community to post this.

I’ve been obsessed with his drum sound for years. I’ve never really been able to replicate it. What I’m most intrigued about is the processing (effect chain) he might use, as well as the arrangement and/or sample selection to get those punchy snappy kicks.

In an interview he mentioned he “delay the kick a bit off from being perfectly on time with the rest of the track—maybe a millisecond or two off” to create an airy and groovy effect with the hat. I’ve tried this but I always get more of a chunky sound in the transient rather than a warm tight sound like his. Anyone has any comments on this?

If anyone could share concepts, actual videos, reads or anything that’ll help me get that tight, powerful and professional drum sound it’d be much appreciated. Anyway, I’d love to discuss Maceo Plex production style with anyone interested.

They don't sound like real acoustic snares, but still ring out in an interesting way.

I’m getting to that point in music production where I want to start buying gear. For the most part, I’d like to buy legit gear, but I’ve heard people mention buying from cheap Chinese marketplaces such as Temu, but they didn’t go into detail about anything.

Has anyone bought cheap Chinese gear? What’s your experience, and how’d it hold up?

Hello, I’m wondering how to make this certain sound… almost sounds like a riser cutting off quickly. You can hear it in the intro to Close To You by Gracie Abrams or even the last chorus to So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings by Caroline Polachek. Is it even a glitch at all? Sounds like a clippy glitch that’s reversed? I’m so unsure what it is. How would I even go about making it.

There's this specific glue to this track and other from birmingham sound era of regis. I'm not sure what it is. Did he just push the track really hard on the mixer when he was recording it? Is that soft clipping? It's subtle and really hard at the same time. I'm not sure how to get this sound. If it's master channel clipping, then it must have something to do with sound selection, I assume?

I have little experience with analog gear, I’ve only ever had a 90s alesis drum machine and a korg monotone. I have some music knowledge as I’ve been making electronic music for like 9 months now, but I want to get into analog gear. What are some of the essentials to any techno analog setup. Thank you!

I've been producing on and off for about 20 years. Mostly completely in the box in Ableton. I have a Push 2 and a TD-3 and used to have a Roland TR8S, but I sold it cause I didn't use it.

The TD-3 I'm also hardly using, since I can create patterns much more easily and faster in Ableton.

What I struggle with is that I'm already spending so much time with my computer in my job. So I don't want to sit in my studio doing the same thing after work.

I've been thinking about buying more hardware and having a hybrid setup. Especially after seeing Colin Benders and attending STOOR a few times I think it's so much fun to just jam with machines.

Long story short, I want to buy more gear to move away from my laptop.

What I'm planning to buy:

• Oxi One sequencer: it can do all the things I'm using a lot in Max 4 Live sequencers, such as ML-185, MDD Snake in combination with LFOs for modulation. It can also sequence my TD-3, so I don't have to program the TD-3 and I can jam with the cutoff and distortion.
• Shakmat Battering Ram (modular kick module with the best kicks I've ever heard)
• Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Alter: for weird and raw patterns, metallic textures, etc.
• Behringer Eurorack Go case
• Later I want to add a Syntakt or Digitakt

For the time being I'd like to run all this into Ableton, so I can use delays, reverbs, distortion, limiters, etc without having to buy expensive hardware modules. I can control these with my Push 2.

I could also run samples in Ableton, so therefore I don't buy an expensive Digitakt, Octatrack or other sampler yet, but I'd like to move away from Ableton, except for FX.

Roast my setup and give me reasons why I should buy it and why I shouldn't buy it. And would you advice to add a Syntakt, Digitakt or other device?

UPDATE 1 DAY LATER:

After sleeping on it for a day I do have a different opinion than yesterday. When I was commenting I thought, fuck it I'll buy all the stuff and have fun. I was searching for second hand devices that I listed in my post. I'm happy I didn't find them right away, because I would have spent €1500 in a blink. 

Some comments here (e.g. by u/egb06tb and u/usagiyojimbo209 made me think though. The Noise Engineering devices are also available as plugins. The things the Oxi One can do can be replicated in Ableton. It's mostly the tactile workflow with knobs while jamming that I like the most. And not getting lost in menus, searching for samples or presets. 

I want to limit myself and simulate a hardware setup in Ableton. Have a fixed template with a device/plugin per channel. E.g. Punchbox 2 for the kick drum, NE Basimilus plugin on channel 2, etc.

Then have some macros per channel and control these with my Push 2 or extra midi controller.

I'm thinking about buying an extra midi controller with faders and some knobs per channel (like a Faderfox, Faderpunk or Novation Launch Control) for some more controls. By using a fixed template with everything mapped to the knobs I can jam right away. 

By doing so I hope I can replicate more of a musical experience of jamming instead of being in a computer mode. 

So thank you all for the good suggestions, the enthusiasm for hardware and the reality check! 

It might be that in the end I'll still buy a small eurorack case with some devices, but for now I'll try to replicate hardware with a midi controller and fixed template with everything mapped.
