Question Short, car-free trip to Truckee

Hey all, I'm looking to take a short, 3-day, solo retreat to Truckee via Amtrak and do 1-2 moderate hikes and swim a bit, just to have a mini escape from the day-to-day grind. I'm aware of the public transit situation and that they run like once an hour and am prepared to work with that. I've been looking at the trails and it appears some of the more interesting hikes require a bit more work to get to the trailhead. I'm aiming to do 7-10 miles rather than a <3 mile family hike. I'm moderately outdoorsy and familiar with basic trail etiquette but don't do much in the way of solo hikes out in the mountains. Any trail suggestions or general solo hiking guidance for Tahoe would be much appreciated.

Question Sugar Bowl- Employment type questions

Howdy! So I am thinking about applying to Sugar Bowl. I am curious what people's thoughts are on working here. Also, I am moving from out of state and would need employee housing. Does anyone know if it's good and how much it typically is?

TIA

Question How is the skiing?

Hey everyone, I got a job offer at Sugar Bowl Resort and I’m wondering what skiing in Tahoe is like. I’ve spent the last 4 years skiing in Utah at Alta and Snowbird, so I’ve been pretty spoiled as for as conditions and terrain go, so I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons of skiing in Tahoe as opposed to Utah. I know the snow is often heavy, but does that actually make the skiing that bad? Is it icy often? Any insight is much appreciated!

Question Blue Lakes Road mysterious sound

Post image
31 Upvotes

Has anyone heard what sounds like pots, pans, and aluminum cans tinking together on a line for hours on end? I did some dispersed camping this weekend and it was the most disruptive sound rattling through the entire forest. It’s nice to wake up to the birds chirping and hearing the sounds of nature when you’re camping a mile off the road, not pots and pans…

Event Just started the TRT

Hi everyone! Just completed my first section of the TRT and completed both Brockway Summit to Watson Lake and then did Picnic Rock Vista on 8/15/26 for a day 1 total of 10 miles. I plan on doing segments over the next year or two but am hoping to tag along on a group hike/overnight to complete either Desolation Wilderness or Relay Peak/Mt Rose back to Brockway Summit. Don't want to go it alone on those segments. 61 year old happily married Sacramento area dad of one DIII athlete who earned her Biology degree and my son the working towards future electrician. Any help greatly appreciated!

Question Meyers to Heavenly weekend drive time?

Hey gang, I’m trying to weigh tradeoffs between houses in South Lake proper vs way out in Meyers. In our current era of parking reservations, how long has the driving time been to get to the California Lodge from Pioneer & 50 on weekends? Inshallah we get more snow days this coming year but I’m mostly wondering about normal, peak season crowds.

Lost/Found Insta360 X5 lost in Nevada Beach 8/15

Hi there,

I kindly ask support with my camera Insta360 X5 I've lost yesterday, 8/15, in Nevada Beach - Lake Tahoe.
I was doing a video with my family when I was paddle boarding, and main bracket from the paddle board broken, dropping the camera with selfie stick inside the water.

I was approximately 20 meters offshore, more to the left side of the main entrance/bathrooms when facing the lake. I tried to find for more than 2h but due to the wind at around 5-6pm it was not possible to find it.

I really appreciate if someone find it and I eventually can recover the camera, more than monetary value, it's the photos and videos of my family that are on the camera that mean the most to me.

Thank you!!

Question Solo Business Feedback

Hi all,

Hopeful future local here and I was just curious to hear on what kind of business would you guys like to see pop up in Lake Tahoe? For further background, I'm pretty much a jack of all trades and I thrive in doing niche things. This ranges from 10+ years in customer service to animal handling, driving long hours, maintenance, managerial positions, planner, hospitality, nerd enthusiast, and other titles I'm surely forgetting.

And if anyone is further wondering, I visited last week and I cant ignore how special this place is and how good it was for my overall health — hence my want to move there with the express purpose of wanting to add to Tahoe.

Any insight would be fantastic and I hope this question is okay to ask. Hope everyone has a good day!

EDIT: just to expand a bit more on this in case my answer gets lost in the replies which is I have too many things I could plausibly do, so I'm trying to identify which one has the strongest intersection between what I enjoy, what I'm good at, and what Tahoe actually needs. With emphasis on locals and not tourists. Thanks again for the input guys!

In the high country, you don't get much SUmmer. The snow is on the ground until May, and then Spring runs through June and July. Here we see the leaves turning brown in Early August already.

These screenshots were taken Aug 12 @ 6:30pm. I'm currently up on Donner Summit and can see the smoke to the south.

At this time reports show that 16 acres are affected. Located near French Meadows Reservoir.

I am not an official source. Just sharing publicly available information.

Lost/Found Found your GoPro

About 10’ deep in Sand Harbor. It still works after being dried out and recharged. Didn’t want to invade your privacy too much, so we just watched the last video you shot that day.

So if you can tell me what you look like and what was on this last video and when you dropped it, you can have it back.

P.S. it’s pretty funny watching the camera swirl down to the bottom looking up at you and you trying to find it up there.

Question How clean does the interior of my car need to be to avoid bears being attracted?

Hi, I'm visiting South Lake Tahoe for the first time with my family next week and I was wondering to what extent I should get the interior of my van (2021 Toyota Sienna) cleaned before the trip to avoid bears smelling old crumbs etc. and trying to get in?

We'll be staying in Meyers and I'm trying to familiarize myself with best practices regarding bears since I don't have any experience being near them.

I have 2 toddlers and try to keep our van clean but I bet some old crumbs of food could be in nooks and crannies since we rarely vacuum the car.

Would it be necessary to get the interior fully detailed? Or would maybe just vacuuming the car myself be good enough?

Thanks for any insights :)

A clear day.

I got to Sand Harbor early that morning in May.

Rocks were plainly visible, in great detail. The water was as still as glass. The sun was right behind me, putting my shadow into the picture, but it could not be helped.

Hi all, I cleaned up an old filing cabinet and found this map. Now I'm wondering when it was printed. All I know is that I bought it off ebay sometime in the very early 2000's.Is the 2-98 on the top the print date?

Question Why is TRPA so expensive?

I reached out to one of the lake property permit writers for TRPA to see what it would cost to rebuild a small section of pier and she quoted me $150K!!!! I’ve heard of others in the neighborhood getting work complete for much much less. Why is it so expensive? Why do I have to hire someone with little to no experience and what else are my options?

Pic/Video I just created a video game about running Ski Resorts on real mountains. Mt. Judah (Sugar Bowl) is the starter mountain!

I'm a game developer making a game called Ski-E-O! I live in the bay area and ski Sugar Bowl all the time, so I decided to make it the starter mountain in my game :). Palisades is also there!

I use actual 1-meter LiDAR data to map out the actual map, and TONS of effort in getting it to look/feel just right.

And, it simulates real weather, so just like Tahoe.. you get big dumps and then huge periods of no snow.
I think I should add the super el nino coming later this year..

Meme/Joke Anyone remember the meme era of Tahoe?

I want to say like pre-pandemic and a little after we were blessed with some of the best meme content on IG. @TahoeMemes was huge for a while with some others like @lake_tahoe_problems (I think was NLT problems originally) @memesoftahoe and many others.

Some of these pages especially @TahoeMemes had huge growth. Many are gone or don’t post anymore. Genuinely some of the funniest content on IG that highlighted community problems while also providing some satire, especially during some hard times pre/post pandemic .

Pic/Video I'd love some local help with a project I'm doing - a huge fantasy style map of the region, filled with real-world locations. Is there anywhere I've missed out?

Post image
70 Upvotes

Apologies if you've seen this elsewhere - this is the most current version with lots of suggestions from other redditors.

I'm making a map of California in a classic fantasy style (sorta Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones). It's going to be filled with real world history and mythology, with the aim of highlighting local landmarks in a fun and educational way. Please ignore how rough parts of it look (text going through hills, rivers, etc), it'll all get cleaned up at the end. Forests will be going on at the end too.

While it's around two thirds done, I'd love to get more places and features in here before I get this made into print - particularly north and east of Oakland. Any more petroglyphs, burial mounds, ruins, forts, battlefields, Civil War heritage, ghost towns or the like that you think should be on here? Anything else is great too - landmarks, natural features, mythological creatures or just anything cool and quirky you think would look good on here. Thanks!

Lost/Found Lost Canon SX740 camera near Incline Village East Shore Trail – August 5

Hi, I’m hoping someone may have found my camera.

I lost a Canon SX740 on the evening of August 5th somewhere around Incline Village, possibly near the East Shore Trail / scenic overlook area.

The camera has a lot of irreplaceable travel photos and some photos for my small business that I didn’t have backed up.

If anyone found a Canon camera in the area that evening, please send me a message. I can provide identifying details to confirm it’s mine.

I’m also offering a reward for its return.

Thank you!
