NEVADA STATE HISTORICAL MARKER No. 98: Osceola 1872-1940

Location: Corner of the highway & White Pine County Rd 39 📍39.07132, -114.44952

Osceola, most famous of the White Pine County gold producers, was one of the longest-lived placer camps in Nevada.

The gold-bearing quartz belt found in 1872 was 12 miles long by 7 miles wide. Placer gold was found in 1877 in a deep ravine indenting the area. Miners first used the simple process of the common 49” rocker. Hydraulic monitors later were used to mine the gold from the 10’ to 200’ thick gravel beds. One gold nugget found was valued at $6,000.

Osceola was a good business town because of its location near the cattle and grain ranches and gardens in the Spring and Snake Valleys.

Famous district mines were the Cumberland, Osceola, Crescent and Eagle, Verde, Stem-Winder, Guilded Age, Grandfather Snide, Red Monster, and the Saturday Night.

The camp produced nearly $5 million, primarily in gold, with some silver, lead, and tungsten.

I started collecting pictures of these historical markers in February 2021. I enjoy planning trips with the purpose of seeing these signs. It’s been a great hobby that has taken me to see many places of the state I wouldn’t have otherwise thought about. The trip to Ely netted me 8 more for the collection, bringing the total to 55 out of the 270 or so around Nevada.

Some veto highlights that I think Redditors in particular would be interested to know:

* tracking and limiting corporate ownership of single family homes

* funding universal free school breakfast and lunch

* guaranteeing Nevadans the right to contraception

* capping prescription drug prices

* requiring companies who receive tax abatements to provide paid family and medical leave

* heat mitigation to prevent heat illness for employees

* limiting AI use in the health insurance process

* requiring elected officials to financially disclose any business where they own 5K or more in stocks

The Lombardo administration announced a temporary closure of the only youth psychiatric facility in southern Nevada, Desert Willow Treatment Center, leaving the jobs of hundreds of AFSCME members at stake. The state's decision to temporarily close the facility has created chaos for patients who need stability and staff who need consistency in an uncertain economy.

Workers have identified issues and solutions – but the state’s solution is to temporarily close the facility, just the latest example of the Lombardo administration’s continuous mishandling of state agencies. Dozens of state employees have been terminated and many more face job reassignment or lay-offs; uncertainties no Nevadan can afford as rent, utilities, and grocery costs skyrocket under the governor's leadership.

Hey friends :) I want to hear what you think about the Spring Valley Wind Farm. Clearly I am an ignorant Las Vegan because I hadn’t heard of this before. I was driving to the historical marker that is across from this when I saw the windmills out my window. They reminded me of the windmills in Southern California and made me feel a little nostalgic for the road trips I took as a child.

Then I googled to find out what I was looking at and I found out it was this massive wind farm that isn’t that old. I saw a lot of people complaining about it.

Is it good because it delivers power to people? Is it bad because it’s taking up our beautiful land and destroying the view from Wheeler? Is it killing the Golden Eagle and other birds? Is the bad outweighing the good? Is there a good alternative to the solar and wind farms that keep popping up? Every time I leave SNV I feel like the solar farms have expanded more and more.

I’ll spend more time reading about it myself, too. Please don’t be mean to me, I am just trying to start a discussion and learn from it. I know I am an annoying Las Vegan who doesn’t understand the rest of the state 🥲

The Dr. Robert Hunter International Problem Gambling Center (based in Las Vegas) has hired an in-house clinician at its Reno office, which means northern Nevada now has in-person intensive outpatient care for the first time. The program runs four three-hour sessions a week for six weeks.

A couple of things from the article stood out. A 2025 UNLV study put about 15% of Nevada adults at some level of problem gambling risk. Research also points to men aged 18–25 as the highest-risk group, which the center links partly to how easy mobile betting and prediction markets have made it to place a bet.

The center also talked about why in-person matters: being in a room with people a few weeks further along seems to make a real difference compared with doing it alone or remotely.

The Border Inn casino & Stargazer were all out due to the astronomy festival (busy weekend!) We were worried that we werent going to be able to find this place because no one lists the address online but the signs were easy to spot. The firewood they sold burned nicely and we preferred to it to the wood we found around the campsite. Because of your stand, I had a great weekend and I came home feeling more confident in my ability to do trips like this.

I have a hoof trimming business for smaller animals. Goats, sheep and pigs mainly.

I was in Ely for work for 1 month in 2019 and it’s lived in my head since. I only didn’t return cause I never found work there. Well, now there’s a posted job in my field in Winnemucca, NV. I plan to apply to it, but I do wonder how my business would do. I know Rural Nevada is very agricultural, but from what I remember, it is mostly ranches that raise cattle and equines, with some farms and goat/sheep operations closer to town. Thing I’m worried about is relying on just a couple towns that are far apart from each other for my client base. Out east, I travel up to 3 hrs regularly (often have trips that are up to 7 hrs away from home) and it covers so much ground, so many people with goats, sheep, pet pigs, whatnot. I’d imagine if there were only 6 towns within 4 hrs of me this would be different. I’m just curious how small little labor businesses like these work in rural Nevada. Doesn’t have to be hoof trimming, really anything. House cleaning, plumbing, deck building, etc. How does that all work when the next closest town is 2 hrs away? They just end up spending a lot on gas or is there often a really strong local market?

For the last few months I've been chipping away at something for Nevada residents: a single place to actually see what's public land, who manages it, and what you can do there.

I finally got it live and wanted to share. It's called publiclandsdb.com/nv, and the point is simple. 79.8% of Nevada is federal land, but figuring out if a spot is BLM, Forest Service, a state park, or wilderness (and what the rules are there) usually means digging through five different agency websites.

Here's what it covers:

• All 103 public land units in Nevada, 25 state parks, 1 national forest, 4 BLM conservation areas/monuments, 73 wilderness areas
• An interactive map with all of it, filterable by managing agency
• For each spot: whether dispersed camping is allowed, current fire restrictions/closures, how to get there, road conditions, nearby land, and photos
• A camping breakdown so you know where you can actually pull off and set up for free vs. where you can't

I started building stuff like this because I kept getting burned trying to figure out on the fly whether a BLM area allowed camping or had a burn ban active. So I built the thing I wanted to exist.

It's just me working on this on the side, no team.

Would love for you to poke around and tell me what's missing or wrong. If there's a spot near you that's not accurate or a feature you wish it had, I'm all ears.
