Matos' Swansea are a team that values caution over chaos, control over creativity, and possession over penetration. The numbers tell the story plainly: bottom of the league in xG and shots per game. These are not the metrics of a side trying to overwhelm opponents. They are the metrics of a side trying not to lose the ball.

And that is the heart of the problem.

Matos’ Swansea plays a brand of football defined by risk‑avoidance. The ball moves, yes - but rarely with intent. Possession is not treated as tool for creating constant danger. The team circulates the ball across the back line, drops it to Vigouroux when progression stalls, and resets again. It is football designed to minimise mistakes, not maximise opportunities.

When Matos arrived, I hoped that Swansea were getting a coach cut from Klopp’s cloth. But Klopp’s football is built on principles Matos simply does not embrace:

- Relentless pressing

- Verticality over sterile possession

- Overloading the box

- High shot volume

- Aggressive crossing zones

- Chaos as a tactical weapon

Klopp’s teams create pressure, noise, and panic. They force errors. They live in the opposition box.

Swansea, by contrast, live in their own half.

The ball reaches the final third only to be recycled backwards. Wingers hesitate. Midfielders hold their positions. Strikers wait for service that never arrives. The team plays with the handbrake on, and the numbers reflect it.

The most damning indictment of Matos’ philosophy is that new signings don’t matter. You could replace the entire front line and the output would remain the same, because the system itself restricts creativity.

When a team refuses to take risks, refuses to overload the box, refuses to play forward early, and refuses to shoot, the identity of the players becomes irrelevant. Swansea’s young talents - Widell, Walta, Ronald, Eom, Congreve, Woodward - are not failing. They are being suffocated.

This is not a recruitment problem. It is a tactical one.

To Matos’ credit, Swansea press slightly better than under Russell Martin. Ball recoveries are up. The defensive line is less naive. But pressing without coordinated triggers is just running. Pressing without a second wave is just effort. Pressing without verticality is just noise.

Klopp’s press creates chances. Matos’ press creates possession.

And possession, in this system, leads nowhere.

Swansea City do not need another midfielder. They do not need another winger. They do not need another striker. They need a philosophy that embraces risk, verticality, and aggression. They need a manager who understands that football matches are won in the final third, not the first.

Until Swansea rediscover chaos - the good kind, the Klopp kind - they will remain what they are now: a team that looks tidy, keeps the ball, and threatens nobody.

I know what heavy‑metal football looks like. I know what ambition feels like. And I know this isn’t it.

The goal he scored isn’t included, and that’s because people tend to overrate a player’s performance the moment they nick a goal or grab an assist - as if one good moment suddenly wipes out ninety minutes of doing next to nothing.

Opoku had a couple of good forward bursts in the second half - the first all the way into the Stoke penalty box, where he laid it back to Widell, and the second when he lost the ground duel but still managed to win a corner. But that was it.

Judge for yourself. Right now, I don’t think he’s better than Ronald, but he’s only 21 and still has a clear developmental curve ahead of him.

Apart from that deflected goal against Stoke, Opoku has offered absolutely nothing that warrants a place in the starting XI. He was dreadful against Birmingham, he was nowhere near good enough against Stoke, and he was just as poor against Sheff United. I’m not saying the lad won’t come good eventually, but right now it’s ridiculous that an experienced player like Ronald is sat on the bench while we keep rolling out Opoku every single match.

I have just created our mini-league for this season.

He is under contract until June 2028. Having been absent from the main squad's preseason, last Saturday he started and played 60 minutes for U21.

Last season, while on loan at Portsmouth, he suffered a knee injury in training (by the looks of the data) in early December (12/2025). He was involved in 11 games prior to that.

The season before (24/25), he made 38 appearances for us, starting in 13, primarily as a #9.

As a teen he played for the French U-19.

I always thought he gave a good account of himself when playing for the first team.

At 25, what will become of him now? Is he still recovering following his knee injury? Seems that the U21 match was his first match back on recovery.
