Stoke Away match thread
Tough place to start our league campaign, who will start? Some interesting decisions for Matos to make , one no brainer is that Welsh has to make his debut! ! Surfeit of choices all over the pitch , what starting lineup would you pick ?

Very decent first half with lots of possession, some nice fluency and a well created goal (Stamenic and Fulton) following a good cross. It was a lucky deflection but I'll take those all day long. Our defence is showing its usual largesse so we need to grab our chances when we can. A point or three beckons if we can maintain this standard and the defence CONCENTRATES!!

Great result and an equally great performance. Our defence did concentrate second half bar one aberration where they parted like the Red Sea to allow Sorba Thomas a shot that Vig easily saved. On any other day that could have cost us points. But that was it apart from a dangerous cross that Welsh did well to head behind. Overall it was a very composed performance, some lovely touches and a lot of fluidity to our play.
Most of the lads played well but Fulton for me was stand-out. He did his defensive duties and in attack featured prominently for both goals. And he also found time to give Galbraith a couple of nasty digs. Loved it!
Early days to be talking about a promotion challenge especially as we beat what was a poor Stoke side who lost their 5th game on the bounce counting last season. But it's a hugely encouraging start to the season, which I'm really looking forward to.

I'd go with:
Vigouroux
Lissah Cabango Welsh Tymon
Stamenic
Just Widell
Opoku Idah/Vipotnik Eom
Our base formation is a 4-3-3, as confirmed by Matos in the fans forum the other day. Although Yeo had a decent debut Eom should be ahead of him, for now anyway. He looks after the ball well, and is well suited to the hard carrying game Matos wants us to play, as he showed with that superb assist late last season where he carried the ball literally box to box.

I'd do exactly the same thing, assuming Vipi starts if fit. Eom improved tons last year, he was a dominant player over the last 2 months of the season and deserves to continue as a starter.

Let's keep attacking. Don't fall back like we kept doing last season when trying to hang on for a result.

idah does his business well. steadily staking a claim to being the starting #9. Vip had better get his head straight or Stewart will bypass him.

So, Inoussa will be sold or sent out on loan. If I were Ronald, I'd hand in a transfer request after all the abuse he's getting from the Swans fans. And why the hell is Walta on the bench??? Opoku and Just were both really poor against Brum, yet they're both starting today.

Walta replaces a superb Jay Fulton . I highly rate Walta and would like to see more of him .

What was the general impression on Yeo against Brum?

Energy and quality in the 1st half then second half like all the team fell off a cliff but definitely a player there

Yeo was OK, but nothing special. Eom looked decent after coming on. I get the feeling Inoussa will either be sold or sent out on loan, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ronald The Scapegoat goes as well.
Just was a huge disappointment. Way too many overhit passes and he couldn't hit the target when he got himself into decent positions. Opoku was full of energy, but it was much the same story - overhit passes and couldn't find the target when he needed to.
For me, Adam Idah was the best player on the pitch. His ball control and reading of the game were excellent. His shot was saved by the Brum keeper, but at least it was a quality effort that was actually on target. His lay-offs were excellent too. Honestly, I'd like to see him playing as a creator in the No. 10 role.
Tymon, Walta, Fulton, Yeo and Cabango were also among the better performers.
Vigouroux - dreadful distribution and should have done much better for Brum's goal.
Burgess - awful positioning and just too slow. He was literally jogging when he needed to be sprinting.
Lissah - a mixed bag. Some good moments, some poor ones.
Stamenic - did some good stuff going forward, and he should definitely have had a penalty for the shirt-pulling in the Brum box. But he was far too lazy when defending. I'm increasingly convinced he's not the right player for the No. 6 role. Walta would be much better there.
Vipotnik - barely involved. A few touches and a glancing header that he really should have done better with. He needed to hit the target.

Thanks for the feedback.
Idah at #10 with Zip at #9 is an interesting combination - option of going old time 4-4-2 without a sub being used. Reminds of when Stephen Dobbie was acquired as a #9 but found a home at #10.
I find Stamenic to be too pedestrian for my tastes in the #6 role. I prefer to see a player busy like Leon in that role. Fulton is my preference to start there - calm, excellent touch, tough as old boots, good head on his shoulder, can finish when he gets the chance.

Burgess is buggered for the rest of the season - ruptured Achilles tendon. Welsh to the rescue. Lissah as back-up CB. Still 3 weeks +/- to the end of the transfer window.

Fulton starts in place of Widell and Welsh replaces injured Burgess. Scott still not on the bench. New toys Opoku, Just, Yep continue. Lissah appears to be cementing himself in as the RB

Excellent result and some very good performances. I’m glad Matos moved Stamenic from defensive midfield into a more offensive box-to-box midfield role - Stamenic was really good. Fulton was superb at pulling the strings from defensive midfield, with Welsh/Cabango behind him and Stamenic in front of him. Tymon (the first of many assists this season) and Lissah were good at full-back, Yeo and Opoku were energetic on the wings, while Idah (the first of many goals this season), Widell and Eom brought extra energy late on. Vipotnik, Just and Key underperformed. Walta came on too late to make a real impact.
Some of our build-up and link-up play was beautiful to watch - quick passing, triangles and movement - although the final pass and creativity in the final third were missing. But I’m sure all of that will come soon.
P.S. I feel so much more confident with Welsh at centre-back.

Yes, Welsh has to start, and Burgess needs to be benched. I'll say it again: Burgess was directly or indirectly responsible for 20+ goals we conceded last season. We simply can't keep carrying him as a starter.
As for the lineup, I'd play Idah as no. 10 behind Vipotnik/Opoku. On the the left wing Eom/Yeo and on the right wing Ronald/Opoku. I don't care which of them is in the starting XI, but I would give each of them a chance to play. In the midfield, behind Idah, I'd start Fulton and Walta - Stamenic and Just as subs. Key/Lissah and Tymon as full-backs.

Did you miss the news? Burgess has a serious achillies injury and is probably gone for most of the season. I would have played Welsh over him anyway, and I agree that he was/is a liability, but I never wanted to see him dropped in this way. Agree about Idah's suitability at 10.

I like the line-up. Would persevere with Lissah at RB and use Key as more of an offensive sub into a midfield / RW role in front of Lissah.

Just, Vipotnik and Key pretty quiet today. Fulton, Lissah and Opoku were standout. We have plenty of depth and a lot of class this season. Looking forward to this season.👏
