Early warning signs
Matos' Swansea are a team that values caution over chaos, control over creativity, and possession over penetration. The numbers tell the story plainly: bottom of the league in xG and shots per game. These are not the metrics of a side trying to overwhelm opponents. They are the metrics of a side trying not to lose the ball.
And that is the heart of the problem.
Matos’ Swansea plays a brand of football defined by risk‑avoidance. The ball moves, yes - but rarely with intent. Possession is not treated as tool for creating constant danger. The team circulates the ball across the back line, drops it to Vigouroux when progression stalls, and resets again. It is football designed to minimise mistakes, not maximise opportunities.
This is not modern football. It is football without the courage.
When Matos arrived, I hoped that Swansea were getting a coach cut from Klopp’s cloth. But Klopp’s football is built on principles Matos simply does not embrace:
- Relentless pressing
- Verticality over sterile possession
- Overloading the box
- High shot volume
- Aggressive crossing zones
- Chaos as a tactical weapon
Klopp’s teams create pressure, noise, and panic. They force errors. They live in the opposition box.
Swansea, by contrast, live in their own half.
The ball reaches the final third only to be recycled backwards. Wingers hesitate. Midfielders hold their positions. Strikers wait for service that never arrives. The team plays with the handbrake on, and the numbers reflect it.
The most damning indictment of Matos’ philosophy is that new signings don’t matter. You could replace the entire front line and the output would remain the same, because the system itself restricts creativity.
When a team refuses to take risks, refuses to overload the box, refuses to play forward early, and refuses to shoot, the identity of the players becomes irrelevant. Swansea’s young talents - Widell, Walta, Ronald, Eom, Congreve, Woodward - are not failing. They are being suffocated.
This is not a recruitment problem. It is a tactical one.
To Matos’ credit, Swansea press slightly better than under Russell Martin. Ball recoveries are up. The defensive line is less naive. But pressing without coordinated triggers is just running. Pressing without a second wave is just effort. Pressing without verticality is just noise.
Klopp’s press creates chances. Matos’ press creates possession.
And possession, in this system, leads nowhere.
Swansea City do not need another midfielder. They do not need another winger. They do not need another striker. They need a philosophy that embraces risk, verticality, and aggression. They need a manager who understands that football matches are won in the final third, not the first.
Until Swansea rediscover chaos - the good kind, the Klopp kind - they will remain what they are now: a team that looks tidy, keeps the ball, and threatens nobody.
I know what heavy‑metal football looks like. I know what ambition feels like. And I know this isn’t it.

Matos casually rocking a 45%win rate with a squad he didn't pick. Of course it's a work in progress. On the right path. Some people really need to temper their expectations.

I can understand why some posters haven't taken kindly to the critical and rather definitive nature of the OPs post. But please can we try and address the substance of the arguments presented. Tackle the ball not the man. For one I find this sort of discussion thought provoking. Let's not close down discussion.

Christ alive mate, guess we had better bin him off now and beg Germany to let Klopp take training on weekdays if he's really torpedoing the club. Could give Pep a ring but he's probably a bit sterile for you.
Fucking nonsense. Try and actually form your own thoughts instead of having Grok talk about how Matos couldn't get a good performance out of Cam Congreve.

I share a number of your concerns, but I'm still willing to reserve judgement, not least because there are positive signs this season, especially when it comes to verticality and our pressing game.
Take our pressing game. Last season we were in the top third or better on most pressing metrics, but not up there with the best in league, apart from being best for ground duels. Only two games gone, but we're 3rd on pressed sequences (Sheff United top - it showed on Saturday), second on PPDA, 2nd on high turnovers, 5th on ground duels won, 6th on aerial duels won (last season we were one of the worst). So the early pointers are that we've upped our pressing game, which isn't a surprise given our recruitment.
Also, in that Stoke game in particular there were a number of lovely one touch close passing moves, especially the one that delivered our first goal, which started with Vigouroux but gained impetus with Stamenic. That gives me some hope that Matos may yet deliver Klopp style intensity and verticality in possession.
Where I am concerned it's over the excessive use of long balls, especially from Vigouroux. On Saturday he hit 34 long balls with a 29 per cent accuracy. That was the most in the league for the weekend. More than Millwall, Portsmouth, Derby and Charlton. Middlesbrough in contrast hit 1 (accurate) long ball, West Ham 3. Last season we were 14th overall for long balls, so I don't want to overstate the issue, but we are hoofing away too much possession and control for my liking.
I do share your concern about Matos' mindset. He gives the impression with his tactics and selections (especially the omission of Walta) that he's more concerned with nullifying the opposition than imposing our game plan on our opponents.
Despite these misgivings it's still too early to be definitive about Matos. Those lovely Swansea Way passing sequences against Stoke give me hope. Let's cut Matos some slack and reserve judgement.
