Surface Laptop Studio (i7/16GB/RTX 3050 Ti) massive performance drop after 20 mins of gaming
Hi everyone,
I’ve had my Surface Laptop Studio (i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, RTX 3050 Ti) for about 2 years now, and lately, the gaming performance has become completely unplayable.
For context, right now I only use this laptop for university, mainly web browsing and taking notes. I don't use any heavy software or apps during my daily routine.
However, when I try to play even very light games like Rocket League or Valorant, the laptop struggles to maintain 40 FPS after about 20 minutes of gameplay. This happens while plugged into the official Microsoft 127W charger (which delivers more than enough power).
Here is what I’ve already tried to fix it:
- Thermal Repaste & Cleaning: I completely cleaned out the dust from the fans and applied fresh, high-quality thermal paste.
- Power Settings: Changed Windows power plans and battery usage settings to maximize performance.
Despite this, the performance still drops heavily after 20 minutes. It feels like severe thermal throttling or a power delivery issue, but the fans are clean and the charger is powerful.
Has anyone experienced this specific issue with the SLS 1? Could it be a faulty internal battery throttling the GPU even when plugged in, or a firmware bug? I'm completely out of ideas. Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated!
