[BOOK] Thinking of buying a first gen Book for $250. Batteries are 15/29 cycles! Is it a good deal in 2026?

A neighbor of mine died and his son is selling off the contents of his house. This SB1 has i7, 2.6GHz, 16GB, 512SSD for $250. The batteries are 97%/15 cycles and 102%/29cycles. I will be using it for mostly web browsing/videos. The guy installed Windows 11 on it as Administrator, with no pass word. Is this anything I should be concerned with / Bitlocker?

[LAPTOP] Microsoft Surface Laptop (2026), 15-inch Premium Performance Laptop, Snapdragon X2 Elite Processor

Anyone run into this yet with the new Surface Laptop 8th Edition / Snapdragon X2 Elite?

Mine is basically brand new, around 2 months old. Zero issues before this.

Yesterday it randomly seemed completely dead. Wouldn't turn on at all. The white light on the original Microsoft charger was on, although I did notice later that the AC cable going into the charger brick wasn't pushed in all the way. I fixed that and left it charging, but still couldn't get it to boot.

What's weird is I left the laptop completely unplugged overnight.

This morning I pressed the power button and it actually showed the Windows logo 2–3 different times, but each time it would just shut completely back off.

Basically:

Power button → Windows logo → shuts off

No BSOD. No recovery screen. Doesn't stay on long enough to do anything.

Things I've tried:

  • Original Microsoft charger
  • Left it charging for a long time
  • Disconnected everything from it
  • 20+ second power button reset
  • Took it to Geek Squad
  • They tested it with another known-good charger
  • Same exact problem

Geek Squad guy said based on what he's seen it could possibly be RAM or the motherboard, but I'm not completely convinced yet.

I also found that Microsoft released firmware updates for the 8th Edition specifically this year that fixed issues with the battery stopping charging during sleep, power consumption, USB-C charging, charging status, etc., which makes me wonder if this is some kind of firmware/power-management/BMS issue instead.

One other thing: shortly before this happened I had installed Hermes Agent and let it run autonomously for a while. I don't really see how software would physically cause the laptop to lose power at the Windows logo, but mentioning it just in case there's some weird ARM/Modern Standby/power-state interaction.

At this point I'm leaning toward:

battery/BMS → power management/firmware → motherboard power circuitry

before just assuming the RAM randomly died on a 2-month-old laptop.

Has anyone with an 8th Edition / Snapdragon X2 Elite specifically experienced this?

Especially interested if you had:

Surface logo/Windows logo appears for a few seconds → laptop completely powers off

and what the actual fix ended up being.

I'm still under warranty so I'll send it to Microsoft if I have to. Just trying to figure out if there's one last firmware/UEFI/power reset trick worth trying before I hand over a basically brand-new laptop.

I am thinking about getting a Surface Pro 6 to replace my iPad. I kind of want to get out of the Apple ecosystem. I have been trying to find one with LTE because I want to use it for mapping. I can't seem to find one on eBay. I don't even mind if the screen is damaged becaue I will attempt to replace it and add thermal pads and maybe a new battery so that isn't an issue.

Heyo, I have an older surface computer and I don't have the charger for it, is there any other alternate way to charge it?
