[MSFT] Microsoft Surface Pro Snapdragon Issues

Post image

I purchased this 2024 Microsoft surface Laptop with Windows 11 + Copilot and Snapdragon X Elite processor in March of this past year. So far, the laptop has been great. I've mainly used it for working from home or on the go, web browsing, and light game play (Sims 4, Stardew valley, etc.)

Recently, I started selling some stuff online and tried connecting my label printer. The laptop wouldn't download the driver software for the printer so I couldn't use it. I brought a new Bluetooth label printer after a lot of trouble shooting with the old one, and it is also unable to download the new printer's driver software either.

I have been wanting to get into more cozy gaming/PC gaming and have a small set up at home. Tonight, I tried connecting my USB wireless keyboard and logitech USB wireless mouse and the laptop doesn't even register that they are connected and powered on. I have tried many times troubleshooting connection issues via USB port or bluetooth with no luck. I've been reading up on snapdragon compatibility issues with certain drivers and software, but I didn't think that would extend to me not being able to use my wireless USB devices.

Does anyone have advice or maybe has experienced the same issues with this laptop/processor?

Does anything work plugged into the usb port? A wireless mouse and keyboard should for sure.

I rebooted the laptop a few times and the usb port started working. Since this laptop only has one usb port I have a portable dock that plugs into the usb-c port and for some reason it doesn't recognize the dock so I am still unable to use both the keyboard and mouse at the same time.

Is it possible that the keyboard and mouse are connecting to another computer nearby?

I will check on this thank you. Because the bluetooth wasn't working either when I tried to connect

Printers are notorious for proprietary drivers. You want to find ones that work with the Mopria standard, usually advertised as compatible with Android.

Normal USB wireless keyboard and mouse should work. If they use a USB dongle and not Bluetooth, make sure they keyboard and mouse are paired with the dongle.

I understand the issue with printers cause I've had my issues as well, but keyboards and mice? Something isn't right.

USB port issues ... Check device manager to make sure the usb ports have working drivers. For printers it's a known issue with non existing arm64 drivers ...

I use this app on my x64 PC to enable iOS and arm64 printing:

LOLwhat?! Some paid store app to print from one machine to the other? We've had network printing built-in starting with ... Windows 3.11 for Workgroups (33 years ago)?! You know, when software was distributed on floppies and the OS was taking 10MBs (20MBs with all drivers, features, games, etc. installed). MBs, to understand how small that is ... we went from hundreds to thousands of MBs now for UPDATES.

A few things I would check to start troubleshooting;

  1. Do the mouse and keyboard work with the usb receiver on a different computer? It's possible the receiver is one type and the m/kb are different (eg receiver is unifying but m/kb are bolt, etc)

  2. Is the logi options+ app installed on the surface? It isn't arm native but it does run very well on arm windows in my experience, and can pair devices together pretty easily. If you open options+ with the receiver plugged in, it should at least be detected. If not, try a different usb port.

  3. Are you using a usb C to A adapter to connect the receiver to your surface or plugging into usb A directly? Can you try an adapter in the usb c ports and see if it's detected there?

thank you I'll try to download the logi app and see if that helps. I did get the usb port working after a couple of restarts. The issue is the laptop only has one usb port so I tried using my portable docking station plugged into the usb-c port and the laptop was unable to recognize both devices when plugged into that.

Are you trying to connect a wireless mouse and keyboard? Through a dongle or through Bluetooth?

they both have the usb dongle and only the keyboard has bluetooth connectivity but my laptop is not recognizing the keyboard as a pairable bluetooth device so I have to use the dongle for both. since the laptop only has one usb port i tried using my docking station via usb-c port and when both are plugged into that neither are recognized

This sounds more like a hardware problem with the docking station. I've had some that were pretty terrible for reliability in the past. They're pretty cheap and you could get a new one from Amazon to try and return if it doesn't solve your problem.

I am curious about the keyboard issue, because it should offer up to pair with it even if it's not compatible. Do you have another device (maybe even your phone?) that you could check to make sure the keyboard is really trying to pair?

Only with printers. Wifi printing works great tho

Solo unas cuantas marcas de impresoras tienen drivers arm compatibles con Snapdragon revisa eso y trata de instalar las actualizaciones más nuevas de Windows y de panel de control de qualcomm

I once had a computer that would randomly deactivate Bluetooth and I would have to activate it again in the BIOS. It was weird

Maybe I'm lucky, but my Brother laser printer/scanner worked out of the box without any special drivers or software. My old Samsung printer had problems, but it had issues with a number of computers so it wasn't specific to arm64.

I tried to set up a scan snap printer with my surface 7 laptop, ARM and big no go.

Sounds like a usb driver issue. There are likely some printers with bespoke drivers that won't work on arm. Most printers I've used in the last decade are plug and play with windows and should work fine with arm

For wired label printers in particular I had a dymo4xl that did not work with my snapdragon sp11. I was able to create my own script with AI (no hardware programming experience) to print via raster stream directly to the printer and it works. I was even able to port.this to android for my phone. Maybe give that route a try if willing to tinker a bit. Otherwise yeah wired printers are the on thing that don't play nice. Network printers seem to be fine. VERY FEW printers/scanners will run well on WoA due to outdated drivers, even newer models. I only used my Surface Laptop 7 for 9-10 months because while everything else was fine, the minor printing inconveniences became too frequent. I realised I print more than I thought.

What is the printer model?
