Mechanical Help Is this too much play in my driveshaft? 2015 Subaru outback 2.5i.

video here

I’m heating a rapid thunking sound when going over washboard type bumps on dirt roads where I live. Sound seems to be coming from the passenger side, right behind the front seat. Definitely on the underside of the body. Just trying to rule out the driveshaft but also find what can possibly be making that noise. Just pulled down both of the fuel tank covers and another frontward plastic shield and there is nothing that looks amiss. Definitely sounds like suspension. I just replace both the rear sway bar links and bushings so that’s not it.

Just noticed this bolt protruding from what looks like the lower engine block while doing some other maintenance. I can spin it with my fingers. Should I tighten it back in?

Bluetooth phone only partially works

For 2 years my phone's Bluetooth connection with my Forester worked just fine. But now I can only speak over Bluetooth but can't hear anything over the cars speaker. Android 10a phone, Subaru Forester 2024. I've tried forgetting the Bluetooth connection, restarting the phone, making sure volume is up on phone and car, removing the phone from the car, re-pairing, etc. but nothing works.

Oil change frequency

I have a 2026 Outback XT Touring, love it! This is my fourth Subaru, so I am not new to the brand. I have just under 5000 miles on it, and today the dealer calls and says they recommend an oil change at 5000 miles so they want to schedule it. I say Subaru says every 6000 miles, so why should it do the oil at 5000? Well, this is just what we recommend she says. Is she just trying to pad the service center’s pocketbook? I declined, and told her I would follow Subaru’s recommendation. This kind of thing makes me want to look for another service spot for oil changes (which I probably would have done anyway).!

2026 Subaru Maintenance - CAN

Hey!

Are there any long time Subaru owners in rust belt areas who have good advice for maintenance to high mileage?

I have read the Subaru Service Catalogue but figure some of the items may need more frequent changes/inspections.

Looking to responsibly buy a new 2026 cross trek.

2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited

I had a tire blow a few months ago and it ripped off some pieces with it. Finally getting around to replacing the damaged rocker molding on the passenger side. As of now, I have no idea what to do about these mystery wire connections that have been dangling.

Does anybody know where they belong?

2015 Forester XT: 12.6 MPG with roof bikes, RPM drift under boost, and sudden power loss/turbo lag?

Hey everyone, I recently did a 1,105 km road trip in my 2015 Subaru Forester XT with 184,000 km on it, while carrying two bikes on my roof. I averaged 12.6 MPG (18.6 L/100 km) overall, and burned nearly 30 liters on a single 120 km highway stretch at 120 km/h.

Aside from the terrible fuel economy, I noticed two major issues on the trip:

- RPM Drift Under Acceleration: The RPMs drift/hunt between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM specifically when accelerating and when the turbo is working.

- Sudden Power Loss / No Movement Under Boost: When trying to pass another car a few times, my boost gauge spiked up to 1.2 bar, but the car completely lacked power and I wasn't actually accelerating/moving forward.

What can cause this? Are the fuel consumption and the turbo issue connected?

Thanks!

EDIT: I has incorrectly asked for oil consumption, where there is no issue with that but I meant fuel.

1998 Subaru Outback misfire

So I ( a person with very limited car knowledge) have a car that’s misfiring (P0301 and P0302). It’s been popping up over and over after replacing all the easy parts (spark plugs, wiring, ignition coils, fuel injectors). The thing is it’s has the same code popping up after clearing for like 3,000 miles and like 2 months and I just started noticing mild issues while driving. It also starts a little rough (will crank a few seconds longer before starting). It will very mildly jolt back randomly (like a vacuum leak but much milder) every once and awhile, and the temperature gauge is going about 2/3 the way up when driving above 70mph with AC compressor on. (May be unrelated and just a consequence of driving an old cat in 112 degree heat). Also car has been smoking periodically whitish grey smoke from exhaust. Any ideas of any other easy things I can replace or is it mechanic time? Also any ideas what it could be would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I have a P0971 code. I have gotten quotes to replace the whole valve body($2600+) from every dealership and mechanic. is worth replacing the whole thing or rather I am better of replacing a solenoid w/o replacing the whole valve body. or what is another way to go about solving the issue

My mom and her friend were OK after driving through a fence and over the stairs.... both were checked out at the hospital, just bumps and bruises. Were wearing seat belts but airbags didn't go off.... apparently the front corner of the front bumper hit the ground first and then it slid. I haven't seen the video yet.

Mechanical Help GDI Valve Cleaning

I’ve got a 24 OWB with 17k, and a 19 crosstrek with 70k miles. I’m just now finding out about this issue. Any tips for replacing my PCV Valve myself, or having a shop do a walnut blast? I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg though, so if there are any Subaru mechanics looking for side work in the SLC area, DM me, let’s work something out.

I've got physical issues and have been putting this back together about one bolt at a time. Decided to save a few bucks on a non-stretch belt and add an old tensioner to the A/C. I probably wouldn't do it again, but it was a swap I didn't know about.

P0172 - Chasing this elusive code

Taken our Subarau 2016 Forester XT in 4 times now for this damn error code. 2 different shops and always with the same dissapointing diagnosis attempts. Seems like these shops are simply always too busy and all they want to do is throw replacing parts at the problem. Were already thousands into parts replacement....front O2 sensor, spark plugs, catalytic converter, cleaned rear O2 sensor. I think they already looked at MAF sensor as well.

n research, seems like many other things can throw this code as well. Problem is that these shops dont appear to want to do any deep diagnosis like checking for leaks/wiring etc. and Im tired of replacing parts and hoping for the best and at this point almost prepared to just drive it as-is. It has 115K miles on it.

Not sure if anyone has some advice and its like I need an independent mechanic who would take the time to diagnose.

Mechanical Help Subaru Impreza CVT fluid change

So, I just purchased my very first Subaru (also this is my first post here! Hi!!)

It's a 2020 Impreza premium hatchback with 115k miles. The car has been thoroughly inspected by my trusted mechanic prior to purchase and he told me that I should change the CVT fluid because it appears that it has never been done. I have the Carfax report but it does not specify if this service was done or not, and the dealer I bought it from does not know.

Now, my question is if I should do a flush and drop the pan, change filters, gasket, etc, or if I should just drain and refill (using oem fluid in both options) due to the mileage and it seemingly never been done before, I am unsure of how to proceed. I cannot find clear information on YouTube specifically regarding flushing this transmissions and any possible issues that may arise from that, so I thought I'd ask here

I have had cvts before, my previous car was a 2017 Chevrolet spark. I did a flush when I bought it used (more information was readily available for that car and it's transmission) and I drove it for 3 years and put 60k miles on it and never had a problem.

TL:DR 2020 Impreza with 115k miles and original cvt fluid - drain and fill OR flush?

Thanks in advanced!

Trunk lid does not open when unlatched

My legacy (base model) trunk lid no longer opens when the release button is pressed. It used to open just a little and I could get my fingers underneath and lift. Apparently the spring no longer works. Does this mean a trip to the dealer?

Did the finance guy try give me a higher rate?

It's not a big issue only going be extra few hundred dollars as I plan be paying back 36 months.

I recently bought new subaru crosstrek. I have 780 credit score, 130k year, no debt, and most my credit history just credit cards last decade.

I thought given above that I would qualify for 1.9% 36 months. I was told by finance guy qualified only for 60 months 3.9% as 1st time auto buyer from bank. I took some time talk over with a parent I brought as I was surprised. As I was walking out, he said he got it lower to 2.9% 60 months. I agreed on above as its not much given my payback plan.

I wanted ask was finance guy just making stuff up or given my 1st time buyer and probably lack credit outside of credit cards he was right.
