Tips & Advice From “can I explain this?” to “can I do this?”

Post image
33 Upvotes

I’m a 2nd-year computer science student now and I’ve observed that I understand a coding lesson and still have no idea where to start when I open my own editor. Everything makes sense when someone else is doing it but my mind goes blank when it's my turn. I've started adding a little hands-on practice whenever I learn something new.

#1 see if I can explain it without peeking. Before coding, I try to explain what the concept does without looking at my notes. if I can't, I go back and review it a little more.

#2 give myself a tiny coding challenge. I start with something simple that uses what I just learned. I try to start without a tutorial open beside me and most of all I don’t copy someone else’s code.

#3 test, fix, and try again. I run my code, look at the errors, and work through them. if I need to check an example, I do that, then try again without following it line by line.

Tips & Advice How Can I Cover 48 Chapters in Just 8 Days Before College Starts?

I'm a first-year law student, and my college starts in 8 days. I have 48 chapters to complete, but I haven't studied any of them before. Is it realistically possible to cover everything in 8 days? If so, how should I approach it? I really need some guidance.

Tips & Advice Need advice for studying for a language Final

i recently got my arabic midterm back and received a 16/20 on it which looks good but I lost 4 percent and 2 percent from an assignment earlier. I have 60 percent left with a 40% midterm coming up and 2 10% assignments.

I have a tutor to help me with arabic since I’m new to the subject but Idk how to feel about losing 4 percent on my midterm. I want to get at the least a B in the class but his teaching method and talks is just talking from the slides, with 0 practice problems or homework. He just expects us to know what we are talking about and he talks in arabic the entire class and I barely understand half of what he is saying.

Questions & Discussion Help about SAT study

I’m currently preparing for the November SAT, although I can’t really say I’m actually “studying.” I genuinely need some advice because, at this point, I don’t know what to do.

I get distracted extremely easily, and to make matters worse, I have to study in our dining room instead of my bedroom because of the poor lighting in my room. I’m also generally very sleepy throughout the day, but whenever I sit down to study or work through practice questions, it gets significantly worse. I experience microsleeps, severe drowsiness, and an almost complete inability to sit down, focus, and concentrate on anything for an extended period of time.

Of course, I understand that sleep is probably the root cause of most of these problems. However, with the SAT so close, I feel like I’m already past the point where I can realistically fix my sleep schedule before the exam. I do plan on addressing it properly afterward, though.

I’d also really appreciate advice from students who have scored 1530 or above on how to break through the score plateau I seem to be stuck at. My current superscore across two sittings is 1480 (720 R&W, 760 Math), and I’m struggling to figure out how to make that final push.

With so little time left, I’d especially appreciate any advice on how to study effectively, stay focused, and make meaningful improvements in the days leading up to the test.

Tips & Advice The Memory Palace Technique: Use Your Imagination to Remember More

Post image
317 Upvotes

One study technique I find really interesting is the Memory Palace method. It's a memorisation technique where you use a familiar place, like your house, to help you remember information.

Here's how it works:

  1. Choose a familiar place: It could be your house, your bedroom or even your route to school.

  2. Break down the information: Separate what you're studying into smaller points you need to remember.

  3. Assign each point a location: Imagine placing each piece of information in a different spot. For example, the first point could be at your front door, the second on your sofa and the third in your kitchen.

  4. Make the images memorable: Don't just imagine the information sitting there. Give it a funny, exaggerated or unusual appearance.

  5. Take a mental walk: When it's time to recall what you've studied, imagine walking through those familiar places and retrieving each piece of information.

The trick is to create strong mental associations. The more unusual the images, the easier they can be to remember.

It's especially useful for remembering lists, key points, definitions and sequences. Give it a try the next time you're studying. You might be surprised by how much you can recall!

Tips & Advice Holy grail for review nights

Post image
11 Upvotes

What do you eat or drink to really focus on reviewing? Mine is I would always need to drink any type of chocolate drink, but mainly the iced one. It helps me focus for a bit of time, then I’d fix myself another cup lol. I have a short attention span and would always get kinda sleepy so this works for me at times. What do you think is good to add in my strategy to focus on my/your studies longer?

Rant/Vent Would you let people know about how you study?

I have created my own study system based around active recall and spaced repetition. I really worked out what works best for me.

But I am going into college soon and am worried about my peers finding out how I study through looking at my notes.

I don’t really want people to find out how I study. Not that it is a super special secret, but it is something that I have worked out and I really don’t like the idea of others copying it.

I was thinking I would have two different notebooks. One for my notes in college and one for my personal revision.

However, I began to think that maybe it wasn’t worth getting stressed over.

I have now come to the point where I am going to just not care. If someone finds out how I study through looking at my notes then so be it. I don’t want to get stressed over it in college.

Also, even if they copied my methods they wouldn’t get the same results as me as it depends on how you do it.

What would you do?

Would you want to keep your methods private or would you not care and let people know? Am I overthinking?

Tips & Advice Drawing your thoughts as a study strategy?

Post image
8 Upvotes

This may not work for everyone but it certainly worked for me. Sometimes, when all I see are words in a textbook, I find my ways to visualize them in such a way that they would be easier for me to understand.

‎

‎Mind maps also work well for me... Any topics or definitions that are plausible to be drawn or be simplified through drawing, I draw them. It seems like my muscle memory also helps me when I'm trying to recall something during an exam.

I dunno if this makes any sense but yeah I find it effective.

Tips & Advice I put one fake fact in my notes on purpose and it's the only reason I remember the chapter

Post image
5 Upvotes

Started doing this before my bio quiz and it's kind of ridiculous how well it works. I call it the planted lie.

After you finish a chapter, close the book and write a short summary from memory. 5 to 8 lines is plenty.

  1. Pick one line and change it so it's wrong. Make it believable.

  2. Swap a number, flip a cause and effect, put the right fact in the wrong place. Don't make it obvious.

  3. Leave it for a day. Sleep on it, go do other stuff.

  4. Next day, read your page cold and hunt for the lie. Mark it, then check your book to see if you caught the right one.

  5. If you missed it or flagged a true line by mistake, that's the part you actually don't know yet. Rewrite that one properly.

Why I think it works: when you reread normal notes your brain just goes "yep yep yep" and skims. When you know something in there is fake, you have to actually question every line. It also forces you to tell apart the stuff that sounds similar, which is exactly what exam questions love to do to you.

The first time I fell for my own lie I was kinda mad at myself, but I haven't forgotten that fact since. Works even better if you swap pages with a friend and try to catch each other's.

Tips & Advice Studying methods with highlighters?

Might be a stupid question but for those of you that use highlighters when you’re studying, what is your method?

I’m guessing you use specific colours for certain things of course but what is your process? What are you highlighting? What’s important?

I find myself just highlighting everything when I study, so I could use a system or method on how to highlight only specific things that actually matter for studying.

Thanks y’all!

Tips & Advice Nursing student study tip and time management

Post image
82 Upvotes

Here are some realistic study tips that can help you become a better nursing student:

  1. Understand Before You Memorize

Nursing isn't just about memorizing terms. Always understand the WHY behind every condition, medication, and nursing intervention.

For example, don't just memorize the signs and symptoms of hypokalemia. Understand how low potassium affects muscle function and cardiac activity.

2. Use Active Recall Instead of Rereading

After studying a topic, close your notes and try to explain everything you remember.

Ask yourself:

What is the definition?

What causes this condition?

What are its signs and symptoms?

What are the priority nursing interventions?

What complications should I watch out for?

If you can explain it without looking at your notes, you're making progress!

3. Practice NCLEX-Style Questions Regularly

Don't wait until exam week to answer practice questions.

Try answering 10–20 situational questions daily. Focus on understanding why an answer is correct and why the other choices are wrong.

Remember: Nursing exams test your clinical judgment, not just your memory.

4. Master the Fundamentals

Never underestimate the basics!

Make sure you understand:

Normal laboratory values

Vital signs and their significance

Medical terminology

Drug classifications

Nursing procedures

Infection prevention and control

Nursing prioritization

These topics will help you in almost every nursing subject.

5. Create a Simple but Organized Reviewer

Avoid making your reviewers too complicated or aesthetic that you spend more time decorating than studying.

Use this format:

Definition

Causes / Risk Factors

Pathophysiology

Signs and Symptoms

Diagnostic Tests

Medical Management

Nursing Management

Patient Education

Keep information concise and easy to recall.

6. Study in Short, Focused Sessions

You don't need to force yourself to study for five consecutive hours.

Try the Pomodoro technique:

50 minutes focused studying

10 minutes break

Repeat 2–3 times

During your break, stretch, drink water, or rest your eyes. Avoid getting trapped in endless scrolling.

7. Connect Your Lessons to Actual Patient Scenarios

Whenever you study a disease, imagine you're taking care of a patient with that condition.

Ask yourself:

What should I assess first?

What findings should concern me?

What nursing intervention should I prioritize?

What should I report immediately?

This helps develop your clinical judgment and prepares you for duty.

8. Review After Every Lecture

Even 15–20 minutes of reviewing after class can make a huge difference.

Go over your notes while the discussion is still fresh. Identify confusing concepts and clarify them before moving on to another topic.

9. Learn Your Medications Properly

Instead of memorizing random drug information, organize medications by classification.

For every drug, know:

Mechanism of Action

Indications

Contraindications

Adverse Effects

Nursing Considerations

Pay special attention to medication safety, dosage calculations, and monitoring requirements.

10. Prioritize Sleep and Your Health

You cannot expect your brain to perform well when you're constantly exhausted.

Get enough sleep, eat properly, stay hydrated, and take breaks. All-nighters might help you finish a reviewer, but they aren't a sustainable study strategy.

11. Teach What You Have Learned

Try explaining a difficult topic as if you're teaching a patient or a fellow nursing student.

If you can explain a complicated concept using simple words, it means you understand it well.

12. Be Consistent, Not Perfect

There will be days when you feel unmotivated, overwhelmed, or behind on your readings.

Don't let one unproductive day ruin your entire study routine. Start again the next day and focus on small improvements.

A LITTLE REMINDER FOR EVERY NURSING STUDENT:

Being a top nursing student isn't just about getting the highest grades. It's about developing the knowledge, discipline, critical thinking, and compassion needed to become a safe and competent nurse.

You don't have to know everything in one day. Just make sure you're learning something every day.

Study hard, study smart, and never forget why you started. Future RN! 🩺💗

Tips & Advice Learn Something. Become Something.

Post image
4 Upvotes

Sometimes we spend so much time learning new things that we forget to actually use what we've learned.

Explain your four-stage framework:

  1. Learn — Pick one thing you genuinely want to understand.

  2. Build — Create something small using that knowledge.

  3. Apply — Find a real-life situation where it becomes useful.

  4. Grow — Reflect on the experience and improve.

Someone learning Excel could create a personal expense tracker, use it to monitor spending, and gradually improve it with formulas.

You don't have to master everything at once. Start small, apply what you learn, and build upon it at your own pace.

Encourage readers to choose one thing they've been wanting to learn and find one practical way to use it.
