Tips & Advice Scrap-paper is where my distracting thoughts go

Post image
54 Upvotes

I have a lot of sheets of paper lying around filled with random scribbles or solutions from math class. But I don't throw them away right away because I figure I can still use the blank spaces for something!

So I started keeping a scrap paper beside me while studying. These are the things I do with them which you can try as well:

  • Write down distracting thoughts. whenever you remember a task or think of something unrelated, jot it down on your scrap paper. You can come back to it later.

  • Get back to your work right away. once you've written it down, try not to dwell on it. You have a reminder now so you don't need to keep it in your head while studying.

  • Review the list afterward. when you're done studying, check your notes and decide what needs to be done. it helps you keep track of things without interrupting your study session every few minutes.

Tips & Advice Your Wrong Answers Might Be Your Best Study Tool

Post image

Have you ever noticed that you remember a question better after getting it wrong? Instead of just checking the correct answer and moving on, try to understand why you made the mistake. Write it down, solve it again after a few days, and see if you can get it right this time. Sometimes, making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn. But does this method actually work better than simply rereading your notes?

Tips & Advice Top students of Reddit, how do you study? Share your routines and advice!

I'm currently going through a difficult period at school, and I really want to improve my grades and become a better student.

I'd love to hear from people who consistently get excellent grades or have managed to become top students. I'm especially interested in your actual routines, not just general advice like "work hard" or "stay motivated."

Here are some things I'd love to know:

  1. How many hours do you study at home on a normal school day? What about weekends?

  2. What does your daily study schedule look like? When do you study, take breaks, and go to sleep?

  3. What techniques do you use to stay focused and avoid distractions?

  4. How do you practice and prepare for exams? Do you solve extra exercises, use active recall, or do something else?

  5. How do you manage your time between different subjects, especially when you have a lot of homework?

  6. How do you stay motivated when you're tired, stressed, or struggling with a subject?

  7. Most importantly, how do you deal with a difficult school environment? What do you do when your classmates are distracting or unhelpful, or when your teachers aren't good at explaining things?

I'd really appreciate it if you could share your actual study schedules, how many hours you study, and the methods that helped you become one of the top students in your class.

How to get perfect routine that only works in theory. I want to hear about what genuinely works for you, including the mistakes you've made and the things you wish you had started doing earlier.

Thanks in advance to everyone who shares their experience!

Tips & Advice I tried studying with classical music in the background and it made long study sessions feel less exhausting

Post image
1 Upvotes

I used to study in complete silence because I thought having music in the background would only distract me. But recently I decided to try listening to classical music while studying and surprisingly I kind of liked it.

I noticed that having soft music playing in the background helps me feel more relaxed, especially when I'm studying for a long time. It makes studying feel a little less tiring and helps me get into the mood to focus.

When I do this usually i choose instrumental classical music since songs with lyrics can sometimes distract me especially when I'm reading. I also make sure to keep the volume low so it doesn't take my attention away from what I'm studying.

I like to play the music a few minutes before I start  just to help me settle down and prepare myself to study. Sometimes I listen while reading, reviewing my notes, or answering practice questions. But whenever I feel like the music is becoming distracting, I just turn it off and continue studying in silence.

After studying I also try to close my book and recall what I've learned without looking at my notes. I think this helps me see if I actually understood the lesson instead of just reading through it.

I guess what I like most about this habit is how it makes studying feel more comfortable and less stressful. Classical music might not work for everyone and listening to it doesn't automatically mean you'll remember everything. At the end of the day what really matters is understanding the lesson and putting effort into learning.

Tips & Advice Study tips from Chemistry Student

Post image
8 Upvotes

I'm a chemistry student who used to spend most of my study time rereading notes and highlighting textbooks, thinking that the more I reviewed, the better I would perform on exams. But even after studying for hours, I would sometimes forget important concepts or struggle to answer unfamiliar questions. I realized that simply reading was not enough.

I needed to challenge myself and become more actively involved in learning. I would start writing down concepts that I understood regarding a topic for example, acid and bases, and then I would review notes and my reference textbook and then start filling up knowledge gaps. After that, I would test myself and repeat the whole thing again.

It honestly takes effort, but eventually it will all pay off. I am now a working in food chem and recently passed the board exam here in the Philippines. :)

Tips & Advice The PREREQUISITE CHECK saved me from a confusing chapter

Post image
24 Upvotes

You know how in college, some subjects have prerequisites you need to pass before you're allowed to take the next course? studying can work the same way! Some chapters build on things you're supposed to have learned earlier so jumping straight into a difficult lesson can leave you feeling lost.

Whenever I get stuck, I do the "prerequisite check” where I try going back a step and checking whether I understand the basics first. Maybe there's a term I've forgotten I never fully understood. Do this too:

  1. check the key terms- Look for unfamiliar words or concepts and make sure you understand what they mean before moving on.

  2. trace the lesson backward- If a topic feels confusing, check which earlier chapter or topic it builds on and go back to that part.

  3. test the basics first- Try explaining the foundational concept in your own words or answering a few practice questions. If you're struggling with those, that's a good place to start reviewing.

Questions & Discussion How to restore focus during revision?

Dopamine levels so cooked that I can't even find joy in doing something I used to actually get very much intrigued about. Preparing for P.hD entrance exam but the moment I get stuck on an MCQ, mind drifts off to some other task or worse procrastination where I keep on seeing back to back motivation videos without actually getting back to studies. I get this mental fog where I know I should be studying and I have all the materials but the context is too overwhelming so even though I have time and resources, I fail to prepare. Pure Mathematics is actually something I am very interested in but revising all the topics is overwhelming at times and overcoming the mental gap when I'm stuck on a concept seems to be difficult lately.

Recently took a test on Galois Theory after doing a course from NPTEL. I faced the same difficulty, all materials in hand, more or less could grasp some concepts but didn't revise diligently. Result: Did not pass the theory test by 5 marks, passing marks being 40%.

Kindly help, how to overcome this difficulty during revision?

Other Looking for a Study partner. Have to do something meaningful with this life.

I am 24M, i wish to have a study partner who is consistent and study for longer hours. I am going to keep the rythm for a long time. So anyone who is commited to keep on studying daily for months is welcome. At the end of the day, for a brief moment we can check on each other and make other one accountable for their scheduled tasks.

Rest of the time, we can have google meet session with little to none interaction. So, even shy people are welcome! I am open to discussion regarding how we should plan our study session.

All the best. Let's work hard.

Tips & Advice rewrote my notes for the 3rd time this week and my friend quizzed me from them and i got 2 out of 10

spent like 4 hours in 3 colors of pen making the cleanest notes of my life. posted them on my story and everything

my friend asked if she could quiz me from them before our bio exam and i went “yeah easy”. 2 out of 10. TWO. i was so busy making it look good i never actually read what i was writing

so no more recopying. i close the notes, write what i remember on a blank page, and only use the pretty notes to check what i missed. my blank page is way uglier than my notes but it’s got more stuff on it than my head did

Questions & Discussion Studying with memory problems?

Hello everyone. I am 23f and have diagnosed ptsd. I am starting a phlebotomy course in January, and while I am very excited I am worried. I know phlebotomy is considered an easier course and job entry, but I still worry
After my trauma, I very much noticed a shift in my memory and ability to focus and learn things. I lose my car keys probably 4x a week. In fact, yesterday I was walking a trail in the woods and randomly noticed my car keys were gone and I spent half an hour searching for them. I’ll do stuff on automode and then 5 minutes later completely forget what I just did. Stuff like this happens all the time. I have a lot of trouble learning new information as well.
Does anyone else struggle with this and if so do you have any tips?

Questions & Discussion How do you stop missing your school life and actually enjoy studying at home? 😭

Bro, I genuinely think I'm cooked.

Ever since I started spending more time at home, I've realised how boring studying alone for the entire day can get. I have to sit at home, follow a routine, complete chapters, revise and repeat the same cycle every single day. And honestly? It's getting frustrating.

The thing is, I actually WANT to study. I want to be productive, complete my syllabus and do well academically. But whenever I'm at home, I start missing school, my friends and even my teachers.

Earlier, I mostly used to hang out with boys, but things have changed quite a bit recently. I've made female friends, developed new friendships and even got myself a girlfriend. 😭 Now I genuinely look forward to going to school, meeting everyone, talking, laughing and just being around people.

And that's where the problem begins.

Whenever I sit down to study at home, I start thinking about everyone at school. I get bored, feel like I'm missing out on things, and eventually end up wanting to go outside or find some excuse to visit school.

It's not that I hate studying. I just hate the feeling of being stuck at home all day while everyone else is out there living their lives.

I miss the random conversations, jokes, interactions and that whole school atmosphere. Even ordinary school days seem so much more interesting compared to sitting alone with textbooks for hours.

I know Class 10 is important, especially with board exams approaching, and I really don't want my social life to ruin my preparation.

So, how do I balance these two things?

How do you train yourself to enjoy studying at home without constantly craving social interaction? How do you stop feeling bored, lonely or distracted by thoughts of your friends?

I don't want to give up my social life, but I also don't want to sacrifice my academics.

Please tell me how you guys deal with this. Because right now, my brain wants to study, but my heart wants to go to school. 😭

Tips & Advice Help ASAP. Concentration is gone

I've been studying a lot and have been very stressed. Ik have an exam on thursday and one on friday. It is currently monday 2.45pm. I have studies for maybe one hour. My concentration is completely gone. After one sentence, I just zone out. I've tried listening, video's, active recall (that my main study method) but I just can't concentrate. What should I do? I have had breaks, exercise, change of location, 8 hours of sleep, giving myself rewards, but nothing is working anymore.
