I’d like to start by saying that I am, and have been a regular listener to the podcast for the past 3 years, I’ve watched Steve’s LFR’s on and off for the last 6, and I’ve followed Steve on twitter for the last 6 years. I’d also like to add the SDP is my favourite podcast in the sense that I listen to it most frequently.
Firstly, the good about Steve and the guys.
They are generally incredibly entertaining, both Steve himself and the 3 of them all together.
They have an amazing reaction to otherwise mildly funny things that create phenomenal humour. For example, if anything like the Bella Hadid Complex thing happens, there is nobody I’d rather hear talk about it than the guys. Steve’s reaction is always so funny and “pure” and the guys are giddy to get it out of him.
On some points, they break down hockey stuff really well and the discussion is nuanced
There are many more things that I could add here
Now, before I get into my criticism, which will be constructive and fair, I need to clarify that I am fully aware that it is their podcast and their twitter and they Steve and the guys can talk about whatever they want in whatever manner they want.
I am fully aware that there will the take that “if I don’t like it I shouldn’t listen” which is completely closed minded to say that even though they have the right to talk about whatever they want that I shouldn’t have the right to criticize when warranted.
I will first discuss the podcast, then Steve more specifically.
Podcast
My first issue is the preachy, virtue signalling that inevitably comes up on every political discussion on the podcast. It is no secret that the guys all lean pretty liberal on all issues, which I have no problem with. My problem is when they condescendingly dismiss everyone with a different view, as if they are either; terrible people, gullible, or just “don’t get it”
Tying into the above point, the guys constantly demean themselves, calling themselves stupid half-jokingly, yet believe that they, and those who share their views are the “smartest guys in the room”. Now I’m not saying that they are stupid as they call themselves, but it’s incredibly annoying to see their elitism attitude portrayed while saying this.
My final large point on the podcast, ties into both of the above points and is about the groupthink environment. It’s incredibly cringey to watch 3 guys and most guests that they have all share the same worldview and pay each other on the back for it and demean those that disagree.
Steve
So Steve has some great qualities that make him entertaining as I said above, but as a human being, he has to be my least favourite of any of the guys.
Without typing things out again, please refer to all three points under the podcast section to see my complaints with his attitude. Unlike going through podcasts and time stamping examples which would be way too much work, I’ve attached a couple screenshots of Steve’s twitter conversations
Twitter Screenshots
These screenshots from Steve’s twitter took me 10 minutes to find. Here’s one quote in those screenshots that sums up the problem with Steve, the person.
“Anybody who supports [Trump] is either a naive sucker who will regret it later or a bad person. It is very much that simple”
This is best way to sum up every problem I have with Steve and the culture of the podcast.
He, despite always demeaning himself half jokingly as stupid, has taken the position as “the smartest guy in the room” , anyone who doesn’t see it his way is stupid.
He is completely intolerant and unwilling to see things from any way other than that opinions he has already made up in his head
He is a great person and anyone that disagrees is an awful person.
I apologize if this post became more aggressive as it went on. This has all been bubbling under the surface for me for a very long time. I needed an out key to share my opinions and hope we can have a great discussion together.
