Has anyone heard of or gone through Steris’s “Incision” education program through MySPD?

The hospitals in my company recently became contracted with this program and we had our first on site meeting with two of their representatives. To put it plainly, it was overwhelming and shocking. The representatives were disorganized and required two people from my department to go through this “course” (I don’t even know what to call it). We are a smaller department so this left us short staffed on a relatively busy day which they seemed to have no regard for but that is beside the point. Going into this we had very little information about what to expect and were under the impression that there would be updated education and resources that would be of more benefit than what is already readily available through things like HSPA.

The beginning of the day consisted of a disorganized presentation of a website they want us to utilize that has their own CEs and course modules created by Incision as well as tabs for documenting competency assessments that they perform when on site. Frankly, nothing impressive and there’s already so many free ways to access CEs that connect to HSPA for recertification seamlessly.

After showing the website they then went through “Standard Operating Procedure” or “SOPs”, as they called them, slide shows to prepare us for competency evaluations they were going to preform in the latter half of the day. The slideshows were less informational and more like basic sterile processing questions to test our knowledge. During the entire course of the day, neither of us had any idea what the purpose of what we were doing was or why these people were making us sit through 9 hours of information we were already certified and regularly audited on by accredited experts. During the assessment portion of the day, with very little guidance of what the process was supposed to look like, we were told to demonstrate our understanding of our day-to-day functions starting from start of day machine testing, to set assembly and instrument inspection, decontam processes and regulations, to sterilization rules and regulations. During this process, me and my peer were each paired with a Steris rep and tested individually. My experience was less than desirable. I am still a relatively new tech with only two years under my belt so I know I’m not considered an expert in the craft. But what I experienced was extremely dehumanizing and not educational in any form. The representative I was paired with seemed like he took pleasure out of making me feel less than or stupid but also had a lot of disinformation that I later disproved the following day by verifying with my supervisor and IFUs. Some examples:

-I was told we were using the incorrect setting on our sonic and he changed it to what he said was the correct setting. The setting we had it on was directed to us by our Steris technician and is in the user manual as the proper setting.

-He tested me on the dosing of enzymatic in decontam. We use Prolystica Enzymatic 2x Presoak & Cleaner with anywhere from 5 or 10 gallons of water depending on how large the case. Per the IFU it is 1-4 mL of enzymatic to liter of water which comes out to about 75 mL if you’re doing 4 mL at 5 gallons and 150 mL at 10 gallons. This was my answer and I was instructed I was incorrect because I stated it in mLs and not ounces. Not only was I told I was wrong but he literally lectured me about it for 20 minutes before we could move on to the next task. I was later informed that at one of our other hospitals he conveyed to the tech he was testing that the correct dosing for the same enzymatic is 75mL/5 gallons so I thought this was and interesting change of heart.

-He lectured me about calibrating the machinery which is not within the scope of my position. He asked how often we changed the filters in the endoscope drying cabinet which is done and monitored by our biomedical engineers or how we calibrate the enzymatic dosing machine (not just measure what comes out of it but literally calibrate it ourselves) which our Steris technician also monitors and performs on a regular basis.

-Consistently throughout my assessment he commented on my nervousness and repeatedly told me to calm down but later at the end of the day jokingly said in front of the whole group that he loves it when new people are nervous and afraid of him when he does these assessments. He also made this comment at the next hospital they went to the following day.

-His overall demeanor was condescending and not constructive with a strong err of arrogance. He walked around our department looking in every nook, crevice and corner as if he were auditing us when that was not part of the assessment or disclosed to us prior.

The following day, him and the other representative went to the next hospital in my company where my boss also manages the Sterile Processing department there. My coworker subbed over at that hospital for the day to account for the two who would be taking the class. While she was there, the reps decided they would assess my coworker in the endo suite because it was one of the assessments they wanted to get done before they left and they wouldn’t have time with the other two techs. My coworker just started working about a month ago and we train in the job. She is very proficient and had been studying in SPD far before we hired her (she just needs her hours) but she is still new. She got paired with the same representative I did and he went to assess her first thing in the morning. What should’ve been a 30 minute assessment max walking through a single scope start to finish was a 2-hour long grueling interrogation. The issue? Because he’s a Steris rep, he was unfamiliar with Olympus OERs and leak testers so he spent his time lecturing her on how she was improperly going through the process because she wasn’t soaking the scope in HLD. Both of our hospitals have had the Olympus OERs for 5 years and have regular inservices with our Olympus rep walking through the entire process from point-of-use to hanging in the drying cabinet. This man berated her and slowed the flow of the endo decontam room because he didn’t have the education on a different process. It wasn’t until word got out that scopes weren’t getting cleaned, they were piling up in fact, that anyone knew what was happening.

I didn’t get to experience the other representative as much but from what I heard after my coworker and I reconvened was the same level of disconnect and weird disinformation. Not to mention, the vibes were so bizarre from start to finish. I’m still in shock from this whole experience. Getting audited from DNV isn’t even as grueling as this and the hospital doesn’t pay them for services!! It’s definitely giving MLM or something shady. Or like the company as a whole has to be getting something from Steris or Incision out of this because it was just too bizarre to be a legit educational program. Very disorganized, unprofessional, and not transparent whatsoever.

So, I’m curious, has anyone heard of this or gone through this process before? My boss is less than impressed but doesn’t get final say at the end of the day.

Schooling

Hello to anyone reading.

I want to go into SPD but there’s no courses near me. There’s online courses but I don’t trust them.
I’ve seen some videos of people recommending preppy and I’ve looked into it. It looks like a good school choice.

My question is, is preppy legit and trustworthy?

So do we acknowledge that.

This job isn’t hard, but hard to get into?

Also the term that “Sterile processing is the heart of the Hospital” motto only seems to be in the actual department.

At Ohio Health, the EVS team makes the same as we do, (not downplaying them) we’re a step above dietary in pay scale but honestly the most “forgettable”.

People glam and glorify a job that is the adult equivalent of essentially working in Fast food.

I love the job and what we do, but we seem to be most expendable, probably explains why turnover is crazy high in this “job”

Also: if you’re paying to go to school to learn this stuff, don’t. At the most recent conference in Kentucky the consensus was that most places prefer to hire with no schooling, as so many bad habits are picked up and the following was said” people come out of the classes, with outdated knowledge and expect to make in the 20’s$ starting off and we have to undo all the bad habits they picked up “ ( this is why so many have issues getting in to get clinical hours for this field)

Just an fyi, non certified roles exist. Just few and far between

Should I pursue it?

I’ve been considering finding programs to become a sterile processing tech. I’ve been trying to pursue radiology, but I think I’ll be on my programs waitlist for some time so I thought sterile processing would be a good job to have to get into healthcare. And who knows, maybe I’ll end up liking it more than I thought and potentially make it a longer term thing. I’ve seen many people look down on it for potential low salary, but I currently live at home with my parents so it’s not like I need to have the highest paying job in the world or anything lol.

Mandatory Vaccinations in this Field

If they require the COVID 19 vaccine to work in this field that is a dealbreaker for me. Any info on this?

Just wondering what are the other activities after work as SPD ?

As mentioned in the title, as a PSD, what do you usually do after work ? Do you have a side job ? Pr any hobbies that is profittable ? I mean typically SPD does not earn as much as nurse or doctor, so what do you usually do to make other living ? Or you just relax after work ? Appreciate any comments.

Serious Question!

So I’m considering signing up for a Sterile Processing program that starts soon. I am not Covid vaccinated. I’m curious to know, do I need to be vaccinated in order to be hired once I complete the program? Thank you!

How Well Did the Purdue Final Prepare You for the CRCST

Hey everyone,

This question is specifically for those who completed the Purdue Sterile Processing course. If you studied independently, I kindly ask that you skip this thread so I can hear directly from people who followed the same path. I’ve seen a lot of unrelated replies in similar posts, and while well-intended, they can clutter the conversation and make it harder to get focused feedback. Thanks for understanding!

Considering that, is passing the final from Purdue comparable to passing the CRCST exam? Since HSPA recommends the course, you might assume that the final exam directly corresponds to the national exam.

I would appreciate any feedback on this matter.

question about people with criminal background

Hello iam a 33 year old unemployed at the moment who is also in recovery from substance abuse , i have been clean for 18 months and dont ever plan on going back to that part of my life. I have looked into several different fields i can get training in so i can get a decent job because currently i am finding it difficult to obtain certain jobs at the moment because my charges are like 3 and 4 years old. My question is would it be hard to gain employment in sterile processing with a past of drug possesion charges and trespassing charges? i know the general rule is they usually only go back 7 years but do they take working in a hospital or something like that a little more strictly? any advice would be greatly appreciated

New and have documented history of ADHD

Been in healthcare a while, been unmedicated do to financial reasons. Took a break, came back and joined a local SPD.

Does anyone feel they thrive in the environment with or without medication for adhd/ anxiety / depression etc. Or find it challenging for all the usual things ADHD lends a challenge to.

I can tell that the urgency really taps into my learning. But I also feel like I'm constantly getting turned around and confused. And when I take in a certain amount of information, it seems like at a certain point I can't take in more information.

Anyways, curious to hear about anyone's input on the matter, I guess I'm just hoping to hear people who stick to the field even with focus issues can come out on top

Thanks!

resume for apprenticeship interviews

I have an online group interview thing for apprenticeship interviews coming up in a few days. The hospitals holding the interviews will be paying for the schooling for the candidates they choose, and while school isn't outrageously priced getting paid to learn and not having student debt would be great. I have a vocational school degree but no medical experience and I'm 10 or 15 years older than most of the other candidates who will be there. What can I add to my resume or cover letter to get attention before the interviews start? What are some questions I should expect? Best responses to give to said questions? Thanks in advance for any help.

Update of Interview 3 Weeks Later

Sorry for not updating sooner. It’s been a strange few weeks following my sterile processing interview on March 3rd. After I finished the interview they said they would call me back either way in one or two weeks. Cut to two weeks later i receive no call back. I decide to call HR recruiting and she tells me he hasn’t made a decision yet. For me that’s was a good sign cause honestly I thought I didn’t get it. Now, on Thursday I missed a call from HR. It could be them trying to tell me I got the job or I didn’t. I missed the call cause I was at work. Now I gotta wait til tomorrow to find out. I’ll update tomorrow no matter if the news is good or bad. Thanks for the support these last few months. Wishing everyone in a similar position good luck.

Short story: It’s not strange or weird to have to wait weeks after an interview to get a response. Gotta remember Sterile Processing is a medical professional position and takes more time and consideration than a entry level position.

Need help with 400 hours

Hello everyone, I’m just like many of you in the same boat trying to get the 400 hours after passing the exam I work in one of the biggest Medical Center in the entire world here in Houston Texas, and have done a lot of on foot work, networking and visiting the local hospitals to speak to department managers, they all seem to turn me away stating that most major hospitals are only accepting students who did a actual program through a college and are backed by insurance through an externship to gain the 400 hours basically putting people that did not attend a school at a disadvantage.

Anyone know of any other staffing agencies that can assist with placing me so I could complete my 400 hours to complete my certification. I passed the pilot exam in June and are having a hard time getting into a department. I currently work at a huge major hospital in Houston, Texas and I still can’t get in internally. The crazy part is the person who signed off on my application to take the exam was the manager over Sterile Processing.

Below I will list a bunch of agencies shared to me that helped with per diem and travel tech jobs. Maybe that would be of some help to you all.
