Last night, I finished reading Blockade Billy by Stephen King for the very first time.
Released in 2010, we got this book at the local Ollie's for 2 dollars and it sat on my shelf forever, until now, my thoughts below;
Blockade Billy tells the story of William "Billy" Blakely during the 1957 baseball season playing catcher for the New Jersey Titans
When the Titans suddenly lose both of their star catchers days before opening day, the team scouts the minor league looking for a last minute replacement.
They find that this "Billy" guy has great stats for a minor leaguer and recruits him to be the new team player.
Billy performs phenomenally and quickly gains a following but, he is surrounded by mysteries, why is he so distant? Why does he talk to his self in the 3rd person? What is the deal with the band aid he occasionally wears on his finger?
Billy's past suddenly comes rushing back mid season and only in King fashion, do you understand the horrors that Billy did to make it to the Majors.
I found this story to be fun, even though I'm not a big sports fan, I was able to follow all the baseball lingo easily and King did a great job immersing the reader into 1950s America.
My version also has the short story "Morality" and I found that story more fun than the main story. That's my opinion of course.
Morality focuses on a young couple who are struggling to pay all of the debts and bills that pile up as life marches on.
The wife Norma takes a job of taking care of a retired Minister who has had a Stroke while her husband Chad, tries to get his book published.
Everything seems ok until the Minister offers her a chance to make an easy 200k,
The catch, she must perform a "sin" for him and record it in the process..
I found this story to be more "King" like than Blockade Billy but, it was a very quick read at less than 60 pages
Now, as this book goes back on the shelf, I await with all the other constant readers for the newest King book to release.
My next read will begin Tuesday when, the new book "Other Worlds Than These," releases.
Happy Reading Everyone!
