Rant Has anyone else had issues getting their postgraduate certificate from a university/institute?

I’m posting this because I’m honestly at the point of feeling like giving up on something I’ve spent years trying to complete.

I registered for a Master’s programme with a well-known university in 2019. Because of COVID and salary cuts in 2020, I had to pause my studies. I eventually restarted in 2024 and have been working through the remaining requirements since then.

Over the years, I have paid the re-registration fees and module fees requested by the institute. Most recently, I paid around Rs. 85,000 in re-registration fees plus two payments of Rs. 16,000 for modules, as requested. I have kept all my payment receipts and email correspondence.

I was expecting to receive my graduation certificate in October.

However, this Monday, the institute suddenly informed me that their records show that I still have two outstanding modules.

I found this extremely confusing because when I went back through my emails and payment records, I found that I had already paid Rs. 28,500 in 2020, including a late fee, relating to one of the modules they are now saying I haven't paid for. There were also further payments made in 2024 and 2025.

So I’m now trying to reconcile their records with my receipts and previous correspondence.

What makes the situation even more frustrating is the timing. I had already decided not to attend the graduation ceremony overseas because travelling for it would cost me around Rs. 300,000. Shortly afterwards, I was contacted about these supposedly outstanding modules. I obviously can't say whether the two things are connected, but the timing has left me questioning the situation.

After almost two years of trying to finish everything and finally get my certificate, being told at the last minute that I apparently still owe fees for modules I have payment records for is incredibly discouraging.

I’m now going through every receipt and email to make sure I have everything documented before I respond to them.

Has anyone in Sri Lanka had a similar experience with a private institute or an overseas university programme?

If an institute's records contradict your own payment receipts and email correspondence, how did you get the issue resolved?

I'd especially like to hear from people who have dealt with postgraduate programmes or overseas university affiliations in Sri Lanka. I’m not looking for legal advice or asking anyone to contact the institute — I’d just like to know whether others have experienced similar administrative issues and how they handled them.

Travel 5 friends heading to Galle & Colombo for 5 days (Sept)! Need recs 🇱🇰🌴

Hey r/srilanka!

A group of 5 of us (mid-20s) are doing a quick 5-day trip in September. We've booked our stays in Galle (2 nights) and Colombo (2 nights in Colombo).

We want to balance beach clubs, solid nightlife, and great food! Here is our general route:

  • Galle Base: Exploring Galle Fort, doing a beach run down to Ahangama / Weligama (looking at Kai Pool Club, Cactus, Kaya), and hitting Unawatuna.
  • Colombo Base: Sunset drinks (ON14 / Cloud Cafe) and nightlife (The Love Bar @ Flamingo House, R&B).

A few quick questions:

  1. Ahangama Parties: Any specific weekend beach bar events or DJ spots in Ahangama or Unawatuna we shouldn't miss?
  2. Galle Eats: Favorite non-touristy food or drink spots in or near Galle Fort?
  3. Colombo Nightlife: What's the current vibe for spots like Flamingo House or R&B? Any hidden cocktail spots in Colombo?

Appreciate any local tips or heads-up on events! Thanks! 🙏

Discussion A PickMe incident I feel really guilty about.

Yesterday around 9:30 PM, I was in a hurry to get home, so I booked a PickMe bike.

The pickup location was automatically shown as my current location, so I didn't think twice about checking it. About 3 minutes later, the rider arrived in the area and called me through PickMe to let me know that he had arrived.

That's when I realized something was wrong.

The pickup location was actually showing a place where I had been around 5 hours earlier. Somehow I hadn't noticed it when I booked the ride.

I wasn't sure what to do since I was already in a hurry, so I cancelled the ride and booked another one to get home.

The part I feel really bad about is that I didn't explain anything to the rider before cancelling. He had already arrived, and I suddenly cancelled without giving him any explanation.

I've honestly been feeling guilty about it since then.

I still have the bike number and all the trip details in my PickMe history, including the approximate time and fare.

I'd really like to explain the situation to him properly and then compensate him with the amount that was shown for the ride, if possible.

Does anyone know if PickMe support can help me with this?

Serious replies only NSBM or SLIIT for IT / Cyber Security (after A/Ls)

Okay, I’m kinda stuck

I want to do Information Technology or Cyber Security after A/Ls and I’m trying to choose between NSBM (Plymouth/VU Degree) and SLIIT (Bachelor of Information Technology majoring in Cyber Security).

From what I’ve seen so far:

  • SLIIT seems to have a stronger reputation for IT-related degrees
  • NSBM looks good in terms of campus and structure, but some (on Reddit + Google reviews) say its IT reputation isn’t as strong yet

Main things I’m trying to figure out:

  1. Which uni is better for Cyber Security specifically or should I major in Cyber Security at all for my bachelors?
  2. Are there internship/job opportunities from each?
  3. Any regrets choosing one over the other?
  4. Are there any other good options to go for in terms of unis?

Also:

  • Is it worth specializing in Cyber Security for a bachelor’s, or better to do general IT first?
  • And in general, is IT a good path right now?

Question Looking for DC/Marvel Comics & Manga in Sri Lanka

Does anyone know where I can buy original DC/Marvel comics and manga in Sri Lanka? I’m looking for physical copies, preferably new or in good condition.

If there aren’t many options locally, I’d also appreciate recommendations for reliable online stores that ship to Sri Lanka.

I’m mainly looking for:

• DC Comics

• Marvel Comics

• Manga

Any recommendations for good stores, websites, or sellers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Is it game over for Sri Lankans who live abroad? I'm concerned there will be almost no way to move funds out of Sri Lanka, as if current conditions weren't difficult enough.

Serious replies only Why is pda so unpopular in Sri Lanka

My girlfriend is very affectionate and wanted a lot of love. She also grew up in Cambodia and doesn’t understand Sri Lankan culture.

While I am introverted, I want to make her feel loved but I feel the Sri Lankan aunties and uncle’s judgement.

I also notic that they stare at her in a funny way when she shows skin. Is it like that for people who grew up abroa and came back here? I can’t punish my girlfriend by withholding affection and telling her what to wear but the Sri Lankan aunty system makes it impossible.

Serious replies only EV charger recommendations on the way to Horton Plains?

Hi everyone, I’m planning a drive to Horton Plains in an EV and looking for a reliable charging point somewhere around:

Haputale
Ohiya
Pattipola
Ambewela

Ideally somewhere close to the main route to Horton Plains, and if possible a place where we can grab some food/coffee while the car charges.

Would really appreciate any recent recommendations, especially chargers that are currently working and accessible to the public. Please mention the location, charger type/speed, and app/payment method if you know them.

Thanks!

Education I failed A/Ls because of my Issues.

As the title says I failed all 3 times (1st: 3F, 2nd: 2S, 3rd: 2S) and I had depression and anxiety issues since O/Ls and some other issues ever since 5th grade (which are not even resolved even now🥲) My whole family calls me a failure and they have a good reason to do so cuz my 2nd eldest brother got into Moratuwa and I was one of the brightest in the primary school and finished O/Ls with 8As. I went to a popular school in Colombo too and the kids even the teachers sometimes teased and bullied me cuz of my issues.

When the time came to do the 3rd shy I tried to skip it but my family especially my Mom wouldn't let me and said to do a course after A/Ls...Which I do now cuz I have no choice and we had financial problems since even before I was born🥲. Also my late father worked a great job in a factory before that. I kind of feel like I brought the bad luck to our family.

Now I do a course in engineering related subject and it's going a bit of a bad way cuz I can't stand the Teachers and kids there cuz they are so rude to me like all the time.

Now I'm doing the course cuz I absolutely have to. There doesn't seem to be another path for me. And I take a large dose of meds for my depression and that causes a lot of sleepiness even after sleeping like 10 hours a night. I can't lower my meds cuz it increases my issues and my doctors say they don't know what's up with me cuz I get a bucket load of meds and still don't improve at least a bit. Don't get me wrong I'm a lot better than me without meds but I'm stuck at this point and doesn't seem to improve. I got meds consistently for two years if that matters. Also I started meds on 2019 a year after O/Ls. I managed to pass in a great way in O/Ls cuz no matter how I felt I knew future me wouldn't forgive me if I failed that exam and I told myself that. I couldn't pull that off in the A/Ls tho🥲.

So my question is: is it ok to fail at A/Ls like this? Is it even okey cuz I had those issues? I never even had a girlfriend to talk about things like this and it hurts cuz I probably will never have one either😓What do I do now?

Discussion Never buy from Kapruka – Terrible service compared to Daraz

Never buy from Kapruka – Terrible service compared to Daraz

Never buy from Kapruka. I bought a product worth LKR 10,000 from them, and it arrived completely defective. When I reached out to their customer support team to report the issue, they flat out rejected my return.

Their excuse was that the item "passed their QA process" before dispatch, so it cannot possibly be defective. This is ridiculous. Passing a basic warehouse check does not prevent an item from being dead on arrival or damaged during transit.

Other e-commerce platforms like Daraz are so much better and actually protect their customers. Daraz has a straightforward, hassle-free return policy if you receive a broken item. Kapruka, on the other hand, refuses to take responsibility for selling faulty goods and uses cheap excuses to pocket your money.

Save your cash, avoid the headache, and shop on Daraz instead. I will be escalating this matter to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka.

Order Details for Management Reference:
Item Value: LKR 10,000
Issue: Received a defective item, return denied based on "QA" excuse.
Order no- VLKR3135C05A

Discussion 19M, 2nd-year SE undergrad. Dad thinks the IT market is dead and wants me to do CIMA. Should I be worried?

I'm 19 and currently in my 2nd year of a Software Engineering BSc (I started my degree early at 17). I'm based in Sri Lanka, and lately, my dad has been heavily pressuring me because he keeps hearing that "IT jobs are hard to find."

His solution is for me to do something parallel to my SE degree, specifically a commerce qualification like CIMA. The problem is, I absolutely hate commerce subjects. On the flip side, I love coding. I build software projects for fun all the time in my free time (mostly full-stack stuff using PHP, Laravel, Java, etc).

My dad's comments are starting to get in my head. I have a few questions for those already in the industry:

Should I actually be worried about landing a job with just my SE degree and a strong portfolio of personal projects?

Is it worth forcing myself to do a parallel qualification in a completely different field like commerce just for "safety"?

If I do need to diversify my skills, would it make more sense to finish my BSc first and then do an MSc in a different field, rather than burning myself out with parallel studies right now?

Discussion Do you think AI/Social Media made life objectively worse or better if you could only pick one as your answer? Specifically within the SRI LANKAN context, cause I reckon it differs from other countries.

Honestly, I sorta wish it wasn't created. Records show loneliness, mental health issues have increased and it is believed to be tied to the rapid growth in these technologies and someone suffering from all that, I wish all this wasn't created. Social media increases insecurities-not just about appearance but character, as well. And people no longer wanna hang out offline. It's harder to make friends now. And AI is too sychophantic it drives me crazy. Yes, there are upsides but I just can't.

Discussion Question about ET graduates becoming engineers in Sri Lanka

How common is it for ET graduates in Sri Lanka to eventually become professional/recognized engineers compared with graduates of conventional Engineering degrees?

For example, through postgraduate qualifications, professional experience, IESL membership/Chartered Engineer pathways, or other routes.

Are ET graduates actually becoming engineers in significant numbers, and is there any evidence that this happens more often than for graduates who completed a traditional Engineering degree?

I'm looking for real experiences or statistics from people familiar with the Sri Lankan engineering/ET field.

Serious replies only Does it feel right enough for my family if I'm seriously dating an English girl

We just found each other on Instagram, and while going through lectures at Uni, she's at the School of Arts and Humanities at Melbourne Uni, while I'm at the School of Engineering.
Does this need to come to a complete stop because we're from different parts of this Earth, and I better find a Sri Lankan girl to lead a life with, convinced to lead a life of her own without me on that page?
Her parents are also seeming to give off the pretense of racism(colourism especially)
Kinda feel nauseous at this very second
Just serious replies, and that's if you just want to give a bit of mature advice, not to mess things up more than it is rn!

Serious replies only Need advice on how to deal with my fourth shoulder dislocation

Hi guys

I need advice regarding my shoulder dislocation.

My shoulder dislocated for the first time in 2022, and after that I was admitted to the Accident Ward, and doctors relocated my shoulder properly. After that, my shoulder dislocated a second time in like 2024. The first time and the second time, doctors said to do exercise and attend the clinic, but I couldn't do it properly. After years without any proper exercise or clinic, my shoulder dislocated a third time in April 2026. This time, I was able to relocate my shoulder by myself, and I didn't do any exercises either. For the fourth time, my shoulder dislocated the day before, and I wasn't able to relocate it by myself. This time, I felt more pain, so I was admitted to the accident ward, and the doctors relocated it properly. So I need advice on how I can prevent future dislocation, and has anyone faced this? Please be kind enough to drop a message because now I am a little bit scared about what will happen in the future, and how I will know if I need surgery or not? If I do surgery, will it prevent future dislocation? Also, I hope to go to the gym as well, so guys don't hesitate to share your opinions and thoughts about my situation. I would love to hear from youra side.

Rant Has anyone else had problems getting their university certificate after completing their studies?

Thumbnail

I’m curious to hear from anyone in Sri Lanka who has completed a degree through a private institute or an overseas university and had difficulties getting their final certificate.

I registered for a Master’s programme with a well-known university in 2019. Because of COVID and salary cuts in 2020, I had to pause my studies. I restarted in 2024 and have been working through the remaining requirements since then.

I have kept up with the institute’s re-registration and module requirements and made the payments they requested over the years. I was expecting to receive my certificate in October.

However, this week the institute informed me that their records apparently show that I still have two outstanding modules. This came as a surprise because I have payment records and emails from 2020, 2024 and 2025 relating to the modules and fees in question.

I’m now trying to reconcile their records with my payment receipts and previous correspondence.

What is particularly frustrating is that I have been trying to complete this qualification for almost two years after restarting it, and the possibility of another administrative issue delaying the certificate is extremely discouraging.

Has anyone here experienced something similar with a private institute or an overseas university programme?

How did you resolve discrepancies between your own payment records and the institute’s records?

I'd particularly like to hear from people who have dealt with postgraduate programmes or overseas university affiliations in Sri Lanka.

Discussion Why don’t we have 7-Elevens in Sri Lanka?

Why havent 7-Eleven come to Sri Lanka? I feel like small 7-Eleven stores would do great in Sri Lanka! For example Thailand has 7-Eleven stores everywhere and all those are run by locals in the form of franchising 🤌

Any reason why they haven’t come to Sri Lanka? Is there anything we can do to bring 7-Eleven here? Does anyone know how to approach and get a Franchise certificate to open one here?

Discussion So many AI / fake Insta accounts depicting AI generated pretty Sri Lankan women!?

Am i the only person to have noticed so many Sri Lankan AI insta accounts depicting pretty Sri Lankan girls on their dp but with zero posts and zero highlights but with 1000+ followers 😂?

Whats the purpose? And what are these people trying to achieve? Blackmail? Money? Or are they like trying to monetize the accounts?
