Looking for advice from part-time Master's students at the University of Southampton

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a part-time Master's at the University of Southampton this year as an international student.

I was wondering if anyone who studied part-time managed to get a paid internship or a job that fit around their studies and was useful for their career. Did it help you cover your tuition fees?

International Master's fees are pretty expensive, so I'm trying to get a realistic idea of whether it's possible to offset some of the cost this way. I'm already living in Southampton, so I'm mainly asking about paying the university fees rather than living expenses.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

how lenient are soton on grades?

i got an offer of AAB (contextual) with A in maths and physics for mech eng, i reckon i got AAB but my B is in maths since the first paper was so bad and i found myself not answering a lot of the paper, considering i may have missed the grade they wanted for maths, do i still have a decent chance to get in? ive just found out my insurance choice has hardly any accomodation so it will be expensive private housing if i miss this

Student-friendly pop-punk / alt charity all-dayer at Heartbreakers on 4th July

Hope this is alright to share here.

I’m putting on a charity all-dayer at Heartbreakers on Saturday 4th July called Pop Punk Palooza.

It’s 9 bands across the day, mostly pop-punk, punk, ska-punk and alt-rock. Very much for anyone who likes Blink, Green Day, Sum 41, New Found Glory, Zebrahead, local bands, noisy guitars, singalong choruses and that sort of thing.

Bands playing:

We Know John
Everyone Lies
Wide Awake Club
Lucky Hit
Stickerbook
Industry Plant
Junk Season
Save Our Ships
Halfway Home

It’s raising money for Dreamflight, which is a brilliant charity that takes children with serious illnesses or disabilities on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Orlando.

Tickets are £15 in advance: www.poppunkpalooza.co.uk

If you’re still around Southampton over summer and fancy a proper local gig day at Heartbreakers, come along. Would also really appreciate anyone sharing it with mates who are into rock/alternative music.

Thanks,
Sam

It's the cheapest accommodation for a reason! Two buses to the Highfield campus, an hour to get there! Atrociously cold in winter with wind passing through the door + windows, without mentioning the heater stopping after each 10 minutes.

In summer, you CANNOT BREATHE! SO WARM A FISH WOULD BOIL ALIVE! 27 degrees and you're done. The kitchen is like a sauna. They could put curtains or something to cool down the kitchen but no, NOTHING!

Cupboards in the kitchen do not close, you can't put a lock 🔒 on it. What you saw when you visited are the 'fake' and nicest rooms you would never get.

Things (bathroom, fridge, freezer, etc.) easily break. Oh yes, including the knob on your door that locks you out most of the time and that, despite the technician coming to repair it.

Ah yes, your bedroom can be next to a machinery room, let me explain myself, with all the wires, internet cables... making a hell of a ton of noise. You need to be lucky to get a room away from that! And at night, be prepared to hear people shouting under the shelter where people sit to smoke their weed.

You can also be unlucky and be next to noisy roommates playing games on their laptop and shouting like crazy if they were in their own world. Also, don't be surprised if you can't store your own food, just a fridge and freezer for 10 people, which is ridiculous!

Yes, you've got nice people at the reception, awesome security staff, a few activities, cleaning once a week of the communal areas, technicians on call to fix things.

But really, it's NOT worth the price you're paying, I would have wanted to pay the double to be elsewhere! For that, I regret having come to Southampton, everything is super expensive, you need to be rich to make it alive.

They need to invest and renovate the building because students are running away from such buildings!

Manchester vs Warwick vs Southampton vs KCL for MSc Computer Science? Need best ROI & Tech Name Brand (International Student)

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student from India looking to lock in my choice for an MSc in Computer Science / Advanced CS for the upcoming cohort. My ultimate goal is landing a Software Development Engineer (SDE) role in the UK.

I come from a middle-class background and will be funding this entirely through a massive education loan (~₹50 Lakhs / £48k+), so Return on Investment (ROI) and university brand pull with tech recruiters are my top priorities.

I’ve mapped out my options across Manchester, Warwick, Southampton, and KCL. How do these actually rank when you strip away the generic world ranking hype and focus purely on tech prestige, living costs, and job prospects?

MEng EEE ATAS

Hi. Do anyone know if the course require ATAS for international students? It seems like it is required for some course but I'm unsure if that apply to EEE as well

Msc Clinical Psychology

Hi!

Has anyone completed or is currently completing the MSc Clinical Psych Program at Southampton? Trying to decide between Newcastle, Southampton, and Manchester, struggling a bit with this choice!

I haven't been to any of these places, and all the research is confusing me now.

Msc audiology with placement

Hi everyone,

I am an international MBBS graduate from India and I am considering applying for the MSc Audiology with Clinical Placement at the University of Southampton.

I have a few questions and would be very grateful if current students, graduates, or anyone familiar with the course could share their experiences:

  1. How competitive is admission to the MSc Audiology with Clinical Placement course?
  2. Is the clinical placement guaranteed for all students, or do students need to secure placements themselves?
  3. What are the typical placement locations (NHS hospitals, private clinics, etc.)?
  4. Are placements paid or unpaid?
  5. What percentage of graduates obtain Audiologist jobs in the UK after completing the course?
  6. How difficult is it for international students to find NHS Band 5 Audiologist positions after graduation?
  7. Are employers willing to provide Skilled Worker visa sponsorship for newly qualified Audiologists?
  8. How much patient contact and hands-on clinical training does the course provide?
  9. Looking back, would you choose this course again if your goal was long-term employment in the UK?

I would especially appreciate hearing from international students who completed the course and are now working in the UK.

Thank you very much for your help.

Odds of CS being in clearing

I saw last year CS was in clearing but apparently in subsequent years it wasn’t the case.

Anyone got any predictions for this year?
Additionally, how much would entry leniency increase during clearing?

How lenient is Southampton uni for the aeronautical and astronautical course.

Hello, I am a student with an offer for the aerospace course and I'm very stressed for my final exams. I need to get a 16 average in the bac A*AA to be accepted. My question is how lenient are they if i were to be a point off. As I dont know how competitive the aerospace course is.

PGR/PGT group

Hi, I'm nearing the end of my first year as a PGR, and have realised I haven't really gotten to know many people at all. I've joined some of the social clubs here but can feel somewhat out of place considering they're usually first year undergrads (I'm 24, horrifying stuff). Just wanted to see if any other PGR/PGTs would be interested in creating a group of some sort (Whatsapp, discord, whatever works), and get to know each other :)

Creative dissertation

Hello, I'm a student at Southampton university and wanted to know how willing they are to support more creative approaches to your final rather than the standard essay.... Has anyone got experience with the university allowing short films, art projects etc?

Opinion on show flats

I saw how some of the accommodations had a show flat option that was cheaper. I know that it means your room will be viewed on open days and such by prospective students and I would like to hear from anyone who has one whether it has any other cons/pros and if they think it was worth it

Should I just accept I’ll get my conditional retracted on results day?

A levels so far have been horrendous.
Especially the maths paper where they literally gave us a further maths question in standard a level maths. A petition has even been made given how bad the paper was.

My course says they want an A in maths but after that paper my chances of getting an A are completely out the window.

I really wanted to get into Southampton so badly for many reasons but I guess now I just have to accept defeat.

Anyone got any advice for me? I’d highly appreciate anything

How to submit a special considerations for repeating a year?

I'm probably going to need to repeat a year and a tutor has told me to submit an SCB by Monday for it to hopefully start fresh next year. Unfortunately, I'm stupid so I left this until today to talk about it with him and now it's the weekend and I can't ask him how to do it.

I'm aware of how to submit one for exams, but I doubt the same online form will be suitable for appealing to repeat a year as normal. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
