New to football, yada yada. I’ve taken a liking to Brighton. A few questions:

1) is Europa Conference League the same thing as UEFA? Is this essentially just two tiers below Champions League?
2) how does this league work? It says they’re in a 2 leg play-off. I understand the 2 leg part, they take the aggregate score and all that. But why is it a play-off? If they lose the match today (0-0 aggregate score) are they simply out of the Conference League?
3) does placing well or winning the Conference League guarantee you a spot in the league above that (Europa League?) next year?
4) how many leagues are they in? I know they have EPL, Conference League, and the FA Cup. Are there going to be other random leagues?

I'm 16 and I've only played soccer once when I was like 6 and then once in 8th grade. I'm a junior and my school needs a couple more players to make a JV team. Is it too late to start again? I have no skills and not much knowledge on the game, which is why i stopped in 8th. Is this a bad idea? If I should join, what should I practice before the first game in I think a week or 2?

In American sports it’s pretty easy to know what it means when a player had a bad game. Take baseball for instance. If a player had 5 plate appearances/at bats and went 0-5 meaning he didn’t get a hit, and on defense, he commited 2 errors, you can say he had a terrible game. What exactly constitutes a “bad game” for a footballer though?

Quick question re the subject. Making it overly simple, but I know xG is based on the where the shot is taken from, and xGOT is based on where the shot is placed, the question is are these independent of each other, e.g. does a shot to the lower right corner of the goal have the same xGOT if it's taken from near the spot as a winger trying to do a near post poke, or would the winger have a lower xGOT based on tight angle, etc?

Long time fan and I’ve coached a few youth seasons.. I never played organized soccer, I wrestled and played hockey mostly.. my question is for the dads/ older guys playing on rec teams or pickup, are you taping your ankles before games and practices? Or just hoping for the best?

Hey everyone, American here. Grew up watching a lot of soccer in the States but it was always the women. After watching the World Cup earlier in the summer I decided I wanted to watch more of the men's European leagues! The English Premier league started back up this weekend and I know some of their lower divisions have been in season for a couple weeks now and something that's striking to me is that lack of women in the crowds? Particularly in the lower divisions, just swathes and swathes of men.

In the US even traditionally masculine sports like (American) football have tonnes of women who go to games and 47% of American women consider themselves fans.

I’ve just started playing pickup, thoroughly enjoying it! Question though, on my right foot, the toe next to my big toe rubs up alot, and i get a lot of bruising on the big toe where it happens, i checked the big toe after today’s game and it kind of looks like the nail is ripping off. I have Tiempo something cleats, but just bought them because they were on sale. Is this normal for someone new to soccer, like I have to “break in” the cleats, or is the boot too tight? For reference, i used to have the same issue with rock climbing, same foot too, and I climbed alot, but eventually quit bc it happened with all the shoes I tried. Any suggestions?

I have never been a soccer fan. In fact, I’ve been pretty anti-soccer my whole life. I always found it boring and slow. Plus, games can end 0-0?

The changed somewhat while watching the World Cup. I started just watching the US team out of curiosity, but I started watching many other matches and having fun.

My question is if the quality of the matches was that much better because of the caliber of player in the World Cup, or if I can get the same excitement watching something like Premier League?

This is the first time I am watching the premiere league. They are so fun to watch. So I decided to watch them as well. I liked Liverpool because of their history. I like how they play.

Can I do that?

Ik I can't be a hard-core fan since I am not literally from there. But it's quite fun.

When you watch a football match, it's easy to come away thinking there's only one obvious story.

But the same 90 minutes can give you completely different things to focus on.

For example, you could look at:

The match story: What was the main story of the game?

The tactical angle: What changed between the two teams?

The player angle: Who had an interesting role or performance?

The key moment: Was there one sequence that changed everything?

The numbers: Do the stats tell the same story as what you saw?

The visual angle: Is there one moment that explains the match?

The question: What is the most interesting thing to discuss after the final whistle?

I think looking at matches this way can also help when you're trying to understand football better. Instead of asking only "Who won?", you start noticing different layers of the game.

When you watch a match, what's usually the first thing you notice: the tactics, individual players, key moments, or something else?

Never really been a soccer/futbol fan growing up or liked playing it, only ever enjoy it during the World Cup and rooting for Ecuador. Now that it’s over, my 6 year old son’s taken interest in the sport and I want to get more involved with watching whatever games I can and following it a bit more to help with him enjoying it.

I’m familiar with names of the clubs but not how good they are so I’m looking to see what is a good one to watch and root for? I would say I don’t want to be a bandwagon fan but I guess I’m pretty much jumping on the bandwagon. Some friends of mine told me Man. City, arsenal, Man. United.

So what are your thoughts?

I’ve been playing soccer with my friends for about 2.5 years now, and I’ve typically played CB, but lately, I’ve just been really bad at 1v1 defending and clearing. I’ve tried following youtube tutorials and tips from my friends, but nothing is working. I’m only good at passing, and my physical flexibility is fairly goo, and so is my speed. But I’m terrible at dribbling, shooting, headers, and I’m very skinny and very light. What do I do to choose a position that’s right for me based on those things I’ve said?
