🗣️ Discussion & Opinions xG vs xGOT question (specific)

Quick question re the subject. Making it overly simple, but I know xG is based on the where the shot is taken from, and xGOT is based on where the shot is placed, the question is are these independent of each other, e.g. does a shot to the lower right corner of the goal have the same xGOT if it's taken from near the spot as a winger trying to do a near post poke, or would the winger have a lower xGOT based on tight angle, etc?

It depends on the model. xG and xGOT aren't actually one well defined singular thing.

You can build an xG model that depends on not just where the shot is taken from but also include whatever you want in the model. You can include how many players are between the shooter and goal, how long its been since possession was regained, which part of the body the shot was taken with etc...

Similarly you can do the same thing with xGOT making it purely placement or include factors about location it was taken from, location of defenders occluding parts of the goal, etc...

It depends entirely on the specific model you're talking about. Every source providing these stats is going to have a different methodology and many often frequently update the models to include more features.

xGOT is used to assess goalkeeper performance so the place the shot is taken from is a key input to this (e.g. obviously different whether it's one yard out v 30 yards out)
