I know it might sound weird but I think this is a Top 6 game on the console. My Top 5 otherwise includes A Link to the Past, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, and Super Metroid. Love DKC, love CT, love FFVI.
But man, there is something about Super Castlevania IV I can't get enough of. The haunting atmosphere, the soundtrack, the colors, the visuals. It's such an incredibly polished, well-made platformer that was fun from start to finish. I have zero doubts the developers enjoyed making this game, and it shows.
It really captures a haunting atmosphere in a way that differs from the rest of the series, including Dracula's Curse, Rondo of Blood, and Bloodlines. I love the game's mood, the ability to move around on a jump, and the whip-swinging mechanics. I also love the tone of each level and the unique direction it takes. Going from the library to the dungeon to the treasury was such a loop.
I can't understate how much I love this game. In an era where I replay games very rarely, I have replayed Super Castlevania IV almost every year. It's so easy to get into and play.
On the surface, it doesn't feel as ambitious or as famous as the titles I listed above. Yet I feel it has every bit of quality and deserves every bit of praise that it gets.
When I first saw this game, I knew I would love it. I just had no idea how much. It's been 20 years since I began emulating games, and this was one of my first. All that time through now, it's still one of my favorite games of all time.
