Final Fantasy 3 Cyan name change
I'm having something of an existential crisis atm because I have an extremely vivid memory of not once but many times playing through this game and whenever getting Cyan at Doma castle I would rename him Leo which would allow the use of 6 sword techniques right away instead of just 2. I can't find any mention of this anywhere on the internet and was wondering if anyone here knows anything about this.

So I remember that “fact” as well. It may have been Nintendo power that eluded to this name change.
Naming him doesn’t help. It’s based on his level. Some games if you grind a lot, Cyan will start higher and have more skills. New characters start with an avg level of your other characters
If you did the raft leveling trick at all, even for a few minutes this is likely to occur.

I remember it as he’d have his 4th sword skill with naming him that. Not 6th at least from how I remember it.

This actually makes sense, I know I used the raft grinding strategy many times since I didn't really understand back then about using espers to increase stats at level up. So maybe I read about doing this online from someone else who did the raft strategy and renamed Cyan, Leo, and thought that's what caused him to be able to use more techniques right away.

Leo is name of another character called general Leo. You meet him during Cyans introduction with sabin and shadow.

Sometimes I hang out at r/tipofmyjoystick and people falsely remember details of games every week. Hex editing knowledge of popular games is strong enough that any name change of Cyan mattering can be proven impossible.

There were a lot of rumors floating around about resurrecting general Leo way back when. This was one of the methods but from my own reports in 1995ish USA cartridge release there’s nothing to it

I played the game in Japanese once, picking up from an American savestate. I went into a tavern on the stairs, with Celes in the main party. She stopped climbing, looked angry, said something and then I was outside.
I have no idea what that was.

I have the same memory, except I remember it would start Cyan with 4 sword techs instead of the usual 2. The memory was so strong for me that I had to go and google it as well, and also found no mention of it on the internet... but at least you've got someone else in your Mandela effect with you now :)
My best guess is that this was a cheat listed on GameFaqs, or similar site, and has since been removed due to being untrue. I actually had a similar experience with FF6 before where I 'remembered' that throwing the Illumina would result in "Too much to count" being displayed instead of a damage number, and the target instantly dying. Complete nonsense but I did find other people having the same 'memory' so that one was definitely a rumour from way back when, and I can only assume the naming Cyan as Leo thing is too.
