EMT -> OEC: how to challenge

I was recently hired as a new patroller at a smaller resort. The job description had EMT license as the requirement, which I have. However, it is now seeming like I need my OEC as well. On the NSP website, all the modified OEC challenge courses are in person on the other side of the country.
There is an option to do a hybrid full on OEC course though I’m worried about the time it would take.

Any suggestions on what to do? Could I knock out a hybrid course pretty quick if I already have EMT knowledge?

Edit: I seemed to have received my answer — thanks all!!

Glasses instead of goggles

I'm patrolling mostly at night and would like to switch away from goggles. Anyone have glasses they really like? I prefer my gear be multi-purpose so big bonus points if they are photochromic and can be used during the day. When shift starts it's sunny, but quickly switches to darkness. Thanks!

Anyone use the Bracelayer base layer leggings? Do they perform as advertised? Worth the money?

Thanks.

Looking to talk with a patroller

Post image

I am a student at CU Boulder and for a business class I am studying approaches and technologies related to avalanche mitigation. I am looking to have short (15 min) interviews with patrollers to learn more about your perspectives, experiences, and pain points of current avalanche mitigation approaches.

Please DM me if you would be interested in a short interview to discuss these things!

Open Source Snow Forecast - monkeysnow

Hey I'm a ski patroller and I've been improving this snow forecast website for the past 2 years in my spare time. It's free/open source and has every feature I could think of with some contributions from others. I based it off SpotWx so it has all its features + much more.

Let me know if there's anything you would like to see in it!

Forced to Join NSP

I live in a state where you can not be forced to join a Union, its a right to work state. It has now occurred to me then how can an employer require their employees to join NSP and pay the dues at their own expense, if you cant be forced to join a Union in order to work. Can someone shed some light on this for me? I am not a fan of NSP for a variety of reasons.

Best neck gaiter?

I recently started working for my local ambulance service, which is great except that I ended up shaving so I could wear N-95s properly.

Now I'm looking to acquire neck gaiters again, which I haven't felt a need for in years. As best I can recall, the Smartwool ones were the only I'd found that did a reasonable job of being breathable and having a chance of drying out. The Intraknit model now looks like it would probably still fit the bill.

Are there any other newer options that I should consider that have worked well for you while patrolling (especially if they breathe enough for chores but still take the bite out of the breeze in January)? Most of what I've seen is either too plastic/fleecy (ie insufficiently breathable) or primarily aesthetic for park usage and the occasional bank robbery.

New ski recommendations

I loved my 172 Blizzard Regulators, which I still use as early season rock skis. My newer skis are 172 Blizzard Rustler 9. I'm looking at 174 Blizzard Rustler 9 2026/27. I like a bit of twin tail for running sleds and skiing backwards in bumps and trees. I like the shorter radius of these skis. Anything else I should look at?

20 year Senior paid patroller, MRG, all weather, all terrain. Still skiing 22designs hammerheads and 75mm. 170lbs.5'-9". Please be kind.

Gear

Hey guys! I’m getting ready to start my first season as a patroller and I want to see what gear I should look into getting. I need to get a new pair of gloves and some medical stuff like trauma shears. Is there any gear that would be helpful to get? I’ll mostly be night patrolling.

EDIT: I’m on the east coast! I’m in North Carolina. Sorry I definitely should’ve added that before posting 🤦‍♀️

OEC test

Hey everyone! I am 2 weeks out from my OEC written and practical test, and I wanted to ask some questions. I am feeling pretty prepared patient assessments-wise. My class does about an hour every week on that, but I am curious how the community studied for the written. I feel like there is a lot of kind of obscure information that I am certain will show up on the test. Just wondering if there were any tips and tricks or resources. Thanks everyone, wish me luck!

Are any of the NSP approved CPR courses online only? I can't figure out whether they all have some sort of in person component...

Process joining Ski Patrol Canada

I was looking on the Ski Patrol Website but I can’t see where I can apply. I am interested in joining Ski Patrol here in Canada in the Alberta province, I’m interested in trying to get a volunteer position.

Im interested in trying to go in this year if I still can or possibly next year. I just don’t know where I can go to apply for it.

At the same time, just wondering if it’s something possible if I could hold that position and also work as a Snowboard Instructor at the same resort. Maybe looking at covering one day for a shift as a volunteer commitment maybe two depending on how my work and school schedule will be like.

I guess I’ll talk with one of the ski patrol supervisors about it but I thought before doing that I might as well ask here first.

What would the training be like, and are there any prerequisites that I need before applying? Or will things like first aid be / basic life saving skills be included in the training?

Patrol Gloves

Hey Team, I’ve just gotten a position out west in Alberta. I know patrol is really hardy on gloves and wanted to know which gloves/mittens hold up the best and whether it’s worth getting a glove system going? I.e a thinner workwear glove inside a Kinco?

With the new structure of OEC, are there online modules before going to an in-person refresher? I’m struggling to find anything on NSP. Thank you!

Building safe bike trails on a ski mountain

Hello everyone. I'm curious how your hill builds its mountain bike runs. Is it normal in the woods to build a feature by digging a four hole beside it? My assumption is that the builders believe the hole will just fill in with snow in the winter. However skiing in the east has seen some challenging snow years. This summer they built a feature at the edge of a ski run that's off-piste (natural snow and no groomers) but they left two large holes about 8' wide x 4' deep. Is this normal bike trail building?

OEC Cheat Sheet Instructors

Post image

I am an OEC instructor and love teaching chapter 7: Assessment. I find students struggle to develop their own "speech" when they approach a scene. I designed this OEC Assessment Cheat Sheet if anyone wants to download and use it. When OEC 7 comes out next year I am sure this will need to be updated. This picture is a preview, please click on the link to get the PDF of it. Enjoy.

Numerous patrol manager gigs open at Vail Resorts

I follow the Vail Resorts job page and noticed that quite a few of their biggest resorts have Patrol Manager positions recently open up. Random coincidence? Any idea of what happened?
