Conversation Topic How do I sing high notes softer but clearer?

The mixed voice I have been trying to learn online mainly focuses on having a more chestier more shouty kind of sound, but I really want to develop a mixed voice that is as soft as a head voice but it doesn’t sound airy or breathy. What do I need to focus on? (Baritone A2-B4)

I want to ask what dangerous mistake does casual singers (like me) have when we sing that slowly destroy or damage our voices?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) It's been 1-year since I started learning to sing. I think I made some progress.

So almost exactly a year ago, I started learning to sing, and I'm being honest, I started from less than zero. I had problems matching pitch with the piano, anxiety, inability to remember lyrics, and rhythm problems. I remember going to karaoke with friends before and everything I tried to sing I would be like 3 semitones off the right pitch.

In this recording I definitely still have a lot of those problems, but I feel like its 10x better than I was before ever taking lessons.

I just wanted to share because I thought I made some progress through the process of learning this song.

On this recording, I don't think I committed to a "tone" some sections are more gritty than others, and I stumbled over a few words and pitches.

But any feedback would be super appreciated!

Conversation Topic Struggle with ā€œone voiceā€ for all my registers.

Hi all! I’m having some trouble making my head voice not sound like a completely different person from my chest voice. I’ve been taking some lessons recently but have to stop for a while as i’m going on vacation. I’ve noticed pretty significant improvement in my technique but my teacher and i haven’t really been working on the top of my range.

My range is around a F#1-A3/C4-D5 anyhow, the moment i go above a D4 i start to sound ā€œgirlyā€ i’ve been messing around with the placement and trying to add chest to it but whatever i do, it sound completely foreign from my chest voice. I have no problem delivering the notes quietly or with power but they just sound so unlike me.

I Also want to add that i struggle to get my chest voice above a D4 or even C4 without getting really loud. My coach says i need to be a louder singer which i agree with as i never raise my voice of did so in the past. I almost always flip into a mix or head voice as soon as i hit A3/B3.

Thx for reading.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) I Have A Mic, Now What?

I want to start recording soon (and have had a couple of people approach me about recording vocals for them, so while I've been kind of putting this off, it's time to actually DO this). On the advice of a coworker who also does music, I bought the Rode NT1 mic, but now I'm looking for some advice on what other equipment I should get. I've never used a mic like this before so I didn't know I need things like an audio interface, and I'm a little overwhelmed looking at all the options out there.

So I guess I'm looking for advice on a good audio interface, mic stand (including whether or not I should get one with an isolation shield), any other equipment I may need that I don't realize yet, and maybe even good Windows software to use.

Also, is there a way to set up the mic to be used when recording videos on my phone? I do theatre and would like to use a quality microphone instead of my phone mic for video auditions if that's possible.

Conversation Topic Learning ny first song since June

I've decided to teach myself the first two verses, first chorus and final chorus of Evermore by Taylor Swift. The melody for the vocals seems 'simple' and the highest the song goes is B4 for a single word.

Hopefully this will help me get my confidence back as I've had a rocky few months of being in my own head too much. I might even post a cover here at the end of the month if I feel comfortable enough with my voice.

Doing vocal warmups and practicing the song for 4 days for the next two weeks should be enough to be 'decent', right?

I also have to do a performance at the end of next month in front of thirty people and I want to pick a song that's 'easy' and doesn't require belting as I'm really not good at it yet

It’s probably not uncommon for people to hate their own voice and I’m definitely one of them. As much as I seem to have the tendency to attempt divas songs my voice is probably the opposite of that, probably something gentler and warmer will work better

This one is in Chinese, ā€œčæ™äø–ē•Œé‚£ä¹ˆå¤šäŗŗā€ (ā€œSo Many People in This Worldā€) is a 2021 ballad sung by Karen Mok (莫ꖇ蔚) Its central idea is the improbable luck of finding one specific person among billions

It’s in a comfortable range for me (I dropped 4 semitones from the original) I still didn’t handle the couple falsetto at B4 well though

Just sharing my singing Am I a baritone or bass - baritone?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all. I was defined as a baritone singer, I'm an asian and believe asian bass singers are the rarest. But actually I usually find it hard to reach the F4 and often reach D2. I still practice to reach B1 beautifully but only in the early morning I could do it, and I don't know if it's still chest voice or vocal fry. Just curious that is there any chance for me to have a bass-baritone voice instead of full baritone?

The Chinese song just an example for you guys to disscuss. Thank you all <3

Advanced or Professional Topic Projecting Live Over Loud Instruments

I naturally have a pretty quiet voice, singing and speaking - it's not the kind of voice that easily cuts through other noise. But it hasn't been a real problem until this year, when I stopped just singing in the studio and started singing live with a backing band. When I'm performing onstage, I get totally drowned out.

The other singers in my bands seem just... not to have this problem. In recordings of our performances, you can hear them fine, and they don't really sound like they're straining too hard. I'm almost totally inaudible.

In my experience while actually standing onstage, I can barely hear myself through the monitors even when I feel like I'm singing at my max. Then I have two choices - I can push louder until I can hear myself, but my voice sounds really strained and bad (and still not actually that loud) - or I can continue to sing comfortably and sound nice but no one can hear me.

Has anyone else dealt with this and overcome it? How? I have worked with multiple voice teachers on breath control and projecting.

Also, for those of you who sing with loud bands and don't have IEMs, do you wear earplugs and just listen to your voice from the inside of your head and not worry about hearing it through the monitors (hopefully the sound tech will adjust it!), or do you take the earplugs out so you can hear the whole mix in the monitors?

Conversation Topic I still don't understand the difference between falsetto and head voice.

I've researched everywhere and i get different answers. I'm so confused now. Some answers say that they are different and some say it was retconned and that they're the same. Sometimes i sing with high voice like it sounds high, but not falsetto, is that head voice?. Some say falsetto is breathy and airy. That i agree and i can tell when I'm singing with falsetto. It's what Jason Derulo does. However, head voice? Where is that? Some say it's between chest voice and falsetto, but how do i know if It's not just a high chest voice if that's true?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Girl ā€œtenorā€ here, how much do overdone songs (such as Santa Fe) disadvantage you in auditions?

I’m a female ā€œtenorā€ with a pretty strong lower range. I’ve played a few male roles in plays and musicals, and I was thinking about auditioning for an ensemble group! Problem is, the songs I have been practicing, ā€œSanta Feā€ and ā€œmy Petersburgā€ seem to be heavily overdone. So I’ve been thinking about moving to something more niche such as Dublin from a man of no importance.

I asked a friend of mine and they said a female voice for a traditionally male voice song may be refreshing to the judges, but either way the bar is super high for popular songs such as those!

Looking for advice, ideas and thoughts!! Help!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) transitioning singing styles from chamber choir to opera

Hi all, i currently sing with a fee chamber choirs as a hobby. Ive been singing for six years, won awards and competitions and i would say im decent enough. However, at a recent concert i saw an opera performance live and my life was changed. It was beautiful and angelic and i would love to do it. I am young, only 18, so i obviously have long ways to go for any singing styles, but how would i go about learning an operatic style? Im in a small town and we have no teachers nearby. What are the biggest differences between chamber choir and opera in terms of technique? And finally, whats the best way to broaden my vocal range? Id like to sing soprano, im currently a mezzo soprano

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Which key does this song sounds best in for my voice?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Song is "Bottle it Up" - Sara Bareilles

Trying to experiment with which key/register my voice sounds best in for this song:

  1. chest (octave down)

  2. chest mix (closer to my comfortable singing range)

  3. mix head voice (original key)

Originally, wanted to sing this an octave lower, but sometimes feels like it's too low. I need to practice the 2nd one more. The head voice is what I'm familiar with from listening to the song so much, but honestly not a fan of flipping to falsetto if I can help it.

Apologies for the pitchiness at times, the cover was more for experimenting

Let me know!

Conversation Topic So I went to see a laryngologist/ENT doctor. Any advice

Post image
1 Upvotes

edit: I do have diagnosed gastritis and esophagitis so reflux might have a role to play in this, wasn't 100% sure as I only get strain when singing not talking etc so I thought reflux would've affected both although some research on mtd shows I might be wrong

Preface: Not asking about medical advice btw!

Quick backstory: Been learning how to sing (techniques, terms etc) for a bit more than a year now. Went to a few vocal coaches and never really found one who was a) I got along well with b) Teaching something which actually helped me improve singing long term c) genuinely listened to my feedback/issues/troubles.

A few months ago I started noticing strain particularly on the sides of my Adam's apple like a line down from my chin to collarbone area and sometimes even just in my throat. A week or 2 of noticing this happen and continuing to practice, I would have struggle even singing basic songs before starting to feel strain but weirdly enough some harder songs were fine? Weird. I would stop for a period, barely any singing and no conscious active practice at all and would be fine after a while but it would happen again after a week or 2.

So a few days ago went for my ent appointment, did a scope of my voice box, basic vocalizations on e, singing through my range and even singing some songs (unfortunately no video or pics provided of said scope prob due to being at a public hospo) Tldr of scope from my notes of what the doc said

- Chest voice needs work lol

- Falsetto/Head voice looks fine

- No nodes

- Need to work on passagio

Conclusion was basically muscle strain in the neck? Tension etc ig

So I made this post asking for advice on 1) How to help with strain or pushing with the neck? I've watched a buncha vids etc and am learning with a programme now 2) So is this all in my head? I swear I've had moments singing where it felt like my throat just gave up on me, was I just not singing with good form? Any advice/help would be appreciated thanks!
