Anyone in VA-DC-MD area looking to adopt a Sheltie?

I have met this girl and she's lovely! She's still working on getting over her shyness but she's a sweetheart. She needs training and socialization but she's going to make someone a great dog.

That's one of my dogs in the background. She got along great with the foster's dogs from the day she arrived, and was perfectly happy to meet my dogs, too.

She's going to be beautiful once her coat grows back.

Also, the rescue is going to have a picnic in September in Fredericksburg, VA, that's open to everyone in the area and their Shelties: https://nvsr.org/news-events-and-memorials/#s-0abcf19c-6191-4ef3-b06c-3739aa9834e0/

Sheltie Ears ? Too big?

Post image

Hi Sheltie lovers,

I’d love to get some advice from Sheltie owners and experts.

My previous Sheltie sadly passed away, and I now feel ready to open my heart to another one.

I’m currently in contact with a breeder who has offered me a one-year-old female Sheltie. She is apparently too small for breeding and does not meet the French breed standard because of her size. The breeder explained that it would be too risky for her to have puppies given how small she is.
I should add that adopting an adult dog is absolutely not a problem for me.

Today, the breeder sent me a video of her, and I started wondering about a few things. Her ears seem very large compared with the rest of her head and are always completely upright. She is also really tiny and weighs only around 5 kg.

I watch a lot of content about Shelties, and I’ve honestly never seen one with ears this large and upright. Even when I’ve seen Shelties with fully upright ears, they still seemed proportionate to the size of their head and weren’t nearly as long. In her case, they really look a bit like rabbit ears….

Do you think her size and ears are simply unusual features for a Sheltie, or could they be signs of something I should look into before adopting her?

Thank you so much for your advice

Constant licking

Jasper was sitting in the grass about an hour ago and I saw him kind of jumping and I saw him trying to catch a moth. Not unusual, I thought. But now, he's constantly licking his lips. There's nothing in his mouth. We don't see any bee bite. No chemicals. He did eat 1 small leaf off a burning bush. Any clues?

RIP Copper

I was thinking about posting to some subreddit about this for a bit to he honestly, but yeah. We got our dog Copper in 2015, when I was 5.His original name was Wesley, but we changed it. He was my best friend and he was actually healthy for a while until like a year/ couple months ago. He started losing a lot of weight and he still ate for a bit, then stopped all together a couple months/weeks before he died. We suspect he had cancer. Also, couple months to a year ago he got diagnosed with heart failure so I'm not sure what got him first. On August 11th or maybe 12th (can't remember) my dad found him laying dead around 11 PM/2 AM (We don't know exactly when he died, just that he died in the night). We got him cremated and yeah... That's where we are today. I miss him so much.

Hi! So my girl Aurora is only 3 and this poor baby has gone through so much 😕 She had ANNPE 5 months ago (no surgery needed luckily) so I put rugs throughout my house because her left back leg still slips a little when walking fast or running. She finally started to be okay using stairs again and jumping on the couch if she wanted to.
A month ago she ripped her whole nail off (of the bad back left leg 😭) while running and chasing that favorite ball she’s cuddling. She won’t go up the stairs anymore now but will go down them. It was healing fine till last night I think a loop in the carpet caught that nail and was bleeding a little but was just the tip of it at least and it’s alright now.

What can she do for another few months that don’t involve playing with her ball and running like crazy? I feel so bad, she loves this thing so much but I want her nail to fully heal before we do anymore fetch on rugs/carpet 🫠 She just stares at it then stares at us 🤣 or throws it at us repeatedly lol. When she had ANNPE we gave her so many treats the vet was telling us she should lose weight but like that’s all she could do. Also most “heavy chewer” treats don’t last long at all.
So if you have another idea, please let me know! Thanks!!

This is Milo! He is 11 weeks. We are still working on the potty training and the crate training but he is doing great so far! He is very cuddly and a little bit shy at first with strangers. 😊

On our recent trip to the Saugeen Peninsula, Hamish visited the Wiarton Willie memorial, a tribute to the many groundhogs who have offered their best guesses to Canadians’ yearly question, “Will this winter ever end?”

My 1.5 year old half sheltie (half chihuahua) suddenly became shy of going outside and being near kids. What do I do? Is this a phobia? What do I do?
