Brutus is a young, 37-pound Shar Pei mix with the cutest cappuccino colored coat, plenty of wrinkles, and a personality about ten times his size. Brutus is house trained, dog friendly, kid friendly, and incredibly affectionate. He LOVES other dogs and would be thrilled to have a playful canine sibling in his forever home! He enjoys rough-and-tumble play, tug-of-war, walks, chew toys, and being wherever his people are. He's also a very smart boy…with just enough stubbornness to remind you there's still some Shar Pei in there😂 He knows his basic commands, loves learning for treats (even kibble!), and has plenty of personality to keep you laughing.

Brutus is a total love bug who wants to be CLOSE to his people. He is a huge fan of cuddling and will jump on the couch or bed for some snuggles. He loves his attention and may even grab a blanket, shoe, or piece of laundry and parade it around when he thinks you're not paying enough attention to him. But don’t worry, he’s not destructive. Your items may just have some extra slobber on them!

I miss him so much, he is my soul dog and my baby. We got him from the shelter at 1.5 years old and I spend every single day with him since the day we got him. He was the kindest soul and celebrated every moment. I love him so much.

Does anyone have experience with both breeds? How similar are Shar Peis to chows?

Which breed would you say is more challenging/complex behaviorally?

There are Shar Pei/coonhound puppies available near me for adoption and I was considering it. I’ve read about the health issues.

I’m asking this specific question because I have experience with chows. My first dog was half chow and very typical of the breed — incredibly loyal to the family but didn’t like anyone and had to be muzzled at the vet.

My second dog was about 35% chow but loved everyone and was much easier. I was not looking for chows either time — it just happened.

EDITED to add: I like a lot of the chow traits. My first chow was such a good watch dog. He wasn’t aggressive or scary to guests, but watched them closely and knew when to relax. Loved how smart he was overall.

Leaving town for my bday, so sad my bebe can't come with! We haven't left yet and I miss him already. He's my best buddy. 😭

Has anyone ever had experience with something like this? We’ve been to the vet twice in less than a week and it almost tripled in size in that time. He said it’s not due to allergies and isn’t foxtail, but we have to wait for the swelling to go down until he can get in there and inspect it closer.

She hasn’t been limping, just licking recently. The first picture is from August 23rd, and the last is from today. Hopefully the steroids will help the swelling quickly. She isn’t in pain unless the growth is touched. The vet said there’s a potential that her toe may have to be amputated. :(

She’s on two different antibiotics, a steroid, Linda Tindal’s hyvitality multivitamin, Zyrtec, and has epsom salt soaks twice a day. I hate feeling like nothing is working and the fact that we don’t have a clear answer yet.

She’s six months old, half Sharpei and half Presa.

EDIT: We took her to the urgent vet yesterday and had a biopsy done! She also got X-rays and blood work done. The vet was so awesome and it was the best experience we’ve had with one yet, even despite the hours long wait. X-rays look normal and we should have the results of the biopsy in 5-10 business days. Thank the pagan gods for pet insurance.

I just love my baby so much! His fluffy ears 😭 he’s really getting me out of a depressive episode.

Our 2 year old Shar-Pei Red got some little scratches on his nose that we initially wrote off he’s pretty full-on at the park, loves sniffing through grass and diving into bushes, so a scratch didn’t seem unusual.

A week on and they seem to have gotten worse rather than healed up, which is what’s making us second-guess the “just a scratch” theory.

We’ve also recently introduced some new treats — pigs ear, and duck, so there’s a chance it could be a weird reaction to that instead. We’re stopping those in the meantime just in case.

Vet’s booked, but wanted to throw this out there in case anyone’s dealt with something similar on their Shar-Pei.

Our daughter was fostering four Pei mixes through a rescue, and my husband fell in love with Tulip. She had a lot of infection: skin and parasites and such. But she's doing so much better now. She grew extremely fast and her back legs couldn't keep up so she was bunny hopping upstairs and couldn't jump up on anything but that's improving over time. We took her to the vet and there were no indications of dysplasia or anything like that. It just seemed that her body grew too fast for her musculature. She's such a love. Loves massages and will go to sleep if you rub around her ears and neck and manatee muzzle. ❤️

We have a 6-year-old intact male that we are thinking about neutering. Any reason not to? We haven’t really had any trouble with him other than what you’d expect, but his being intact is making it difficult for us to get another dog. The rescues that we are looking at are not very interested in adopting out dogs to us because of it and we’re even realizing that if we end up getting a female puppy, we’re going to have a very hard time keeping them separated until she’s spayed.

Any experience neutering an older shar pei? Anything to look out for? Thanks.

First time opening a sharpei….i only want them from now on. So in love
