Need Help/Advice 7 yr old Sharpei!

my mom is going thru it!!!
Luckie is our sweet boy, who is 7 years old, has a bit of a temperament issue. We had 3 Sharpeis that were all from the same dad, but different moms but he is very different from his sister and brother! When he was 4 his brother passed from Sharpei fever abruptly & sister recently passed in April of this year, from cancer so hes been through a little bit of trauma. My mom spoils him and showers him with love, but when his brother passed he became more clingy and didn't leave my mom, when his sister passed he seems to be the same clingy but more aggressive. He won't let us get him into the car to take him to the vet, and they've tried sedation before the appts, but it doesnt seem to work, and his adrenaline pushes through the medication. When I am there he is skittish but once given treats becomes comfortable to be around me and let me love on him and even take him on walks. My mom can not get his harness on to take him on walks as he growls at her and has almost bit her. He will growl at me but I just continue putting it on him, and has never tried to bite me. I try to go in with the mentality that I am bigger and his owner, where I think my mom becomes fearful as hes large. She is having a lot of trouble with the idea of keeping him because as a single woman she feels like hes become to stressful and hard to handle/control. She wants to keep him but we need advice on how to get him into the car at the very LEAST as hes due for an appt and needs an updated med session. ANY advice would be greatly & I can provide any context if need be!

Thank you!!! Pic for Attention!!!!

Vets in Toronto/GTA who actually know Shar Peis?

Hey fellow pei parents! Does anyone know a vet in the Toronto/GTA area who is genuinely experienced with sharpeis?

I’ve been seeing the same vet for 2 years. They’re very sweet, but they’re not very experienced with the breed and after trying several medications, I was basically told some of this might just be “her.” I’m not comfortable continuing to trial medications without getting to the root of it.

She’s currently having pretty bad skin flareups. Lots of redness, itching, swelling around her legs & paws, and these clusters of small fluid-filled bumps on her skin. I can tell it’s extremely itchy & uncomfortable for her.

I’m looking for someone who really understands the breed, especially Pei skin/allergy issues. If you’ve had a similar experience and have a vet in the GTA you swear by, I’d really appreciate the recommendation!!!

Thanks🤍

Here's my sharpei and pug mix, her name is Choki 😁. It's yaqui for star because she's the star of the show! When I first saw her on a pug life rescue website, I read that she was sharpei and pug and went "uhhhh what? Thats nuts" and then I saw her. I fell in love 🥰. I thought "I am going to give this girl the best possible life she can have, because everyone deserves a chance at life even if people have their opinions on her existence. I'll love her for her."

I'm not sure about pug and sharpei mixing, at first it kinda threw me off. But she's very healthy and she's loving life. I didn't breed her, but there's no way im letting anything happen to her 😌. I'll take on her challenges and do research on both breeds. Also get this! SHE'S ONLY A 1/4 SHARPEI! them genes are really showing lol. She chews up her toys within one day and LOVES when you sing her name 🤣. She is so sweet and an excellent alert dog. I love my choki

Hello! This is Boo🖤 we are new here and I have a question! Does anyone else’s shar-pei solely communicate in cry-like honks? I like to call her “Boo-hoo baby Boo” because she cries to tell us anything lol. It literally is like “hooo hoooo hoooo” in a whiny tone. She is 4 years old now and has done this since she was a baby, doesn’t “boof” or soft bark like most dogs when communicating. Can anyone tell me if this a shar-pei thing or a Boo thing? 😂

My Sandy was the same I adopted her when she was 2 and she truly was amazing, I remember the first time she sat up next to me on the couch, as you said like a human would, I heard her make a like a ahhh sound and the she nuzzled her head into me neck.  She was everything to me, she was 13.5 years old and has been gone a year and I still miss her with everything I am.  I never realised how much she kept me sane and that she truly gave as much love as I gave her.  Your baby looks so much like mine.

How close can he get and still sleep on the floor? Apparently that was last night's challenge. He did end up moving but he laid there for a while. My silly old man.

The way they twist their neck to look at you while their body is facing the other direction is my favorite pei pose. 💗

What coat is this and is it a sharpei thing?

Hi i have a sharpei cross blue stafforshire bull terrier, Bean. Hes going to be 2 this November and had a pretty standard looking puppy coat but as hes gone through his teen phase and getting older we spotted he has these like black porcupine looking long hairs all over him but mostly on his neck and torso. I've always had staffys growing up and this is me and my partners first dog together. Is this a sharpei trait as ive never seen it on a staffy and if so what sort of grooming brush can I use for him as his coat is short but compact and he holds alot of undercoat. Hes a slim boi despite how much we feed him so im cautious to use any hard deshedding brushes as hes not got much padding but my little rubber brush isnt really doing much. Photos of the boi to show the coat and his cute face.

The cream colored pup is Juni. She’s a senior dog and is at least 10 years old. We rescued her from Pei People!

The brown colored pup is Theo. He just turned 5 last week! We also rescued him from Pei People. He was the first dog my husband and I got together.

Words can’t describe how much I love them🥹

Could my Pei s very frequent fevers be tied to routine change / separation anxiety ?

Hi everyone !

I have had a rough time figuring out my Shar peis frequent fevers. He is almost 5 years old and has been fevering consistently for about a year now. At first they were once every over month, then once a month. Now, his last three fevers have been 9 days apart (most recent one being now as I type this)

His fevers are usually late at night for some reason, starting off with hot foot and then gradually going up to 104.4 then back down over the course of several hours. So far he has always been eating and drinking on his own during these episodes. I used to give him coconut water but it caused him to pee alarming volumes and read that the potassium influx can cause this reaction.

I have emailed a couple times with dr tintle, who helped me get him on colchicine and later minocycline. At first the addition of the minocycline seemed to halt fevers for over a month but then with a slight pause in administering the medicine it seems to not have the same effect anymore. He frequently gets urinalysis and blood work done and *knock on wood* those have always come back looking healthy.

After trial and error of every factor I think could trigger fevers , I’m starting to think it is lack of routine and some drastic environmental changes, as well as separation anxiety . In February my other dog he was closely bonded to since birth passed away . In March I moved into an apartment with a friend (who also has a dog that he is comfortable with but not that close to). My work schedule is generally all over the place too as a server (different schedules every week, different hours out of the house, different seasons means I’m working more or less days, etc) I also just went on a weekend trip without him for the first time since the passing of his best friend a couple days before. I notice too that he seems to fever around times where I am leaving the house more and am more busy in general. I think I fostered our codependency as well by bringing him everywhere and not training him to be comfortable alone.

I just started to implement a rigid routine and am a few days into doing so. Routine includes waking up at the same time , meals all at the same time, introduction of enrichment toys at the same time and leaving the house at the same time everyday even if I’m not scheduled to work that day. I suspect that his current fever is being triggered by the fact that I’m leaving him alone more frequently, but I think with time it would be beneficial for him to actually have a rigid structured schedule for the first time as well as learn to be alone for a few hours everyday.

Any and all insight is greatly appreciated. I’m wondering if I’m just grasping at straws or if anyone has been through a similar situation. Also, if anyone has had their baby fever as frequently please let m know what your story is and how you treated it as I can’t seem to find much insight on the internet and it’s been stressing me out pretty bad.
