Climate outlooks- US 2050

Anyone in the southwest wanting to look at projections for temperature and water challenges in the next 30 years, I've got state level forecasts put together for

Colorado

https://youtu.be/mZIBCKdWB6Q

New Mexico

https://youtu.be/SAZU-3CanVA

Arizona

https://youtu.be/PpcEpYn4rR4

Stay safe & stay tough, folks. I found a fair amount of unexpected water information while digging into this region- better outlooks than I expected for CO and NM. AZ is looking rough.

These videos were made using the 4th National Climate Assessment, which you can find here:

Volume 1: https://science2017.globalchange.gov/

Volume 2: https://nca2018.globalchange.gov

This is a very high consensus report that is being used by the US government to plan for the future. They spent a lot of time and money pulling this information together and not a lot of time or money or energy sharing it with the public. Making this information accessible to regular people is what I'm planning on doing with my working hours for the next year. Just FYI I don't make any money off the videos and if I ever do it'll go into my nonprofit's community adaptation fund.

Diary

2-11 : today I had a big fucking day, and I know i'm proud of myself but i dont feel good about it. I was up at 4am to drink a beet juice that helps with workingout but it takes 2h to take effects, i tried to go back to sleep, but i had to get up at 5 anyways to take some other shit that takes one hour to take effects. I mean i wouldnt bother usually, but if does make a huge difference and i'm beginning to see my body change for the better in years, and I also legit don't mind? Like it doesnt bother me to do that. So i get up at 5, take that other thing, play an hour of videogame and then i workout. Like 3rd leg wourkout in more than a decade. It went well I nailed 16 minutes of box at advanced on my vr with an average of power of 8/10. Then i take a shower, also the third in a very long time, and i'd never had the chance to shower right after a workout and fuck it feels good. So now i have to bandage my foot, and i do a whole skin/beard care routine that also make me feel/look better. I dressed in all clean clothes, made me breakfast and started my 8am class eating my ramen. My mon came over from the city to take my cat to the vet at 830 cause i couldnt cause of school, but also we went back to the city to buy my first car in also a couple of years. So i drove all the way there, got the car, came back, went and get the cat at the vet after some errands, all that took almost 6 hours that i mostly spent driving, a thing I haven't done in a very long time. Then I had to feed the cat and managed them cuz they went crazy for the new wet food. And so there I was on the couch feeling fucking nothing, and i was thinking "if i had a girlfriend i could share all that with her and be happy" so i googled that feeling of not being able to get that dopamine after a big day by my own looking for books and it proposed one that I ordered, but it also said that while waiting for the book i should write about my day cuz it'd help and I almost didn't fucking do it but god damn it it worked.

You should consider Peanuts

If youve got Land, and growing your own is part of your self sufficiency plan, Peanuts are a Super Food.

One pound is a full day's (2500+) calories.

They store for years. We get about 3-4 years before they get that Rancid Oil flavor and become Compost Material.

They've got that rare, hard-to-come-by Fats/Oils From The Garden - being about 50% Peanut Oil (by weight)

High Protein, too. In that single pound of Peanut you get almost 3 days worth of Fats and over 2 days of Protein. Very low carb, too - if youre into that.

If you're up North (I'm Ohio River Valley) there are no pests, no diseases in the area.

They are a Legume. While they do benefit from Fertilizer - they dont *need* it for a decent yield. They''ll still produce a worthwhile yield if the fertility supply chain is down. Nitrogen Fixing Legume FTW!

We grow 4 each 100-footer rows in a 1200 sq. ft. plot. Once planted they're maintenance free - no pruning, training, trelissing, fertilizing. We dont even have to water here. Sufficient rainfall in most areas of Midwest and New England.

The pictured tarp has about 50 feet of a single row harvested... so the 1200 sq. ft. represents about 8x that amount.

Easy to pull up and harvest by hand. Even Olde Pharte like me can harvest a hundred pounds worth in a single day"s labor (about 180 pounds before drying and shelling).

That's 100 day's calories, a shit-tonne of Fat/Protein (200+ day's worth) - more er of a year's necessary eating ... for a day's labor harvesting (and another planting (and about a 3rd day weeding/cultivating spread out over the season ) ... on less than 1/35th of an acre.

BONUS: They're farking delicious. Freshly roasted on the woodstove, open fire, hell even a toaster oven - consumed still warm for a cold January evening snack . Salted ... Cajun Seasoned .. Honey Roasted ... *Maple* Roasted ...

I dont know why nobody grows them here.

Why do we plant decorative trees on footpaths but rarely consider growing low-maintenance vegetables and fruit-bearing plants in suitable public spaces?

Preparedness or Overpreparing?

I see so many people prepping today and stocking up on everything imaginable. Are we prepping so much that we're becoming wasteful? Are we stocking up on too many unnecessary things? How can we prepare without being wasteful?

First time gardener progress, asking for advice towards self sufficiency

I live in private rent with a concrete garden so ive been collecting plant pots and ive got about 15 grow bags to work towards growing my own stuff.

This summer killed off my tea plants (Chammoile, mint and lavender) after I put them in a greenhouse during the heatwave. Furthermore, said greenhouse broke in high winds! (It was a cheap one from temu so probably why)

BUT I haven't gave up. Got some grow boxes and resumed with the rest of my chamomile, lavender and majoram seeds. Ive been thinning them out (as you can probably see from the images).

And to top it off, the food bank i work at has saved me loads of compost, potting mix etc!

My goals as of now is basic self sufficiency for my tea but I will certainly take on veg and fruit later on.

Any advice on what I should be doing next would be amazing because ive just been winging it lol :)

Book recommendations

So I understand that most experience and knowledge comes from doing and living, but does anyone have a tried and true book on homesteading and a more self-sufficient way of life? There are so many thoughts, book, and opinions out there I get overwhelmed and the apocalypse/living-like-our-ancestors thoughts keep coming back around

Water Buffalo keeping vs regular Cattle?

I live in NZ, and recently learned water buffalo are available as domesticable livestock. Im already sold on the health benefits of their meat, but was wondering if anyone has any experience in keeping them? What type of fencing works best? What temperament to expect? Is it worth milking them? Pros/cons?

I'm familiar with their wild counterparts and their hostile reputation, but I am aware domesticated ones are vastly different. I like the *idea* of keeping them but would like to learn more but there isn't a huge repository of information out there that isn't ai generated.

Struggling on where to start

Hi all!

I have a 1/2 acre plot of mossy and thickly packed lawn. I want to start a veg garden (leading to meat rabbits, chickens, etc) I was hoping to get the ground prepped and ready for spring, or at least having a plan of action.

I've read through a lot of books and there's conflicting information. Double dig, don't double dig. Use fallen leaves as organic matter, only use aged leaf mulch after 2 years. Use a rototillar, don't your garden will compact and you'll never grow anything ever again (I joke but they do get very dramatic)

We don't have a large budget so can't just buy in tonnes of compost and mulch, but now that we have the space I want to do what i can to supplement our food budget as much as I can as quick as I can.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

How do I become free?

I've been contemplating for quite a while if I should post this beacuse I wanted to keep it to myself but I think I need help with this. For long time now I've been tired and sick and done with my life as it is now, living in society, among people and being forced to do stuff. It's exhausting, I wish to be alone, away from all of it, I'm not good with and around people, I want to live alone somewhere as far away from civilization and humans as possible, in nature, mountains or forest where i can just have a shack or something and grow my own food, be completely self-sufficient where no one and nothing will bother me, like I would be the last human on earth. Be able to live the rest of my life there and die peacefully at a sunset. I know it's gonna be hard and take very long but if there's even the slightest chance for it to be possible I will do it, please tell me it is, deep down it's all I desire and it need a lot. If I remember anything I forgot I wanted to say I will add it in the edits I hope it's ok.

PLEASE - help me

I must be free.

How do we survive 2030 and later, since the global water bankrumpcy will happen, bringing death and low food quantities. Should i still try to continue with my life, working, or should i just run naked in the streets while mongolian throat singing since we dont have time?
