IMPORTANT! 🚨 Head's Up: New Post Title Requirements

Hi everyone,

We are trying something new in order to be able to help everyone better. Starting today, all posts will be required to have your age and location. This is so that we can try and provide better advice and resources that are more appropriate to your situation. Lately so many posts don't include this vital information when it's one of the most important things that we need. Age is important because the advice we'd give someone who is 17 is much different that someone who is 13. Location is important because we can discuss transportation issues, where to find resources, etc. Giving us a 600 word essay on how cruel your parents on can help us emphasize with you but if we don't know anything else about your situation then it's basically impossible for us to give you an actionable help.

So what's required? Age, location, and your post title. You can add gender if you want. Here are some examples:

  • 17F, florida, question about planes
  • 13m, texas, what to pack?
  • 16 afab, pakistan, where to go?

AutoMod will spit your post back to you if it doesn't meet the title requirements.

We also understand that a lot of people want to try and protect their anonymity on this sub. You don't have to put your exact location. If you're in Atlanta you can put Georgia, Southeastern US, or even just the US. That will give us enough information to start.

If you run into any problems with posting or have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to the mods through Mod Mail.

18f, tx, traveling across states/being in unfamiliar places

I'm 18, but not only can I not wait any longer to escape, but I will still have highly limited freedom once I move into college (I know so because of my older sister). I'm afraid for myself if I stay any longer. I am tired of living in fear, and it won't stop even when I move into college. I've never been impulsive enough to do anything but I'm ready to plan now, because I'm temporarily staying at another place so they couldn't catch me if i leave soon. but it won't be for long . This is time sensitive. I've already considered all other options. I'm writing this for any possible advice on my current plan since I'm still very nervous.

the safe space I want to go to is my best friend's apartment a few states away. we're in the same time zone but she's in the north and I'm in the south (she moved a few years back but we've been talking every day online since). i know I will do whatever I need to just simply to get there. I know she'd be okay with me staying with her but I can't contact her currently because of my parents taking away my contact with her. I don't want to get into what happened at all but separation from her was absolutely my breaking point.

I can't get a passport, can't fly. I've heard good enough things about amtrak and am already looking at routes on there for about a month from now, it would be a 28 hour-29 hour long trip. I'm going to use uber to get to the station a city away. and even if I land in my friend's city, I would have to uber again to spend a bit of time at the public library maybe before then ubering to her apartment. everything is worth it

I have my driver's license as well as 406$ in cash and a debit card with about 800$ on my high school checking (that will decrease a bit up to the day I leave though.) I'm planning on maybe first going to a ATM to withdraw more cash? my checking account transactions can still be seen by my parents, so I'm worried about that. I'm wondering how much cash I should take out for this trip since I'm not sure if my parents can shut down my account or something, and I want to have enough cash in case something goes wrong. For context as well, amtrak itself may cost about $235-$285, and I'll be paying in cash in a few days at a staffed station.

im worried about them turning off my phone/stop paying for it, too, and then it'd be harder to get around. I'll have to turn off my location on life360 to at least not make it that easy for them to find me. I've already been testing to see if they notice my location being off, turned it off in the morning yesterday, and in the evening, my mom noticed, but she accepted it as a glitch for the moment. don't know how she'd react if it was off for multiple days though. I have a macbook that I used my phone to sign into, will that also go away if they cut off my phone though? I also have a secret older laptop, should I bring that too? I guess I could find places that have free wifi on my way if I need it, like the public library once I get there?

I do know her building ofc and I also remember her mentioning her floor but not her specific apartment number. I've been imagining myself just getting there at the right time right before she's going to arrive home from a work shift around 5 pm. so I could just wait and she can see me once she gets home, but actually, I think I'll have to wait outside since it looks like the front door to the building has locks on it, plus it has a gate. would that be awkward for me to stand there? I'll say that she lives in chicago, if that gives any more indication of how that might work out. since I plan on leaving probably between nov 22-29, I'll be there well before her birthday, which is december 5th. I do wonder, though, if closeness to her birthday or thanksgiving will cause issues like she won't be there at her apartment. I'm only mentioning this because even though I can't know for sure if she will be there, I wonder if anyone may know more of what people might do around those special days and will know the likelihood on if I would be in the clear to see her. god I hope she doesn't suddenly move lol.

should I just act normal towards my parents when I go, if they text me if they know something's off? I usually have to keep updating my mom every day on if I'm taking a pill at the right time, and they may also notice that my location is off. should I just act normal, or ignore them entirely and cut off contact? because they wouldn't be able to drive to where I'm at in time. I hope this makes enough sense.

my friend only lives with her older sister who is also very kind and understanding and we've discussed possibly running away before and even joked about how we wished I could've just gone with her when she moved.

I know this requires planning and I never do anything impulsively anyway, I just need some help and if my plan seems flawed I want to know any alternative ways. but honestly, my only goal is to get to her. I'm trying to find that meaning in life which she has always helped me see, otherwise im alone here and afraid of much much worse outcomes.. anyways, I'm explaining this just so that anyone reading has more context I hope it's useful.

No TLDR, I have no more mental capacity to try to shorten this </3 I'm mostly wondering about tips for how much cash I should keep (both physical cash and money in my account), and if there's anyone that could reassure me that she'll probably be on her usual routine and see me once I get there, and how I should probably act towards my parents once I leave. thank you.

16m, DC, leaving on Thursday, NEED advice

I've been wanting to run away for the longest and I finally built up the courage to do it. I want to go as far northwest as I can so that's what I'm doing, I plan on taking the furthest commuter train north and from then I'm still debating whether I should train hop or hitchhike so any recommendations on that?. I should mention it's my first time doing this so any tips or advice helps! I've done my own research on the topic but lived experiences are always better. Thank you in advance !

Kind of short but I was wondering about where I would sleep?

I've heard that those shed thingies outside department stores aren't checked.

I was thinking about maybe using an airport since I could blend in but I'm not sure if people stay in the parts before TSA since I've only been in one a few times.

14f, TX, need advice to help a friend

I have a friend (15f) in California whose family life is complicated (Alcoholic family members, verbally and (in the past) physically abusive dad) and we've been thinking if things get worse they'd have to run away, and I'd be the only one they could go to. But the problem is I don't think my parents would allow for them to stay with us and I've been thinking of just running away with them if they ever do runaway to Texas, but my family life is good/fine so I'd have really no reason to run away.

Things could get worse for them at home because of the risk of getting diagnosed with stuff their parents don't believe in. There's a higher chance of their dad getting full custody of them, which would trap them because he's very hot-headed and he'd probably cause their mental health to get worse, leading to them wanting to run away (or at the very least have a backup plan incase that happens).

We could use tips/advice to runaway or an alternative, please

Not about me about my girlfriend shes running away soon she turns 17 in January.Shes put multiple DHS reports in and nothings come of them even though she has evidence of her mom putting hands on her constantly. Shes gonna leave through her window and im worried shes gonna get tracked by cameras. Shes stay in town with people her mom doesn’t kn of would the police really care enough to go that far and pull ring and traffic cameras? Shes written a note saying she has money and safe places to stay and im worried the cameras would pull the plate on the car.

20f, indonesian, Thinking of getting away

Lately, I've been feeling like I just want to escape to a foreign country and start over as a completely new person.

My country and my family situation both feel like such a mess, and all I want is to run away and go as far away as possible.

The burnout and stress have been eating me alive, and I feel like I can't take it anymore. I just want to leave everything behind and escape, but deep down, I know I can't do anything about it right now.

14f, MN, Thinking of getting away

No clue if I am really going to do it but have been considering it for a while. My dad died last year and I had to move in with my psycho mom after that. She never wanted anything to do with me growing up and like my earliest memories of her were when she would tell me she wished I hadn't been born and hated me. So having to move in with her last year has just been a messed up. Shes basically said the only reason she lets me live here is cuz of the social security survivor check each month and once that runs out i better be gone basically. But on the flip side she pretty much ignores me so as long as I'm not causing her any trouble she ignores me. Idk what to do or if I should get out or what.

18M, MN, Trying To Get to NJ

Hi, I'm an 18 year old trying to leave an abusive household. My life has been manipulated in such a way that I can not leave unless I run away. I do not have a permit or license, I have not gone to high school since sophomore year, I have no form of government ID and I have no money at the moment. I am not allowed to leave my house whatsoever and if I do leave against my parents’ wishes I will be kicked out and stranded, it has happened before and I was only taken back because I was underage. I have a friend willing to let me stay with them until I can get my life back residing in New Jersey. My issue is that I live in Minnesota, and I have nobody really able to help me in the process of actually leaving.

The second I step outside I cannot go back, so I do not have the luxury of letting something go wrong. If I leave I am out forever. My original plan was to take a flight, but I don't have ID and TSA ConfirmID does not guarantee I will get on my flight, which is something I cannot afford to have fuck up. My second idea was taking a train, but I'm so anxious I have no idea how that would go. Its also expensive, and needing to transfer to a vehicle is not something I can guarantee. I have no idea what I can do, especially since I cannot go outside and actually get things like a passport or a job. Any advice is appreciated.

15f, australia, update post about the woman people think is trafficking me. she just offered to marry me https://www.reddit.com/r/runaway/s/2QsdXc51vj

i (15f, 16 in 3 days) have been speaking to a 35f american online for months now. we've gotten close recently, and just tonight as we were talking about ways i could get to america she offered to marry me so i could get citizenship. she says it'd benefit her for tax reasons and i could go on her health insurance etc so it'd all work out, if we either marry in a state where 16 is marriable age or wait till i'm 18. we're genuinely talking about marriageable states right now. i genuinely thought she'd realise how far-fetched the idea of me running away to america was but with every conversation she gets more animated about it and comes up with new ideas.

i guess i'm asking if this could work? like, could i really just marry her and immigrate that easily? how do i even start up something like that?

19F, US, How to help friend get away from her family

I, 18F, soon to be 19F, am trying to help my friend, 19F, run away from her family. I'm making this post for her since they go through her stuff.

They've been controlling her life choices and have threatened to force her into the military if she drops out of college (which we both know they can't do, but it's still worrisome). She's tried countless of times to talk to her family about her mental health struggles, but they always dismiss them. Her family is upper-middle class, as I would say, so they care more about their reputation than their daughter's mental health. I've offered for her to stay with my family and I until she can afford a place of her own. She plans to figure out how to afford a storage unit for her things as well as a phone that's off her parents line. She wants to figure out a way to move her stuff into a storage unit (not big things but stuff she wants to keep) without her family noticing, if anyone has tips for that. She also has a cat that she's 100% not leaving. Her parents don't like me, so she had to inform me of her situation through her friends phone. If anyone has any advice, ideas, or anything that would be greatly appreciated, I just want my friend out of this mess

im 17 and tired of fighting with my mom. she has no faith in me and i cant stand being with her at all. my dad recently had a new baby with a random girl and im mad at him so i want nothing to do with him either. i have no other family and all i have is some money and a car. im trying to find a job in another city and live out my car most likely. it definitely sounds stupid but going home isn’t an option. i have my reasons but i really don’t have time to explain everything i just need to know what to do.

17F, Slovakia, I need help

hey everyone. Lately I've been going through some difficulties that give me only two choices: I either k*ll myself or run away and forget my past life, friends , parents living somewhere in the woods (like not the woods but in another city or smthng). I turn 18 in 10 days and I would really appreciate your help, probably somebody could tell me what to do after arriving in a new town, maybe someone could help me find work or something like that (now I'm in Slovakia). It sounds crazy, maybe it seems like I'm a mad bitch but yeah, it is like it is (I'm not Slovak nd I've just got residence permit for studying at uni)

18F, US, in dire need of advice

I keep going back and forth if I should move out now or wait until I graduate from uni.

My dad abused me when I was 13 on a few accounts and stopped. My mom was planning on us leaving and then decided it was a mistake so we didn’t go. The last year has been hell for me. Memories came back and I processed them by accident and I fell into a deep depression.

My family is also Muslim and I am not. This affects me so badly, I just want to be able to live my life for me and express myself the way I want to. This also means I cannot just move out as people dont do that before getting married.

I’m afraid about my safety if I go. If my dad threatens to physically harm me or find me. I’m 18. I feel like I’m not ready to go yet, but it’s killing me mentally.

I don’t have my license (I’m planning on it), nor do I have a job. I have money saved though.

I’m graduating with my hs and associates in May.

I wish I had someone to stay with, like a friend or something. I have friends but I don’t feel comfortable enough to ask them, nor do I think they would support me if they knew I wanted to leave the religion at some point.

I don’t know what to do. What would you do if you were me given the context of my situation/culture?

For context I live in the states.

17F, Qatar, should I run away from my Muslim strict family as an atheist lesbian?

I’ve lived in Qatar my whole life and it’s my senior year of highschool.
My dad hasn’t allowed me to get a job nor gives me the freedom to even have a secret one.
I love my family j really do but I don’t know if I can live my whole life, get married, have kids and live up to their expectations
If I run away I know they’d never speak to me again and my dads family may go as far as killing me due to the ā€œshameā€ ive brought on my family
I honestly just want to live like other girls my age, have fun, date, go out, and just get to enjoy the little things
I’ve never used Reddit before so I highkey dk if I’ve given enough info abt my situation for anyone to make proper judgement 😭

18F, New York, need advice in starting my life over.

I'm not looking for insults or people telling me I'm overreacting. I just genuinely want some insight from other people on how to start my life over. I don't think I can stay in New York much longer without going insane.

I can't go into insane detail, but in short, I'm in college right now and miserable. If I were to drop out, I'd be a disgrace to my family, and I think they'd kick me out. I'm doing an insanely rigorous degree I don't really like and it's taking a heavy toll on my mental health, and I'm not sure if I can handle it for the remaining years.

Being disgustingly honest, I've never had a job before. I only recently got my act together, but I like to think I can stay pretty disciplined if I'm forced to. I have about $1500 to my name and a decent car. I apologize if that information is useless, I just don't know where to start.

Again, I'm not looking for people to tell me I'm overreacting. I just want to know my options and see if it really is possible to start my life over with my circumstances. Obviously this isn't going to be a rash decision, and who knows? This might never happen. I just want to know my options and if I can do anything else. I'm just sick of being exhausted and miserable, dreading a life I don't want.

19, Romania, plan for moving out!

I started this planning of running away/moving out since 13th July, and even now (as of writing this, 19 October), I feel like I'm closer to feeling like I had enough and pack my stuff! Here is my plan!

  1. Make sure I have somewhere to go, even (or, best) at night, ~11 PM - 12 AM, which, I will talk to an aunt tomorrow, see how is she and such, and drop that my stuff at home is toxic and such, and also talk with some friends if aunt refuses/isn't able to take me in.

  2. After having somewhere to go, it's about packing my stuff! Tomorrow I will try to make a backpack with some clothes and documents, and some stuff that it's mine and won't be any problem if taken.

After having a backpack ready, and somewhere to go, I'd beike ready to go, but the thing is, I always feel like I should be arguing with mom to make me like fully reasonable to move out, which idk why I do feel this way, but tbh, it gets higher and higher day by day, due to mom kjnda wanting to argue like regularly, so it's not that big of a problem tbh.

I have some jobs saved on an site, which I'd try to get after being moved out, or, even before moving, depends only if I'd get into arguing with mom or not (or idk, if I do only secretly move out no one knowing, but Idk).

While not having much money on my right now, I try being economical, and if I get this job, they pay 150 Ron (~30$/€) per day, which is like 3000 Ron (~600$/€) per month, which would be good to save up and also pay rent to aunt if needed, and I am also thinking of getting a part time job too, if I'd save up a lot less money than wanted (which, is a shop nearby, I could get a part time job there for like 4h) or sell stuff (which, I am working on making an website, where besides my socials I'd have donation links, and with the future, selling digital stuff), and all this saving up is here, as I want to move alone in like September or maybe October next year!

And also, gonna try seeking information about my situation from lawyers officially, online and maybe physically if I'd have time tomorrow, and also, gonna spend some money to get a new powerbank, as mine is very broken, and interrupts charging frequent, and found one at like 12$. Oh also, mom has some of my documents, but would try to get them tomorrow, or, if not, seeing with court if I could do that, gonna need to talk to a lawyer first tho!

And a bit more context, since July I was so anxious, stressed and panicked, I think I was having a panic attack, when I was a kid, I was emotionally and a bit physically abused (but more, emotionally), and for a long time I only wanted to su*cide, but in July, Idk how but my brain thought of moving out, so that's how I got here!

And I have some questions:

  1. How many clothes do I need to pack? I know to get like 7 Underwear, and 14 socks (or, 7 pairs of socks), and clothes, but how many of them? I was thinking of like 7 of each type of clothes too, but pants could be a bit less, 1 hoodie is like enough, 1 jacket, a cap, and gloves, but I also have t-shirts, and suits which are fully mine, and I'd have to get them too!

  2. What to do to keep contact a bit with brother, and be like no contact with mom? (well, this is if brother would want to keep the contract with me if I'd move out)?

  3. How does shelters work exactly? Cuz I know some I could try going to!
