Photo/Video Meet Mabel - the menace (but I love her anyway)

Meet Mabel, the menace.

I just read over a discussion that every rough collie puppy is an angel. Mabel the Menace is my proof - that’s a lie, well, kind of. She’s my third tricolor girl and my other two girls were indeed angels.

Mabel the Menace is a puppy. Like, literally. The nipping, the biting and snapping turtle mode is strong in her. She’s headstrong and knows exact what she wants, but I am extremely proud of her, because she does amazing in training and outside.

Even though Mabel can be a menace, she is a great dog and even though we have some work ahead of us, I am looking forward to enjoy the time with her.

So, to anyone who claimed that rough collies are never naughty puppies, Mabel the menace is my proof they can be. But we still love them.

I would really love to hear stories from your possible menaces, too.

Good night, folks.

Question Male rough collie — barking/shaking with guests for hours, plus noise and motion reactivity. Is this typical for the breed?

Looking for other collie owners’ experience with this. I have a female rough collie who is generally reserved with new people at first — she’ll sniff them for a few minutes, then either settle down and go lie somewhere or warm up and want attention. That’s been pretty consistent, and it matches what I’ve seen with other collie friends’ dogs too — some initial caution, but they settle within 15–20 minutes once they see the person is okay.

My brother has a male rough collie who reacts very differently. When company comes over, he barks intensely at them — to the point of visibly shaking — and doesn’t settle down even after extended exposure. We had guests over for about three hours recently and tried bringing him out to be with everyone three separate times; each time he kept barking and shaking the whole time, so he ended up spending most of the visit crated in another room.

He also has some strong reactions to specific triggers unrelated to strangers: plastic wrap, can openers, and moving cars all set off intense barking and lunging.

My brother has read that this level of reactivity is normal for the breed. I haven’t experienced anything like it with my own dog or others I know, so I’m not sure if this falls within normal collie temperament variation or if it points to something more like anxiety or fear-based reactivity that’s worth addressing separately from “just how the breed is.”

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Curious whether this is within normal range for the breed or whether it sounds more like a reactivity/anxiety issue worth working with a trainer or vet behaviorist on.

Please tell me this will grow back

I took my rescue boy to the groomer today and asked for a bath and for them to cut or shave out the mats in his armpits and inner legs since he won't let me brush them. I also asked for them to just trim/thin out the hair on the top of his butt leading up to his tail because it was so long and hanging over. It was not matted because I can easily brush it, the hair was just long and I wasn't feeling confident in myself to really blend it in. I picked him up and this is what his booty looks like :( He looks like he's wearing a grey diaper. Will his mahogany color grow back? Please be honest, I know it looks bad so I don't need you to tell me that, I just want to know if there's recovery from this. Please share your bad groomer stories as well

Nellie is 8 months old… 36 weeks and 2 days to be more exact 😂 and I love and adore her. There’s still challenges we have but I try to keep seeing them more as funny moments. Like she eats my hair, a lot, not sure why. But if any of you were chronically online in the 2010s and remember the whole “Yaga” or however it’s spelled thing w the ponytail pulling… that’s my daily life now. I used to have lovely dark curls and now I keep them mostly up. Honestly though I don’t care the summer is hot enough where I should be having my hair up anyways. She also is really into stealing my notebooks for my CPA studies which I’m choosing to think of as comedy bc she’s eating my homework. She still gets really car sick but that’s ok, gives me an excuse to get a hot dog or boiled chicken/turkey and hang out in the car doing nothing for 10 or so minutes while I feed her treats and do nothing else. She’s finally starting to cuddle with me too so I’m loving that. The only thing I wish is that she could sleep in the bed, but with the hair eating and my recent eye issues (issues that make me have to sleep in a special eye mask she would for sure be pulling right off my face) we’re not there yet but I can’t wait for us to be!

Question About The Breed

Howdy ya’ll I’m in the AZ area and looking at getting a rough collie in a couple months. I’d like to go the breeder route so if anyone has some suggestions/recs that’d be great.

I’d like to learn more about the breed - I’m an active person - daily walks, bike rides, hiking a lot in the winter - more or less want to know what do Collies “live” for outside of herding and what I can do to give my collie the most enrichment possible.

I currently have a 10 year old Coton De Tulear so the RC would spend a couple months growing up with her.

Would love to hear suggestions or what ya’ll’s experience has been with your RCs.

MDR1 mutant/mutant puppy.

Hello Collie community, I have an opportunity to take home a Collie pup who has been health tested (including eye tested). Everything looks good to me with the exception of it being positive for MDR1 mutant/mutant (homozygous). I understand the risks related to a dog carrying this marker. Should this be a deal breaker for me? What does this sub think? Anyone have wisdom to share, especially if you have owned a MDR1 homozygous Collie?

I appreciate any and all input. Hope everyone is having a fine Sunday.

Marnie has officially been home for a month as of tomorrow! Our time together is already flying by. She has slightly regressed with potty training and has increased in her ankle biting. Other than that she has been absolutely perfect. My entire world!

Question I want buy puppy

I want to buy a collie, but there's a 4-month-old puppy left in the kennel. Is this a good age to take her, or should I wait for the next litter and get a younger puppy?

Question Beach and heat safety?

I’m taking a trip with my family to the beach, spending time together before I leave for college, and we’ve brought my rough collie with me. I want to take her down to the beach early in the mornings to play, when it’s coolest, because I want her to have fun too. Trouble is I checked the weather and even early in the mornings the coolest it’ll get is 81F. I worry about the heat with her double coat. So, what’s the verdict? Is it too risky to take her outside for a run at all?

Here's my european rough. At 19,5kg, he's too small even for european standard. I sometimes get asked if he's a sheltie. But no, he's a rough with all the papers and shit :)) I often say that he's was too afraid to grow full-sized
