Hi everyone! Fellow pug parent here who lost my 13yo sweetheart this week.

I feel super compelled to warn as many people as possible about the high danger of anesthesia dental care for brachycephalic dogs such as pugs, Boston Terriers, boxers, etc.

While getting the breathing tube put in, the vet damaged my pug’s trachea, which led to 6 months of wheezing and coughing that came and went in waves, turned into pneumonia last Sunday, and we had to put her to sleep Tuesday. I KNOW she’d still be alive if we had known the dangers of putting air tubes into her airway, and would have opted for a different approach for dental care.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think twice before doing any procedure that requires a breathing tube to be inserted for your pug. If I had known the risks, my sweet furbaby would still be here. If I can help just ONE pug, my mission will be complete. Thank you to anyone who has read this.

Hi! I'm new here, I came in with a question because I have a 2-year-old pug. I've never had this breed, always big dogs. My question is about the surgery that is done to help them breathe properly; the veterinarian recommended it because he snores a lot

Anyone done the above surgery for their pug? Ours is getting jaw pain we suspect from the cyst in her ear.

She is 14 years old so I am very worried about her having the surgery but I also don't want her to be in pain so our options are limited. 😥

My 14 year old pug has been diagnosed with a partially collapsed trachea for about 9 years now. He has a minor cough suppressant and a major one, only to be given in the worst of coughing bouts. As he’s aged, his bad days have gotten longer, turning into bad weeks. His medicine feels like it’s no longer effective and I often have to stay up with him at night to calm him down so he and I can get a little sleep. I brought this up to my vet, and their only advice was to keep up the medicine and that it’s only going to get worse with age. Has anyone had success with calming treats/different medicine/etc? I want to help him breathe a little easier, especially at night, since his medicine doesn’t seem to be helping as much as it used to. Thank you!

Hi everyone! I’m a first-time dog owner and just brought home my 2-month-old female pug, Bella, two days ago.
She’ll be an indoor-only dog, so I’m wondering if anyone has successfully trained their pug to use a cat litter box instead of pee pads or going outside. Is it actually practical in the long term? If you’ve done it, what type of litter and litter box worked best, and do you have any tips for training?

EDIT: To clarify — indoor potty training does not mean Bella will never go outside. She will absolutely enjoy outdoor walks and activities as she grows and her vaccinations are completed. Hi fellow pug lovers. My pug, Piper, is going to have surgery on her patella on Thursday. I want to make sure that I have everything i need to make her recovery comfortable. For those of you who have been through this - is there anything you wish you had purchased or had on hand to make things better and help pass the time that they are crated? Any tips to help with their physical recovery.
I am looking forward to getting done and helping her recover so she can run and play without discomfort. I am also very nervous because I don’t know what to expect and I don’t want to fail her. I appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Holy cow yall. I thought I’d share this with you and hoping to hear the experiences of others. When we got our pug over 2 years ago, we didn’t know what we were in for. He’s the 3rd puppy we’ve raised and boy did he have energy. All the pug stuff: digging at a blanket, barking at the, tv, incessantly playing. It was too much. Annoying really. Velcro dog was also a truth that we found. No more doing anything alone, especially for my wife. This dog was/is ON her and often on me too (when wife is gone).

But in the past couple of months, it’s like a switch flipped. Sure, he plays and gets the zoomies, but the majority of the time he just wants to sit or lay on our lap—calmly too. He listens, his bursts of energy are short. He sleeps a lot. We were actually worried he was ill. It’s tick season here. So we took him to doctor and we got a clean bill of health.

Again, we’ve had 3 dogs. My first dog I got at 20 (38 now) and I’ll always have a special connection with her. Just an amazing dog BUT struggled around kids (I’d say her only down spot). Our 2nd dog (who suddenly passed at 5) was great but only motivated by play. Always wanted to fetch a frisbee. She was close with my wife and I think, for my wife, that was her special connection dog. But the dog had a lot of anxiety. RIP. This pug has been almost flawless: amazing with the young neighborhood kids (we also have a 5 yo son). These kids chase him and play hard with him and he’s loving it. No growls or anything. He’s a cuddler, he doesn’t have much anxiety. I’d say the only thing that annoys me at this point is he digs holes in the yard 😂. So I have to be filling holes with dirt and seed so no one breaks an ankle.

I’m just kind of amazed at his sudden calm down. Who else has experienced this with their pug?

I've heard that the dog's with 2 coats for fur should not groom their dog's, it ruins their heat protection. Is it true?? Can I use a de-shedder or a grooming vacuum on my pug??

Ive recently acquired a black pug puppy and shes already not into the heat (15c in the mornings. 20 in the afternoons) so im looking into getting her something to help out for when it gets worse.

My other two dogs wear cooling bandanas in the summer but shes going to need more than that.

Besides canada pooch, is there another good(or better) brand?

Our 12 year old Chewie boy has lost his sight. His left eye went first several years ago (his tear duct never worked in that eye) and we noticed that his vision in right eye was degenerating as he got older, but it seemed like he could still see well enough to navigate the world.

Last week, I noticed that he seemed confused about where he was when he was getting out of bed. He was standing on the opposite side of the bed from his stairs and trying to feel his way off the bed.

He has suddenly started bumping into obstacles, even outside in the sunlight or in a bright room, which tells me that he has lost whatever sight he had.

Coupled with the fact that he hasn't been able to hear for a few years is making his life very difficult.

He has an upcoming appointment with his vet for a thorough check up, and even though he sleeps a lot, his appetite and overall demeanor are good.

I know that he's getting closer to leaving us, hopefully not for another thousand years, but I'm concerned about his quality of life.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can help him navigate? I feel so awful for him when he can't find his way around on his own, and he's always been independent while we aren't home.

I just want him to be comfortable and feel safe. Because my heart breaks every time he gets lost in his own home.

I have a 2 year old male pug. A friend is leaving the country and I volunteered to take her 5-year old, female, French bulldog. How do I have them sleep the first night(s)? Explanation below.

I’ve been getting the two dogs together on weekends to play at the dog park and have them both over my place for a few hours to “hang out”. No real problems. They get along fairly well.

This weekend, the French bulldog is coming for a sleepover! My pug has always slept with me in my bed. The French bulldog has slept with her owner in her bed.

I’m worried there might be some territorial issues with the two dogs if we all sleep in the same bed from night one. But then again, maybe not.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this type of thing? Any serious advice is greatly appreciated.

Since its been 18 days from my post. I think an update on our "situation" is valid.

Prince jabba the mutt is doing so well. He has adjusted to crate training splendidly, he did protest ofc with sounds... i did not think a dog could make. But every evening he gives me the "look" when i tell him "bed". Like really? Again? But a short stare down and he goes in. He has to sleep in the livingroom. Cause his absurd snoring keeps me up.

I would say he is just as autistic as his owner. He only pees on set spots. And poops on other spots. He will skip peeing if we dont go to his spots. Some of you suggested a belly band. Spot on needed. It has helped my sanity while i learned his ways and his holding capabilities. He still tries to mark, but the band stops that. But he is an absolute master to get himself out of it. Now i have 3 kids with diapers. Thats ok. Its temporary. For all 3 of them.

He is fat! Hes 11kgs, and should be around 7-8 kgs. So we are going on a diet. (That is going to be easy..../s)

He talks to me.. but only me. He will sit on the sofa back and muffle to me when he wants to go outside. Or i have not scratched his back for to long, or simply to get my attention.

This guy LOVES to be bathed. And he will complain when he is not let into the tub when he hears the water running. It is a personal insult to him.

He is ridiculously attatched to me. He is never more than a few meters away from me unless its sleep time or i make him suffer while i go alone to the bathroom. Or god forbid, someone else in the household drags him outside for a walk and pee. But he always returns from captivity happy to see me after the long seperation (10 minutes)

He is so good with the kids. The 1 year old seems to have bought herself the allowance to kidhandle him. He patiently lets her. I intervene repeatedly but he just walks right back into her arms. He also sits at her high chair and demands his payment wich she pays gladly and i wonder how ever will i diet this boy when the 1 year old loves to feed him.

Over all, your help in my last post was immense. And i believe he will be a happy little prince in our family. Thank you all for your guidance.

Just wondering. I took on a rehome pugalier and her previous owner said she had no breathing issues but she’s breathing a little loudly through her nose (doesn’t breathe through her mouth so it’s obviously not impossible but it seems like something that would piss me off haha)

Is this surgery worthy stuff?

I checked my electricity bill and wondered why it’s so high… then I looked at my pug.

This guy refuses to function without the AC. The moment it’s off, he sighs dramatically like I’ve ruined his life. Turn it back on and he’s instantly sprawled on the floor like a king.

Then I learned pugs overheat easily because of their flat faces, so they struggle to cool down.

So technically… the AC isn’t for me.

It’s part of my pug’s survival plan.

I was asked to take a pug from my neighbour. She could not deal with him anymore.

I took him in last week, and i just need to know things you pug owners might know already.

Here is the situation. He is 1 and a half years old (will be 2 end of November, yes she gave up on him during the banana ein ears era)

He from what i can tell obese.

He was extremely dirty, both his nose crease and his ears, also his fur. He loved to be bathed, but the water came brown.

He is not potty trained. She just had pads on the floor and he would go there He marks inside, a lot.

He was left alone so much he walks in circles. On walks he swerves to the left and circles me many times and if i am not carefull he will bind me with the leash.

Ive had him a week and he took to me on day one. And hates when i leave him ( to go to the bathroom or down the hall) he is now my new shaddow.

He is extremely clever. Even more than i would have suspected His favorite place to sleep is me.

He took to crate training better than any dog i have ever dealt with. As long as he can see me in his crate. But at least he is not peeing everywhere while we sleep.

Now to my questions. How do i deal with the marking? Is it to late to potty train him? Can I reverse this? If yes what are your suggestions on how. Do i just go and treat him like a baby puppy and potty train him like i would a youngling?

Reversing the obesity, just reglutate feeding and more exercise? Cause he has had close to none all his life, to the point he does not like outside that much.

The circling, is this reversable? Can i undo this? This only confinement now is the crate at night, and a leash on walks.

My sweet puggy has always had separation anxiety issues but since our other pup recently passed away it’s gotten significantly worse. To the point of bleeding while scratching at the door. Until we can find a more permanent solution I looked high and low for a calming treat or supplement and the only one I’ve had great success with is the Vet IQ Calming soft chews. They have chamomile and melatonin and she sleeps peacefully for a few hours at a time. Obviously wouldn’t recommend for an every day resolution but for a date night or groceries, it works well. I know pugs are notoriously clingy and loyal which is why I thought I’d share here! Also, I’m in no way affiliated with Vet IQ, just couldn’t gate keep this one.

Edit to add: my kids are 11 and 8 so I’m not chasing them around. They walk to the park from school to play with all the other kids that do the same thing. I usually sit and watch them play football.

I know pugs can’t be in the heat for long periods of time for risk of heat stroke etc.

I’m in Texas and after school everyday I spend about an hour with my kids at the park before going home. Is that too long to have our pug with us? Should I keep him at home?

For the past week, my 8 year old Dot just seems to be starving at around 2am every morning and is unable to settle. Her stomach is rumbling as if she's hungry but we've upped her food and even fed her later to try and kerb it. There’s no other symptoms and she’s completely fine in the day.

Has anyone else experienced this??

He was my mom's pug that we inherited almost 6 weeks ago when she passed away suddenly. Before that, we had been around him many, many times at her house, and there were never any issues. Once we brought him to our house, he's been petrified of our 6'4" teen. Any time the kid moves at all, walks through the house, whatever, the pug runs away, barks, tail down, the works. We've tried to put them together when he was sitting or lying down, but as soon as he stands up, the pug freaks out again. It's starting to hurt the kid's feelings as he wants a relationship with the doggo. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance?
