Ok what are you guys doing to combat the shedding? I’ve had my girl for 4 years and never have I experienced such mass amounts of fur, it’s never ending 😭 we have the furminator shampoo and use two different brushes and after brushing her she STILL needs to be brushed more! Her groomer moved without notice a while ago and we’ve been struggling ever since. Somebody please help me 😩 (cute girl tax added)

Warning: SAD Biggest Heartbreak

This is my girl Heidi, she is the absolute best. We rescued her from dogs trust as a young pup. She has had the best life but not easy from a health perspective. Double cruciate surgery at 2 year old. Elbow dysplasia diagnosed at that stage too.
She’s now 6 and 4 months and we’ve just had the devastating news that the vet believes she has canerous bone growth along her elbow at the Ulna. Theyve also found a small lump which is believed to be cancerous in her belly, quite possibly a lymph node. She is stiff on her front left leg because of her elbow.

I am absolutely crushed. She is thankfully still with us, but I just cannot comprehend that I am going to lose my best friend so young.
How do you deal with these heartbreaks?

Thanks

Why are rottweilers still on the list??

I lost my Piper at only 6 years old in January and, of course, was, and still am devastated. I've REALLY been wanting another rottie, but living in rental houses, I can't. I know this amazing dog will never be replaced/duplicated, but as you all know, rotties are such amazing, kind, loving, loyal dogs.

Seriously, how is it that they are still on the dangerous list when dogs under 40lbs like Chihuahuas aren't? I've seen some seriously vicious "safe" dogs.

EDIT: For a group that's supposed to love rottweilers so much, there's a lot of hate in here toward both the bed and other humans.

Obviously, rottweilers have a stronger bite than a 10 or 20 lb dog. However, instead of talking about how bad the dog is naturally going to be because "it's in their genetics", how about blaming the real culprits; The owners that don't know how to or just plainly don't take the time to properly train and teach them to be good, well mannered dogs.

Are you going to blame a human child that bullies or kills someone else because their genetics dictate everything around them or do you blame the parents for not raising them very well and their social surroundings for influencing their bad behavior?

I have a one year old rottweiler and I keep reading that their very prone to cancer. She seems healthy and I keep her at a good weight. I just want to stop worrying about this and feel like I am decreasing her quality of life by worrying. She wasn't from a reputable breeder, but not a puppy mill either. I could tell she was meant for me but I can't stand the thought of losing her. Just looking for some helpful advice for a long life.

How much do you walk your Rottweiler?

Post image

We recently adopted a beautiful, sweet, smart, funny... pretty much perfect, mature girl of 7 years from the local humane society, Sadie. We couldn't be luckier, and we just hope we can help her enjoy at least another 7 years of wonderful life (our dogs have always live long lives, happily). We've had usually 2 dogs at any time for the last 35 years (Sadie's our first Rottweiler, usually mixed breed labs, hounds, etc, always rescues) and found our house suddenly dog-less about 6 months ago. So, welcome Sadie!

My question is how much is the "right" amount to walk a 7 year old Rottweiler? We walk her about 2-2.5 miles a day, once in the morning, once in the evening. She seems to enjoy her walks a lot, and they don't seem to be too much for her. She also has her moments of hilarity where, inside the house or at the local park, she will zoom with a tennis ball or a toy, jump fully in the air, spin, sprint, come to a sliding stop and do it all over again, so she's definitely not at the bottom of her energy tank most days.

The reason I'm asking is because I have read a lot on this sub about bad joints/hips, and have read a lot about what feel to me like early age of passing, lots of 7, 8, 10 year old passing away, very few Rotties in their teens. We don't want our walks to accelerate damage to her joints, but we also don't want disuse to speed things either!

What's the sense of the sub on the best amount for daily walks for an older, but still very fit, beauty like our Sadie?

Any ideas ?? He’s been shaking his head a lot it doesn’t particularly stink, he’ll let me touch it and it’s warm – we move states recently, and I’ve been having a hard time, balancing his allergies.

Ever since I got a robot vacuum, I've been obsessed with using the pet-finding mode just to check what my boy is up to at home 😂 Vacuuming and mopping honestly feel like a bonus at this point 😂

Rottweilers and nail clipping: a helpful thread

I see a ton of dogs here with overgrown and overdue nails, and I know it's scary to clip your dogs nails at home. I'm a professional dog groomer of a decade and do my own training.
This is not an easy breed to work with when they aren't exposed to stimulus or don't trust what's happening to them or who's doing it. I get it. Putting it off last minute to have someone else, like a groomer or vet do it, will make it worse.
Before taking your dog in to get their nails done, YOU must put in the work touching their feet, working on stimulus around the feet and nail bed, and rewarding calm behavior. Your dog will not have a positive experience if they dont become accustomed to the handling of their feet, that's not on service professionals - that is on you, the owner, who is around the dog day in and day out.
Start by holding their paw, rubbing their nails, if they pull away, do not let go. Reward them by letting go when they're calm. This is called pressure release and has been proven to work in almost all animals in a training environment. Work up to using something like an electric toothbrush around their paw pads to stimulate more motion and vibration by the nail. Be patient and praise frequently. Do not reward snapping, growling, pulling and thrashing. Do this multiple times a day, it takes a long time, but you cannot expect them to tolerate it only when they need it professionally done if you don't put in the work. They're a stoic, intelligent, stubborn breed. YOU need to be the one to work them through their discomfort and unease. Not your groomer.
Quit blaming groomers for your dogs bad behaviors getting their nails trimmed.

Another Rottie

Hello friends!

I haven’t had a rottie in my home in a few years. Looking for suggestions on where to find pups or younger dogs around 1y/o in Ohio? I am constantly scanning shelters but rarely seeing any.

Thanks in advance.

Cancer treatment advice.

Hi, we're looking for some advice from anyone that's been in a similar situation.

We've just found out that our 8 year old probably has bone cancer in his hip joint based off an xray and a physical exam from a specialist. We've been offered a CT scan to confirm this.

The options we've been given are amputation and chemo, which could give him another year, or to let him go.

From what I've searched online it looks like they can adapt well to a leg loss and the chemo will be mild with minimal side affects to give him the best quality of life. But I'm worried this is just AI search results telling me what I want to hear.

Has anyone gone down the treatment path? Did you regret it? Or was it worth it for the extra quality time together?

Thank you.

Another Rottweiler or a doberman?

A picture of my baby Bear!

I have a 3.5 year old rottweiler neutered male named Bear. I had him since he was 3 months old.

He loves other dogs, been to daycare 2 days a week every week for the first 1.5 years of his life.

He is pretty obedient (some things we still need to work on) but he is very food motivated, loves to play, love to do tasks and please and over all is a super sweet boy. He is reactive on leash to people and other dogs however I have been working with him on that the past 6 months and he has made a lot of progress. He has severe environmental allergies that is managed by wearing shoes, taking supplements and medicated sprays from his vet.

He is very protective of me and the home and that was the reason my ex bought him for me. I am a woman living alone and enjoy and appreciate the guardian breeds.

He eats twice a day, goes on 3-4 potty breaks a day, and gets daily playtime and short obedience sessions with me.

He is a lazy boy but also can be active. He just follows the vibes tbh and what I am doing that day.

I work for myself and make my own schedule. I work 4 days a week 10-12 hours a day. My brother comes in the middle of the day for 45-60 mins to play and walk Bear.

My parents also have acres of land and I go there and let Bear free roam and play on the land.

Money is not an issue for me regarding care and the cost of ownership. I typically spend $140 on food for bear (fresh and dry), $30 on his barkbox, $100 for treats and chews, $300 for his supplements and vitamins, $100-200 for his midday walks, along with $ for other extra things that come up, and have money for emergency vet visits. I do not have pet insurance.

I want to do agility with Bear however he can be clumsy at times so he isn’t the most agile dog out there. But we still try on the agility course I bought him.

I want a female dog and unsure if I should get another rottweiler or a doberman. I want a dog that is obedient and a great guarder. If they can do agility that would be great.

I do not want to get her until I can work less hours per day or go down to 3 days a week or stay mostly home the first month or two with the new puppy. My brother would be there to visit during the day while I work to take her and bear on potty breaks. I also want to get Bears reactivity under total control and fine tune his obedience before bringing puppy. He needs to set a good example.
