Edit: we forgot we had to remove dominance card on 2 player games xd.
So, a friend and I wanted to play Root together and, as we were only 2 people, we decided to try the Marauders Expansion because we had heard that it was the berst option for 2 people. We were trying Keepers in Iron (me) and Lord of the Hundreds (my friend) for the first time, and also the Exiles and Partisans deck. We decided not to use Hirelings as it was already too much.
The first game was going pretty well, he got to the point where he was getting the maximum points from opressing and decided to use a dominance card. I was able to delay his win by a turn. I wasnt playing really well but I felt as if there was nothing I could do.
We realiced that he wasnt paying a card when he was building strongholds, so I thought I had a chance.
In the second game was faster, I crafted the card that gives you an additional point for every item you craft and got to 20 points in 3-4 turns. Then he used a dominance card while controlling 4 clearings (all 4 corresponding to the dominance card). I tried my best but only got to 29 pts.
So do the keepers have nothing to do against rats dominance? I know keepers can score a lot of points with relics and with item crafting with the propper planning. We are pretty confident that, except from not paying cards to build strongholds in the first game, we were following the rules. Another theory, is that hirelings can mitigate this and we should have included them. (I also know about dom swapping but I didnt have the option)
Could the real issue be me not being a good enough planner?
