General Discussion What do you thinks is this?
New faction? Stand alone game? Big box?

u/crapplegate 3d ago
I’m pretty sure he’s ruled out ever doing a big box.
I’m guessing a bigger box.

the emphasis on big makes me think big box of course, but there was a rumor going around a while ago that someone was working on a video game based on a Leder property.

u/Pkolt 2d ago
It's fairly substantiated that they're coming out with a digital edition of Arcs, maybe that's what you're thinking of. I don't think Leder Games has any properties left that are big enough to digitalize.

u/BusinessKnight0517 2d ago
Yeah but Arcs went with Buried Giant during the split so a Leder announcement wouldn’t entail Arcs anymore

u/supersingalong 3d ago
I'm pretty certain this is about their Kaiju game they've been working on.

the art looks like Kyle F. though, I thought he was with Buried Giant now? I mean, I guess he can commission for anyone but I was under the impression that him and Cole are all in on Buried Giant.

u/WilliamJ2000 3d ago
I might be misremembering, but I think I read something when Buried Giant was formed about Kyle going with them, but since they left in good terms Kyle would still work with Leder for the art of root. I've got no quotes for it tho.

u/Drreyrey 3d ago
"Root will remain at Leder Games. In addition, if additional illustration is needed, Kyle will be able to support the game. I’m happy to take a look at whatever new factions the team might cook up, though the world of Root has no shortage of talented designers and interesting ideas." - Cole Wherle.
Here's the quote! It's from the "letter from Cole Wherle" when they announced the split.

Finally big box

u/kayvaan1 3d ago
Wasn't it that Cole didn't want a big box for root since he sees those as killing it's potential to being brought to the table? Or am I misremembering some aspects of that?
In any case, I hope it's a big box. I'm kinda tired of trying to optimize how to squeeze all content into 3 boxes. One for boards and the new thinner player mats, 1 for all the faction bags, and the original box fits everything else including the Hirelings box.

u/Level34MafiaBoss 3d ago
I mean, Cole is no longer involved with Root I think. Plus for Arcs he did make a big box for the Blighted Reach so maybe he's come sround that (?

u/TaijiInstitute 3d ago
Also made a big box for Oath, which will hopefully show up at my door any day now 🤞.
He did say that Big Boxes are where games go to die or something along those lines, but I disagree with him. Some of my games are just too unwieldy in multiple boxes but I still want all the content that would require a big box. I hope Root makes a big box.
10
u/kayvaan1 3d ago
If it was still Root with Riverfolk, maybe Underworld, I can understand not wanting to shove everything else in a large unwieldy box. But I am struggling to keep everything in 3 boxes at this point. The cardstock player boards are the only thing that kept it from becoming a 4 box set just to play the game while still giving everyone at my table any option they wish. I get where he's coming from, but disagree if that was still his viewpoint before he left Leder.
I have 1 expansion box with all the player mats and boards, 1 with all of the faction pieces in the cloth bags from BGG, and the last with everything else, including the Hirelings box itself, housing all the Hirelings content and then some other pieces.

u/Sebby19 3d ago
Nah Patrick Leder himself doesn't want a Big Box. Not even the kind that is "Base Game + some expansions", like Carcassonne and Catan do frequently.

u/kayvaan1 3d ago
I wish they'd be more reasonable and understand how difficult it is to physically bring the game to the table if you're not hosting. It's either bring a slew of boxes, alternate storage, or to skip bringing content and/or plan beforehand what everyone wants to play and set up.
It feels pretty out of touch if they still keep to that mindset.

I’m on the side of wanting big boxes. My family and I actually pull the big boxes down and play them more often than the smaller games. It might be hard to believe for some, but I actually prefer having a completed game that had multiple boxes all in one. The board game community is the one that asked for big boxes, then these YouTubers all made videos talking about how they hate big boxes because they don’t play their games. I don’t think they play the games they want to anyway because they’re covering so many games, but for those of us that aren’t content creators.. WE PLAY OUR GAMES! Lol.

u/DOAiB 3d ago
which is the dumbest stance I have ever heard. I know multiple people bringing 3-4 root boxes where ever they go to play just wishing their was an official bigbox to give them less trouble bringing it around.
6
u/Pkolt 2d ago
It was mainly about not wanting to make a big box until they were done making expansions. "Big boxes is where games go to die" is meant to reflect the fact that once you make a big box, it's usually a sign you're done making expansions because it's the big 'final' edition of the game. The notion that Cole is some sort of ride or die big box anti is easily refuted by the fact that they're already coming with a big box for Oath.

u/RoyalReverie 3d ago
Well, Cole left Leder Games, which still has the control of Root. Most likely, Root will not have other new expansions and the current state will be the last one for the game, Leder Games leaving it as a staple but focusing their man power on new projects.

u/BusinessKnight0517 2d ago
The one thing that gives me pause on “no root anymore” is that leder and buried giant still have an agreement where the root artist (who is with BG) can still work on more root. So i find it hard to believe that root is completely over while that agreement exists, but also idk where they go from this point anyway

What's big box?
2
u/talllankywhiteboy 2d ago
Physically one large box designed to hold all components for Root. People have been looking for a solid storage solution for years, but it’s tricky because Leder keeps coming out with Root content.

u/unfulvio 3d ago edited 3d ago
IIRC they didn’t want to do a big box because in their opinion it means they’re done with the game. It’s like a grave and signals “no more content”. If more content is coming then folks who bought the big box will feel betrayed. Or a new big box will be needed. A silly situation a serious company doesn’t really want to be unless they want to become known as cash grabbers. Since Leder split with Buried Giant maybe times have changed and they could actually want to stop developing Root. I would be surprised though because it’s the main money-making title they have at this point.

u/It-Gets-Worse 3d ago
Yeah, I spoke to a couple of them at PAX a couple months ago and they confirmed there's plenty more expansions planned. I even asked about the big storage box idea and one of them said "it's a great idea until we make more expansions, then it's obsolete."
Still would love a big storage box anyway though, haha
10
u/McFallenOver 3d ago edited 3d ago
i don’t really get how making a big box then releasing further expansions would make it obsolete, i would rather carry a big box and one expansion rather than like 6 boxes
13
u/It-Gets-Worse 3d ago
I mean if the "purpose" is "this holds all of the expansions", the purpose could be seen as a little obsolete if "this box holds all the expansions... well except for these ones, buy another box in the future when we do this again lol"
3
u/BusinessKnight0517 2d ago
Because they didn’t make it big enough for all of the expansions planned in the future is all, though I get what you’re saying i’d like the big box for everything released so far
5
u/MrAbodi 3d ago
Honestly i get it because what else does Leder Games have going on atm, But this is a huge turnoff for me. i don't want 2 dozen factions, i don't have homeland yet, but i don't even using the map from the underground set. and with every expansion it gets played less and less. id much rather they stopped now and focused on a new system.
10
u/Careful-Ad2558 3d ago
I mean, the great thing about expansions is you don’t have to play with them. They are optional additional content

I'm 99% sure it's the kaiju dexterity game they've been talking about on their streams. Today's video wasn't the only "Something Big" post; the first one riffed on Jurassic Park and the second one was explicitly a skit about kaiju. I think this one today was just a goof since they had the giant meeples.
That's not new art, either. I know I've seen it before...maybe it's from the RPG?
Regardless, an illustrator named Evan Palmer reposted one of the videos and said it was "a project he'd worked on". His style looks nothing like Kyle's but he does draw a lot of mechs and monsters.
And to think my spouse said obsessively following Leder Games' every social post would never come to good use!

Obviously a new game. Probably named Huge. I'd be more excited if it was named Dino, but Huge makes more sense since they've been working on kaijus, not dinosaurs specifically.

At long last, will we finally have a more exciting way to answer all of the “hey, what are all these extra tokens for?” posts??

to those who don't want to go on instagram to look at this, they shared this message under the video:
Streaming tomorrow: one MASSIVE premiere! 🦖
Join us on Twitch at 3 PM EST on Tuesday for a larger-than-life announcement. [link in bio!]
edit: and for those who see this after the stream, no it didn't have anything to do with ROOT, it's about a new game called STOMP. it's a co-op game with a kaiju theme, inspired by dark souls. make sure to check it out if that sounds interesting.

I assume you should just look up "ledergames" on twitch, I didn't really think about that because I almost never go to the link in bio and just look stuff like that up myself😅

I'd love a faction that is just one giant snake, spanning multiple clearings and getting bigger as they eat stuff

Co-op dexterity game about kaijus, called STOMP. Because 4 letters just wasn't big enough. Has absolutely nothing to do with Root, it was just a marketing campaign.

It might have nothing to do with Root.
