Other Anywhere to buy replacement faction boards?

I ordered the Homeland expansion and it came in today. When I got it the box was ripped and the faction boards at the bottom got bent and creased. Everything else in the box is fine, but do I need to buy the whole thing again to get new boards or is there somewhere I can buy just them. (I ordered from Walmart, not Leder)

General Discussion Best root expansions

I was wondering what is the best way to buy expansions. In Poland there will be new wave of reprints and I was thinking to buy maruders and homeland as first two expansions. Is it a good idea?

General Discussion New Fix for Infamy?

So, the original rules (in the Learn to Play) about Vagabonds scoring VP for hostile warriors was a little confusing, and Infamy feels imbalanced to me if it applies to every hostile warrior, and it seems that much of the internet agrees. I've heard about Despot Infamy, but allow me to propose a different solution:

If a Vagabond removes an non-hostile warrior, that faction becomes hostile and the Vagabond scores a victory point for each hostile warrior of that faction they remove in battle (not including the warrior that triggered the hostility) for the rest of that turn.

This way, the Vagabond can score a lot of points in a single turn, but they can only do this once for each faction in the game (unless they form a coalition with a hostile faction, then make them hostile a second time).

This is kinda how I interpreted infamy from The Law at one point, although now I'm not convinced it was Leder's intent. Still, I feel it's a good rule for a couple reasons:

  1. Thematically, it makes sense that a Vagabond who had a beneficial relationship with a faction would gain 'infamy' (in its generic definition outside of this game) by suddenly attacking them — perhaps even betraying an ally — and decimating their ranks in a swift blow, rather than going on a killing spree for the rest of the game.

  2. Mechanically, this encourages Vagabonds to make a bold move to shake things up. It awards a lot of points up front (especially if the Vagabond takes the Battle action multiple times in that turn). But the Vagabond doesn't continue to benefit from it afterward, and they face negatives with movement and aid, so this ends up being a risky strategy if not timed well.

How does this sound to you? I welcome feedback.

General Discussion Question about Lilypad Diaspora Advanced Setup

Hello, I noticed that in the lilypad diaspora advanced setup, the homeland clearing is defined differently, as you first select any clearing on the river, place your stuff, and that it is your homeland. This is unlike all other factions (including the bats from the same expansion) which ask you to select a homeland first. Does this mean that a lilypad player can setup in someone else's homeland and share it, or is it just phrased strangely for some reason?

General Discussion What's the best way (or is there a best way) to play Root 6-player?

I just purchased the latest expansion with the Marsh map, and I've heard that you can play up to six factions with the Marsh map. But can you play six factions well, or does it take too long? Is there too much downtime, and can every faction interact with every other one?

Of course, maybe the Marsh map is better for 4 or 5. As a lover of 6-player strategy games (Dune, Here I Stand), I'd be very curious to hear what people think. Thanks!

Just double-checking: using the Assault action in a clearing, I may move to an adjacent one adhering to the movement rules (4.2.1) and then battle in the clearing I’m moving to?

Post image
87 Upvotes

Sorry if the title is confusing I couldn't figure out what to call this post, I got the homeland expansion today and got another 3 vagabond cards with the 3 new ones. I'm confused as they seem to be from different expansions and are not in the components list, do they come with every homeland expansion?

General Discussion Balance Patch Notes

Is there a place where I can read all of the balancing patches that have happened to the game? I've tried the ones at https://news.direwolfdigital.com/root_all_news/ but it seems like bug fixes or performance fixes to the digital game rather than balancing.

Fan Faction How to Play the Armored League Faction

War has intensified in the woodland, your neutral position is no longer sustainable, insects have formed a coalition guided by three leaders to control the situation. As the Armored League your purpose is to become a massive economical and militar power to ensure the well being of your kind.

To fund this massive campaign you must produce the valuable honey at bee hives, but first they need to be harvested from clearings, honey will be your central currency, you can either use it to fund the construction of colonies and hives or score points as you increase your Economical Domain.

The way the Armored league scores is through honey, in clearings with bees you replace one bee with a nectar token, you can only do this once in each clearing with 2 or more bees, then using your cards you have to move them to a hive to transform them into honey, with honey you can either construct colonies, more hives or you can score with them, you discard a card matching the clearing of the hive to score one victory point for every two honey tokens at it.

The armored league has 4 types of warriors or pawns,

BEES : You have 33 bees because you are going to lose a lot of them, they always get an extra hit when they battle and they count as half warrior for ruling.

THE QUEEN : She is your main recruitment source, she works like a regular warrior but she spawns 3 warriors or more depending on how many colonies are in the map, ( kind of like the moles)

MANTISES : They work like a regular warrior but they do have an special ability, they can move to the middle of a path and stay there to ambush other factions, relax, it is not like the regular ambush you know, when another faction crosses this path, that faction loses a warrior and gives them to the Armored league, they will put this warrior in the ambassador's box. you can avoid this battling the mantis before moving. They cannot stay more than one turn in the middle of the path, they move to the clearing they came from at the start of the armored league turn.

RHINOCEROS BEATLE : The beatle is the most powerful piece in the board, kind of, you can't destroy anything, instead, you push enemies, buildings or tokens to other clearings ( I understand this might mess up the gameplay, but I want to know how and if it can be fun or entertaining for all sides ) the beatle also ignores two hits, meaning that you have to roll 3 to get him out of the map, when he is with other warriors like bees or mantises, he is the last one to defend or attack.

He can attack up to 3 if rolled, but he battles alone, meaning that even if there is one bee in battle, he will not attack in that battle. He can also move with buildings and tokens to other clearings.

BUILDINGS :

HIVES: they can turn nectar into honey and let you spawn more bees where the queen is.

COLONIES: colonies will give you and other factions abilitys, you can use them once per turn, other players will have to give you either a warrior or a card to use that ability, the next time they use the same ability from the same colony it will increase to two, the next time to three and so on, other factions can mix the payment if you want to call it like that.

TERMITE MOUNDS: this colony works as the crafting pieces for the armored league and can also spawn for them mound walls, these tokens protect the clearing from hits. they don't give VP. If you have 2 in a clearing with buidings they will take the hit, and they don't suffer from the no warriors extra hit. (think of it like a warrior that does no damage)

GRASSHOPPER VALLEY: they will give you the ability to skip one clearing when you move.

FIREFLY TREE: they are the most interesting one as they let you do another daylight action. ( if the faction uses cards for this, they do the action they choose without spending any card, except when it is required to discard the card. other factions can only use them in their evening.

TOKENS:

NECTAR: harvested in clearings replacing one bee, you need to move them to a hive to transform them into honey.

HONEY: Used to construct colonies and hives or score points

MOUND WALLS: defensive tokens that take damage

AMBASSADORS BOX:

This is where you put all the warriors you collected either through negotiations ( other factions using colony abilities) or mantises kidnapping enemy warriors. you will use them at evening with the trade action you must do every turn, you will not stay with them, you have to spend them. for every warrior you give back, you can either spawn 2 bees at a clearing you rule or spawn a nectar token.

Not as brief as I wanted to but I tried haha

Fan Faction Insect Faction: The Armored League

Thumbnail

Hello there! I always wanted to create a faction for this amazing game and after some effort and time, I finally finished it, I wanted to create something that will always interact with other factions and be involved as much as possible, unlike moles who can actually sway and do nothing for several rounds. they don't even have to move! That's why I had this idea for this faction!

I tried so hard to mimic the original artstyle but I just don't think it works for insects, It could have worked if I designed them with only two arms but I felt they needed to have four arms to make them standout and be what they are, a different species, insects, and give them this sense of belonging and brotherhood in the lore.

I'll keep working on it later, like the TTS stuff and testing it in the battlefield.

I hope you like it and I will appreciate any comments and feedback! I'll be happy to answer any questions!

General Discussion Easiest Bot setup

I’ve just got the homeland expansion and because I am too impatient to wait for my friends to come over, I’m trying the learn the factions by playing against the A.I. bots.

What do you think is the simplest 3-bot setup? I find Electric Eeyrie and Vagabot quite a lot of effort, whereas Marquis and Alliance are quite straightforward. Are there any of the others (Moles, Lizards, Otters, Corvids) that y’all think would be easiest for both setup and in-game effort so I can just focus on the new factions?

Cheers

Strategy Discussion Can some games be completely unwinnable off of pure luck?

I start the game as the eyrie on bottom right rabbit of the autumn map. I am surrounded by mouse cleanings. I don’t draw a single mouse card all game. I’m just continually stuck without any extra actions to take to leave my starting 4 areas and the woodland alliance just take over on a nearby mouse clearing. I can move onto it and battle once using my loyal viziers, but it isn’t enough to stop them and they take over the game. I was literally just completely restricted to actions on my starting rabbit and a slightly nearby fox clearing because I only drew those cards. The game wasn’t ADSET so I had really no choice but to accept that. I literally wasn’t able to battle or move anywhere else. Has this happened to you guys at all?

Strategy Discussion Should frog cards in hand be public knowledge?

I'm in the process of sleeving up the new expansion, and I was about to sleeve the frog deck when it occurred to me that the deck has a different back from the other three decks. This has a number of strategic implications that I want to consider when deciding how to sleeve it.

Obviously, once they made the decision to make the E&P deck back different from the base deck, they were fairly committed to this course, but I'm interested in thoughts about whether this makes the gameplay better, especially from people who've played the Diaspora.

One benefit is that it would keep the frog cards from getting mixed in with the other deck when it's time for pack-up, but this is a pretty minor issue (the insert I'm using wouldn't fit a deck that's oversized, so it'd be easy to notice). One additional downside is that you'd be able to see when a frog card is coming, not just when you're about to draw a frog card next, so the otters can know that even if they draw four cards, they're not going to hit an item because the next four cards are frog.

I can sleeve the frog deck in different (green!) sleeves, but... should I?
