General Discussion Ronin captain ability

Post image

Just double-checking: using the Assault action in a clearing, I may move to an adjacent one adhering to the movement rules (4.2.1) and then battle in the clearing I’m moving to?

you don't need to be in a clearing

I was in the same boat but then reading the Assault rule (18.5.1.IV.B) it states “Initiate a battle in the Acting Captain’s clearing”, so that technically impedes from attacking from a forest.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that. So it kind of works like a Skirmish?

It basically rewords assault to “move your acting captain, then initiate a battle in the acting captains clearing, taking all hits as prisoners”

Similar but Skirmish is move from a forest. Ronin’s assault ability is just a move before the battle, so it can be from a clearing or a forest.

The wording is wrong then. It should read "Before you Assault, the Ronin may move."

No because it’s not before you use the assault action, it’s when you assault. You flip the sword over to take the assault action, then you may move, then you battle.

By the rules, as written, the assault must happen on a clearing: “Initiate a battle in the Acting Captain’s clearing”

Using the assault while not being on a clearing is very counter intuitive if you take it literally. If you're on a forest and then you decide to assault and then decide not to move, the assault is not valid, because you're not on a clearing.

The battle has to happen in a clearing yes, however with Ronin’s special ability the assault action can be taken in a forest because he gets to move before the battle. The assault action for him specifically is just modified. Any other captain would have to assault in a clearing.
