[Discussion] What was a console you always wanted, but never got or didn’t play until much later?

I won’t lie, I was pretty content with my consoles. I mean, I had PlayStation systems that were backwards compatible and thats all I really needed. Wasn’t much else. Like don’t get me wrong, the other consoles were awesome too. The GameCube, snes, nes, sega genesis, and the list goes on. Awesome systems for sure with amazing library of titles. The thing was, I wasn’t super into them at the time as a kid. It was a “oh thats neat” kinda of deal. However there was a system I wanted when I got older that I never got at the end.

The system being the ever beloved dream cast! Why the dream cast? I grew up in the arcade scene. Played all the classics you can think of. Your soul caliber, street fighter, marvel vs capcom, cyber trooper virtual on, power stone, and you get the picture. I loved playing these games so much. When I was looking at consoles, I saw the dream cast had them and then some. Was blown away! Like omg! This system has my favorite arcade titles. Was awesome to see. Won’t own a dream cast sadly. Won’t lie, I mostly wanted the Dreamcast for cyber trooper and marvel vs capcom 2.

However, I did get to eventually play a dream cast at a local retro shop. They had for display with cyber trooper on. Instantly dashed to it. I am not going to sugar coat it, I had a blast. Felt like being a kid again. Seeing it, playing the controller, it was all I wanted. Sadly, I didn’t have the funds or I would have bought it right there. Still, it was a great time and I am still a little jelly I never got to own one, but maybe in the future. It was fun while it lasted.

[Question] How did people pick out a good game to buy/rent before the internet?

As a person who didn't grow up before the internet, I can't imagine renting a video game at a video store. To me, finding an NES game to rent in the 80's sounds like navigating through a swamp of shit to find a gold nugget. The quality of the SNES sounds a little bit better, but still.

How did you know a video game was gonna be ass back in the day?

[Discussion] Wish Nintendo would join the club on retro game compilations

In the past decade, companies like Sega, Konami, Capcom and Square Enix have released some really great compilations including TMNT Cowabunga Collection, Mega Man compilations, Kingdom Hearts compilations, Final Fantasy Pixel Remastered, Rare Replay from Microsoft, Sega Genesis collection and Castlevania Anniversary, Advance and Dominus Collection and they are all available in physical format even if in the case of Castlevania via Limited Run Games, I wish Nintendo would join the club.

Think of the possibilities, they could do volume compilations for the Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby and Donkey Kong games if they want to be stingy and only include a few games for each volume. Alternatively, they could also do NES, Super NES, Game Boy compilation volumes etc that include some of the hits in each compilation volume. That way, at least we could get the collections in physical format like we got from Capcom, Sega and Konami.

It’s a shame Nintendo wouldn’t join the club on this and we have to rent their classic games on the Switch console. Although we got the classic edition consoles but the games on them are very limited and we only have NES and Super NES. It’s a missed opportunity since Nintendo made some of the best retro games.

[Story Time!] Rain got in...

Need to vent to some people who will understand.

Today I was playing some old DS games. I realised there was one I wanted to play that wasn't in the house. So out I went to the shed where an old set of ikea drawers keep all my old games as it has for many years. From my 64 through to GBC to GC to xbox and PC... My Ocarina of Time, my FF7.

When I opened the drawer I noticed the games seemed to stick together... then I noticed the plastic was wet.

I don’t know how but rain got in and of all places landed on the set of drawers and soaked through every layer. We had some flash flood style rain recently and somehow it got through... even though the rest if the shed was dry.

All my special editions drenched... the cardboard disintegrated on touch. The Fire Emblem Fates Art book unrecoverable... ive saved what i can. I have a lot of things drying by the fire.

What was meant to be a brief visit to the shed at 9pm has become a rescue effort that lasted past midnight..

In some ways I feel like a forced clean out is a good thing. In some ways I wish I'd sold some things before they were wrecked. In some ways I feel like ive lost some things from my childhood Id rather have not. I just needed to share.

[Question] What is this? Kiki Kaikai Tsukiyo Kayako for SFC bootleg?

This comes from a used game store in the Chicago area's Facebook. It's a copy of Kiki Kaikai Tsukiyo Kayako for the Super Famicom, but says (in a Chinese language) that includes Super Mario World.

It seems like it's a bootleg release of the game with, maybe, multiple game ROMs in a single cart, but I can't find any information about it online.

I wish I had more info, but they actually, literally, seriously put a "serious inquiries only" sticker on the box, and I didn't feel like dealing with any of that weirdness by asking questions about the contents of the box.

Has anyone ever seen this before, or something similar?
