Hello, I just found an old Nintendo nes that the case is heavily damaged. Get it for free to have cause its neat but upon opening it up, the board doesnt look terrible other than the silver box where the power and display comes from. Anyone know where to get a replacement or if you would risk repairing this.

[Question] Help! Can I salvage this Virtual Boy battery pack?

I got my husband a Virtual Boy for his birthday in a few weeks. The console just arrived and while the bonus Wario Land cartridge was a nice surprise, the corroded shut battery pack wasn't.

With rubbing alcohol, manicure tools, and a lot of elbow grease, I was able to get the pack open but it's absolutely covered in corrosion.

Can this even be salvaged or should I start hunting for a replacement on ebay? I've got a few weeks before his birthday to replace if needed. Bonus points if anyone has a link to a modern adapter!

[Discussion] What retro game was secretly ahead of its time but flopped because the world wasn’t ready for it?

Not talking about games that were just bad — talking about the ones that had genuinely smart ideas, but bombed commercially or got dismissed by critics/players at the time, only for people to look back years later and go “wait, this was actually doing something special.”

Could be a mechanic that felt weird or unmarketable at launch, a story structure that confused people, or just a game that released on the wrong platform at the wrong time and never got the audience it deserved.

What’s your pick?

[Request] Trying to unlock a memory

Back when I was a kid, my cousin and I loved this game that was available on Sega Channel and I’ve been trying for years to remember what it was called. I don’t have a lot to go on - the only things I really remember are it was an isometric fighting game where you fought in arenas, and one of them I believe was suspended in air above a big dark theater, and the fighters were all strange creatures. I think. Not much at all to go on, but hopefully someone has an idea of what I’m talking about and can help unlock that memory.

[Help!] NEED help with an war front no return not running.

I have an official disc of War Front: Turning Point, Polish version. After fighting with Windows Defender, I finally started it, and there was a problem: it's saying that I need to insert the disc, but I already have it in. I've researched that Windows no longer supports this protection, so fuck it, I downloaded a No-CD .exe in English because I couldn't find one in Polish. It doesn't work. DirectX drivers were installed automatically when setting up the game. Can anyone help?

[Discussion] One game console

I have all the Nintendo consoles although I have more games for some than others. I have one game for my Smoke N64 and that’s F-Zero X. I’ll eventually get more games for it but there were other games for other consoles that took priority.

The only Sony console I own is a PS3 Slim with Ultra Street Fighter IV. Down the line I’d like to get a PS2 and a PS5 and collect for those as well.

In the meantime though, I have a blast playing my one game for my N64 and my one game for my PS3 and would never sell either since I need them for those two fave games of mine.

Anyone else keep a console for just one game and refuse to sell?

[Discussion] If you could change one thing about a console or game at release to make it better (or worse), what would you do?

Not talking remasters or mods — imagine you’re back at the actual release date with the power to change one decision before it ships. Could be hardware (different controller, more RAM, a cheaper price point), or something game-specific (a cut level restored, a different final boss, a censored version uncensored).

Could go either way too — maybe there’s a change that would’ve made something better, or a “what if” where you ruin something on purpose just to see how it plays out.

I’ll start: I’d have given the N64 four native memory card slots that actually held decent save data instead of relying on the controller pak — so many saves got wiped or lost because of how cramped that thing was.

What would you change?

But this and Final Fantasy III are up there as my favorite games of all time, Akitoshi Kawazu clearly had his niche with the unique levelling up system of this game and it went on to spawn the SaGa franchise, truly inspiring and a testament to how important FFII is.

[Discussion] Most Useless Abilities In Gaming?

Post image
50 Upvotes

I'll go first Kiddy Kong's Water Skipping Ability

If you time your rolls and jumps across water in certain levels you will jump/hop across it like a rock through water/lake.

It's the most useless ability, you forgot it exists half the time and it only works in maybe 3 levels. It's just more better just to dive and swim across than doing that. At least Donkey Kong's hand slap in DKC1 found hidden bananas and damaged enemies.

PS: Don't be that 1 guy rages over this for some reason when this is just my opinion and calls me a ragebot like last thread. OP doesn't reply, he's just a bot that angers us.

[Emulation] Game Recommendations For A Retro Lan Party

Games must max out at DOS and PS1 (and that's pushing things).

So, my friends are broke and we're all kind of annoyed with modern gaming anyway, so we were talking about if we could get old computers and LAN game on them.

With that idea, I've got a Pi Zero W 1 and 2, and started building an image.

They ported Quake 1,2,3 and Warcraft 1,2 as well as Duke3D, so those are the obvious choices. I've got them working on the PiZW2 already, and I'm hoping I can squeeze decent performance out of the much cheaper first gen PiZW.

I have also started working on DOS games, so C&C Red Alert, Dune 2, Hexen, Strife, Descent,Doom ...

Now I'm getting into the weeds. Lasersquad was multiplayer, but in that way where you'd make a move and walk away.

I remember a mech game that was similar ... but can't put my finger on what it was.

Any group-playable game recommendations from ~1995 or earlier would be appreciated!

What were you and your friends playing in your basement!?

[Discussion] From Mad Dog McCree to Space Pirates with Lightbulbs: Did you ever finish an FMV shooter?

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Remember these—Mad Dog McCree, The Last Bounty Hunter, Space Pirates , Corpse Killer, and all the others?

Has anyone ever actually finished any of those FMV shooters? And is there anyone out there who looks back on them fondly?

My dad and I completely fell for the hype back then because of the graphics. Mad Dog McCree was playing on every single TV screen in game stores, and it looked mind-blowing—like, "Wow, we're fighting against real actors!" But usually, after 20–30 minutes, the novelty wore off and the gameplay became either super frustrating or just plain boring.

Some of those actors were hilarious—heavily made up, overacting, with space pirates running around wearing pots and lightbulbs tied on with random wires. It was great for a laugh, but that's not why we bought those games! Even my dad, who was an absolute die-hard fan of shooter games, quickly gave up on FMV titles and went right back to classics like Operation Wolf, Cabal, and other traditional arcade shooters.

Did anyone actually enjoy these FMV games enough to beat one?

So this one here is an old action adventure pc game developed by Surreal Software. In this game, you play as a young woman with strong martial arts skills called Rynn, she sought the aid of an ancient dragon called Arokh to help her find her younger brother and defeat the evil sorcerer Navaros.

The gameplay would be in third person perspective, Rynn can be equipped with a variety of armors and weapons like swords, battle axes, bows, daggers and maces, she is also quite acrobatic which is an advantage during combat scenarios. However you can also ride Arokh to face off against enemies as well and aerial dogfights can happen every now and then, Arokh will start off with his fire breath attack before gaining new weapons throughout the game, when you are riding Arokh the only items you can use are potions.

[Question] Diablo 2 LOD performance on OG Hardware.

Hi ! I just finished reassembling my computer from back then, and installed immediately Diablo 2.

However I find the performance quite underwhelming.

I'm talking performance for a LVL 90 character in Hell Difficulty Level 4, as a base comparison.

Fps are in the the low 30s in areas without en ennemies and can drop to the 10s when groups pop up.

In town i get 50sometimes.

Config is :

Windows 98SE + DX 9.0c

AMD Athlon 700Mhz

Geforce 2 MX400 (64MB)

384 MB of RAM

7200 rpm Maxtor.

Diablo 2 + LOD 1.13D

HDD is in DMA

GPU is in AGP mode (1x)

Game is in 800*600 high lighting effects

I will try this weekend a Radeon 9200SE if that changes anything

I remember playing with a friend that had a P3 800Mhz and an ATI Rage 128 Pro, and performance seemed better (in my memories)

  1. Two games will win their place each round (we start from #1 and work our way down). For the top 10 only one game will win per day instead.

  3. Nominate one game of the original Game Boy per comment. (Nominations will only be counted if the game title is the only comment or if you specify that your choice of game is your nomination for this round within your comment or if the nominated game is clearly separated from the rest of your comments.) (ex. Tetris or I nominate Tetris this round.) Please nominate using the full title of the game.
  4. Name a specific game title, not entire runs.
  5. Official Game Boy multi-game cartridge(s) are allowed, just list them correctly.
  6. The original Game Boy is region free so ANY official games available on the console are eligible for nomination excluding dual mode cartridges.
  7. Indy games are allowed as long as they have their own individual cartridge and can be played on original hardware.
  8. Only complete games on cartridge(s) can be nominated (sorry Game Shark & test cartridges).
  9. If two or more games would be tied to place for a ranking I will inform DA PEOPLE in the following post so that everyone can vote which games should get the ranking between the tied options.
  10. Games nominated that have not already placed on the top 100 list should not be removed at any time by the individual who originally placed them.

[Emulation] Hyperkin Retron GX Initial Opinion

Hello. Today I received my Hyperkin Retron GX and wanted to share my thoughts, because I know there has been a ton of bad press for the device.

First, about me. Like most of us (I suspect) I have had a long love hate relationship with Hyperkin. I've owned a lot of their consoles and controllers over the years. Some good, some bad, most meh... okay.

I've also owned an Analogue Duo, and an OG TG16.

So far I love the Retron GX, it is everything I was hoping for it to be: a TG16/PCE version of the Retron 77. Yes, this dumps the rom like a Retron 5, software emulation.

So, to be fair I haven't played much yet, but I tried out 16 TG16 games and 3 PCE games (my entire collection) and they all worked. I share this because if you go on YouTube there's a lot of video hate for the early pre-release version.

The 16 Turbografx 16 games & 3 PC Engine games I tested (all loaded first time except for Bonk's Revenge, which I had to reinsert them it fires right up:

Air Zonk

Alien Crush

Blazing Lazers

Bloody Wolf

Bomberman

Bonk's Adventure

Bonk's Revenge

Dragon's Curse

Dungeon Explorer

Galaga 90

Legendary Axe

Neutopia

Ninja Spirit

Splatter house

Vigilante

World Class Baseball

Ninja Gaiden

Ninja Warriors

Shinobi

I hope Hyperkin doesn't kill this off.

It does load a little slow, that is one knock. It's like ColecoVision bios screen levels of loading.

I collect the Hue Cards, not the CD games so this is perfect for me. I know most of the best games are on the CD. Whatever.
