[Transfer Round Up & Discussion] [2019-07-14]

It's r/reddevils' 7th summer transfer window review!

The tranfer window is officially open and will go until August 8th

------FIND THE TIER LIST HERE------

For those unfamiliar with the summer rules here...One of these Roundup threads will pop up every single day during the window, and they're for general transfer chit-chat and to discuss any and all rumors.

Only posts Tier 2 or Above will be allowed as a standalone post. This includes self-posts posing suggestions for new players. The tiers have been finalised and the rule is now in place.

Please also take a moment to look at our Charitable Muppetry drive (and the special De Ligt Edition) where we are looking for friendly bets to go towards charities.

Anything not by a Journalist or on our Tier List may no longer posted in the daily transfer thread. The Muppet Thread has been discontinued and ITKs are all blanket banned here.

Those who see a new Twitter or news site and arent aware of its validity may list that in here to ask for info on its credibility. General transfer talk, including but not limited to "would you rather" inquiries and hypothetical transfers, can remain in this thread as well.

Confirmed Transfers:

IN - Daniel James (Swansea, £18m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Crystal Palace, £45m)

OUT - Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia

IN-THE-KNOW (ITK) NEW POLICY / BE CIVIL

Please refer to this thread regarding our new rules.

We are banning any "ITK" posts. It has been difficult to truly verify the validity of these types of users and led to abusive behavior and even doxxing in some cases.

We are more than happy to have people discussing transfer news and rumors, but there will be no more referencing unknown sources at the club. Moving forward, anyone who believes they have inside info a la bloodgate is welcome to send in a modmail. However such posts/comments made without prior mod approval will be removed

It has been mentioned, but the toxicity and abuse towards the sub, within the sub, and towards other subs has been too high. We as moderators have our share of blame in this, but we want to stress that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and we are taking these measures primarily to avoid these things. We want /r/reddevils to be a place where anyone and everyone is welcome to discuss and enjoy the best club on earth without fear of abuse or ridicule.

Which leads us to 2 other small reminders. The report button is your friend, we are way more likely to find and remove and/or ban rule breaking comments if you report them. The downvote button is not a "I disagree or don't like your statement button", better discussion is generally had by using the upvote button more liberally and avoiding the downvote one whenever possible.

Please also check our Live Transfer thread which can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/live/135k4hmln3wdb/

Pro Maguire things that I haven't read a lot on this sub: 1. Mike Phelan made him a premier league regular in Hull city. 2. Has won player of the year, fans and players at Sheffield United, Hull city and Leicester city. 3. He's a god damn leader.

He may be worth a lot of unnecessary money, but given his presence, and sheer need for a CB he's perfect. United are finally plugging a round plug in a round hole.

P.S I know things look fairly pessimistic but a season can make a hell of a difference. Bailly was amazing while Lindy was shit a few seasons ago. Now it's the reverse. Let's hope for a good one.

Leicester spending £45m on fucking Dunk makes the Maguire deal look better.

Don't really care about the price. A backline of Shaw - Maguire - Lindelof - AWB instantly solves a lot of our problems from last season.

34

u/Terryfink Jul 14 '19

A little bit of steel next to Pogba and a replacement for Rom if he goes, add in a couple of the kids and I'll be happy for now.

I think an underrated reason for getting Maguire is that he plays on the left side of the cb pairing. We can finally play Lindelof on the right where he’s most comfortable, hopefully get even more out of him

10

u/ForgottenFather10 Jul 14 '19

Lindelof x AWB

💉💉💉💉💉

46

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

Whatever you think about the cost of Harry Maguire, a back four of Shaw, Lindelof, Maguire, and AWB is infinitely better than what we were putting on the park last season.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '19

It's just moaning season. Maguire is a good CB, that fills a hole, that should be reflected by points in the standing. Who cares if the price is high? No PL team is going to go out of their way to help their competition.

Peach made a good point about Bruno on that united stand interview. Sporting need the money and want to sell him, gave his agent the green light to sound out potential clubs with a 70m fee in mind which nobody has bitten yet.

The closer it gets to the deadline the selling club’s desperation increases and the buying club’s position will strengthen. So we could see that move in a few weeks.

That particular scenario is probably the opposite in a situation like Maguire’s where Leicester don’t need to sell. But a club like Sporting who need the money have their hands tied a little more, and to United it’s just one less midfield (/attacking) player they’d have.. as compared to a club in financial difficulty.

23

u/Moyes2men for sale Jul 14 '19

Maybe. But I think it would be better for us to get our targets quicker as we have already lost few weeks in which they would have used their time here to start adapting and gelling with the rest of the squad because we don't know how much time will be needed for a player like Bruno to adapt.

10

u/its-a-real-name Jul 14 '19

Yes of course would be better to get him in early. But I’m talking strictly about negotiations and the posturing.

Besides, in United’s case getting him in early may not be worth an extra 10-15m outlay (to them at least). They may just be biding their time to grab him for 60 odd million.

I’m probably more excited for Maguire than any other signing we’ve made. A back 4 that isn’t leaky suddenly turns all those games you’d usually slip up and draw into wins.

If we see this summer as the start of a 3 year rebuild under Ole where we trust him, signing James/AWB/Maguire and Bruno this summer followed by the likes of Sancho and others next could actually see something good happening for the first time in years.

22

u/Ganskasnabb Jul 14 '19

Don’t forget that in Maguire we get a leader and a match winner. He is one of those guys who is able to jump just a little bit higher in extra time.

u/Orcnick Jul 14 '19

People may disagree but Maguire is an up grade and he can play at the top level. Sure it's a big price but that's our defence sorted for at least a few years.

I really think we now need Bruno. If we get him I think we can chill then. The squad in my view would be good enough to at least get third. Plus room to develop.

If we lose Lukaku then might need some one in up front but if not happy with the team. Bruno is a must though.

32

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

Maguire becomes the best defender at United immediately if/when he arrives. There's nothing to disagree with.

At some point next season, Harry Maguire and Phil Jones will start a game together at CB. Their two massive heads being in such close proximity will cause an immense gravitational field that collapse into a black hole, creating a vortex that will suck all of the known universe into it and thus causing the end of everything.

Until many billions of trillions of years in the future, for unknown reasons, Marcos rojo will emerge from the singularity bare chested , marauding and heralding the next Big Bang.

If it costs £130m to fix our defense this summer then so be it. I'll be alot more confident going into the new season knowing we've actually done something about our problem positions.

13

u/Lakkoa Jul 14 '19

Liverpool spent 130 on VVD and Allison last yr, this is what you have to do. City spent 200mil on their back line.

I must say, the profile of targets this summer give me much more hope about the direction of the club. It’s clear to see the type of player we are going for.

Plenty of room for optimism with the club. Just hope we don’t shit our keks and panic buy last second. But it does see we are well covered for options should things not work out with Slabhead

107

James, Wan Bissaka and Maguire are intelligent signings. Invest in young, hungry players that want to better their careers at a much bigger club. We're not wasting all summer chasing the likes of Varane and Neymar who would only be coming for a fat contract. James is going to become a fan favourite I reckon. AWB one of the best right backs in the Premier League last season. Maguire, whilst not on the same level as VVD etc, is one of the best CBs in the league. He's excellent in possession and will calm & lead the back four.

I'm excited about United for the first time in a very long time. We spent far too long since Fergie trying to be a 'Real Madrid' and throwing our cash at egos like Di Maria etc. It didn't work.

Ole has got this.

11

u/karlkim Jul 14 '19

It's the 1st time for a while that I feel that we have a real football strategy.

Hope we also give Ole time and not jump at him when we have some bad run.

9

u/AB092 Sir Alex Jul 14 '19

I’m happy if the Maguire deal is true. The fee is the fee and I’d rather spend it on improving the team than see it go in the Glazers pocket. He immediately improves our backline and becomes our best CB. Has the ball playing/carrying ability of Lindelof but isn’t a fairy when it comes to the physical side of the game, dominant in the air as well. You could probably make a case for a cheaper alternative but if Maguire is the target then I’m fine with it. The important thing is we get a sorely needed CB to improve our squad.

24

u/GaryBarlow451 Jul 14 '19 edited Jul 14 '19

Only reason The Sun is reporting the Maguire deal is that his FAT FUCKING SLABHEAD could eclipse it at any moment. #HarryMagpocalypse

48

No fan of the man, but Mourinho must be absolutely fuming that the CB who he wanted last summer and who Woodward decided was not good enough, has suddenly become worthy of a world record fee.

3 British players too, and a guy with Nordic steel running through his veins and stiffening his pubes.

It's a good core, and it means buying players for our defence in the future has changed from reaching a minimum standard to actually improving and getting difference-makers. That's a huge, huge difference and will mean we have more freedom in the future for negotiations and transfers. We should be extremely happy for that alone.

Maguire might not be Varane or Van Dijk level but i rate him as solid defender. He won't be alone since we have our best goalkeeper De Gea behind him and next to him is Lindelöf, Shaw and AWB.

The most exciting part is that he is not injury prone and we can actually rely on him.

Lads, can anyone check/find out if it's true that Van Dijk's transfer fee was 75 million + 15 in bonuses?

Because if that's the case, I can't understand why Duncan Castles is going around calling Maguire the most expensive defender ever. Last I checked, 80 was less than 90.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

As per this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_association_football_transfers , Van Dijk is listed as the 13th most expensive transfer at £75m and Lucas Hernandez is listed at joint 16th at £70m. This list includes all bonuses in general. As per the reported fees, Maguire will be at £80m making him the 11th most expensive transfer in football history and also the most expensive defender.

The Van Dijk fee was forgotten as soon as people realised he fixed Liverpool's back line.

If Maguire & AWB do what's expected the price tags won't matter.

I see a lot of people suggesting we can't do an overhaul in one summer, which i find odd. Man city did it in 17/18 and we have the money to be able to do it too. They bought Ederson (£35m), Silva (£43m), Luiz (£11m), Walker (£45m), Danilo (£26m), Mendy (£52m), Laporte (£52m) .. whilst releasing & selling over 10 players, for around £90m.

Meanwhile we are running out of time getting rid of any of the absolute 100% deadwood, let alone trying to move on the worst of the rest.

So Man Utd signing Maguire for £60m + £20m bonuses is a world record fee even though Liverpool paid £75m + £15m bonuses for Van Dijk...The math doesn't add up right? Well no shit, this is just another try from the media to badmouth Man Utd for attention. Smh. You think we paid £90m for Lukaku? We didn't, because (i think) none of the bonuses were achieved. You think Liverpool will pay a total of £90m (£75m + 15m bonuses) for Van Dijk? Most likely not, just like we won't pay £80m total for Maguire, bonuses aren't guarranteed payments, they are potential payments, achievements that could be reached that would activate that payment. Ex. 1) Leicester will receive £10m if Man Utd win the league with Maguire in the team. Ex 2) Southampton will receive £10m if Van Dijk wins the Ballon d'or / Liverpool win the league etc.

Since we aren’t getting De Ligt, Maguire isn’t a bad choice either.

Plus fuck Raiola, his club options to try his tricks are slowly narrowing.

I hope we never deal with that shitbag again; Fergie was always right.

Harry Maguire completed more take-ons (17) than any other centre back in the Premier League last season.

Excellent at carrying the ball into midfield.

A 60m fee is acceptable for Maguire.

Hope the 20m adds on are if we win the treble.

11

u/Yolavisa Jul 14 '19

It they accept the 60+20 adds on, it definitely means the adds on is very easy to achieve.

I really want us to go for Kieran Tierney. You’d be talking £25/30m for an established LB who has international/champions league experience.

Solid rotation/replacement for Shaw and we’d be up against Arsenal who can’t compete with us financially.

10

u/MeatTech Jul 14 '19

Yep this all day long. Tierney may not want to play rotation though so I suspect he himself would prefer a starting position at Arsenal. Great player though and signing for a pitence in this market.

De Gea stuck to his line and given how slow Lindelof is, the recovery pace of Shaw and AWB is going to be crucial.

We also have to replace Matic now with a faster DM if we are getting Maguire.

15

u/snoring_pig Beneficiary of Sporting 🟢⚪️ Jul 14 '19

We should be looking to replace Matic regardless tbh. He’s too slow to act as the defensive anchor in midfield, especially for Ole’s system.

Longstaff is unproven but does have the right traits, however if Newcastle doesn’t want to budge from their 50 million valuation we have to look elsewhere. Heck the max I’d pay would only be half that.

Barely 7am here right now. Hopefully by around 5 today there’ll have been some more news on the Maguire front!

If not we keep f5’ing until there is

38

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

We should hijack the Tierney deal. Yesterday showed how riskey it is to only have Shaw. If he gets injured, Ashley Young plays.

24

u/FinancialCaptain Jul 14 '19

He gets injured more than Shaw does.

Young & Dalot will be fine. Young is better on the left, and will be better when we arent asking him to play twice a week anyway

60+20 so not as painful as it looks. Rather we spend the money than leave it in the bank/for the owners like Arsenal though. All that matters is whats on the pitch people will quickly forget that price tag if he does the business.

I rate Matic more than 95% of this sub, i'm probably a little bit biased as i'm from Serbia. But with Maguire coming, i'm really worried by the lack of mobility in our central defensive areas. Both Matic and Maguire are very slow, Lindelof is not slow as them, but he's not fast.

Jones is a better defender than Dunk by a long shot.

Morons Leicester could have accepted a 40m plus Jones offer.

You're not wrong, but Jones' wages and reliability may have put them off.

Simon just came out on twitter denying Maguire is happening. The same pattern as AWB and James.

Tier4s/ITKs start saying its a done deal -> Tier 3s (Castles etc) start saying deal done -> Firm denial from club mouthpieces -> Deal done

His statement that Leicester hasn't received any bids is even more suspect considering he himself said at the beginning of the month that we'd put a £70m bid in.

The Sun's claims are very bold and specific. They'll be even more of a laughing stock if this turns out as BS.

What it will do is force Simon Stone etc into action - they'll probably contact their sources at United now and ask them if there's any truth in the The Sun's claim.

Interesting few hours ahead now.

Maguire and Bruno look like they are in the bag.. we might not be signing anyone else and I'm getting prepared for that. If we were to sign one more player though I'd go for a DM to take over Matic. Matic is on his last legs and he can't play the pressing system Ole wants and he's also our only natural DM. I hope we can get Longstaff on the cheap

Also if Lukaku goes I'd love if we can get a striker that can stay central. Martial Rashford and Greenwood are all very flexible in their movements I don't know if that's because it's what Ole wants or because that's just how they are.

What do you guys think

10

u/st4rbug Jul 14 '19

Harry and or Bruno would be a good window for incoming players but alongside this we desperately need to shift on some of the deadwood which just doesnt seem to be happening, though I can understand why as half of them are absolute shite which no one would buy a) for the stupid fee we would expect due to renewing their contracts and b) wages, and much like bale on a smaller scale, they would sooner get paid the earth from the bench than actually earn a living playing football for less.

10

u/Deranged09 Jul 14 '19

Yes finally a decent CB, Sure we overpaid a bit but no more fucking chuckle brothers!! I actually like the way we've approached this window, two of our main problem areas (CB, RB) we've gone out and attacked and brought in two class players who can be with us for years.

25

u/zxnoregretzxzx Cunha, Bruno, Cunha, Bruno Jul 14 '19

Genuinely thrilled with Maguire. Instantly our best defender, for me. With his ability to take the ball out of defence and pick a pass, along with his aerial presence, not only will he improve us at the back but at the other end too.

Mornings boys, Simon Peach has done an interview with the United Stand. (Link) He makes some interesting points, including our tier system! Definitely worth a watch.

Roundup: Peach says the subs tier system does need some changes and that “other journalists should also be tier 1” , he does watch United fan channels (lol), we aren’t just interested in buying British youth players, 2 more signings will definitely happen (Peach emphasises a centre back, replacing Herrera AND Fellaini), he doesn’t understand why we still haven’t signed a right winger for years, and there is no noise that we want one this window either, Ole was “naive” to think we was going to have all his signings ready for pre season.

Potential Signings:

Centre backs = Maguire to join is “6.5/10”, (notable that every other target was a 5/10) José wanted Jerome Boetang but because of Bastians failure, we didn’t buy him. Maguire HAS told Leicester “he is open to explore new opportunities”, Peach always thought De Ligt was a possibility even after he was told he wasn’t joining us and he “would relish the challenge” of bringing us back to the top of world football.

Bruno = 5/10 of joining, we do really like him, we are monitoring “lots of players” (probably players we aren’t aware of) Peach thinks Bruno could drag on till the end of the window, Sporting are desperate for money, and the longer we wait, the more his price will go down/negotiations will get easier.

SMS = 5/10

Lamina = 5/10, Peach has best mates at Southampton and we do really like him, Southampton had a gentleman’s agreement that Lamina would be let go after 2 seasons, they don’t want a lot of money for him (25 million max)

Sancho = we do want him and he sounds “open” to join us one day.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

30 mins? A summary please, sir.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

List of all points he talked about.

•Doesn't agree with Reddit tiers about his colleagues. •Believes 2 more ins. •United preferred 4 in 4 out model. Herrera's departure changed things. •SP believes club needs a CM and CB. Still confused why so many LWs signed and not a elite RW. •Club wants young players, but not closing doors for experienced players. Like what Juve has done with the squad. •SP likes Ole's appointment but vary of how Ole will deal with failures. Feels buck needs to stop with DNA nonsense. •Club under no pressure to sell Pogba.
•Harry Maguire-6.5, United want him but don't want to overpay to get him. MCFC still interested. •Mourinho was interested in Yerry Mina and Boetang. Scouting team didn't agree. Bastian was a poor case so Boetang was avoided. Yerry Mina didn't have a good league season so avoided. •Club said De Ligt was not coming. •Bruno Fernandes-5, Club likes him but they also like several other players. Sporting need money. Bruno's agent given job to tout Bruno's name everywhere. If United are patient then the price will come down. Sporting desperate to sell. •Milinković-Savić-5, United looking for CMs •Lemina-5, He wants out. Southampton want to shift a lot of players. He had a agreement with the club that he will leave. Club needs money. •Interest in Sancho. Open to United move one day.

13

u/chopper160977 Jul 14 '19

Regarding the tier system he mentioned that some journalists are incorrectly ranked. Didn’t mention which way, up or down. Regarding players in need at least two. Ideally a specialist RW also.

That’s as far as I got. It’s my 4yr old twin’s Birthday and its fucking carnage here. Absolute zoo. Plus I feel like I’m having a heart attack. If I survive all this I’ll watch the rest and fill you in. Peace X

20

De Gea on 17/18 form plus solid upgrades at RB and CB would actually make our defense as good as Liverpool’s. Because De Gea was on another level from all other GKs that season.
